In “Material World”, Simran Raswant and Francisca Alliende Covarrubias explore the ethical implications of the materials used in architecture and the supply chains that produce them. They discuss the invisibility and lack of transparency surrounding global supply chains, which often involve unethical labor practices and forced labor. The hosts highlight the need for architects to challenge preconceptions and expand their scope of action in addressing these issues. They reference the Design For Freedom report, which exposes forced labor in building material supply chains, and discuss the role of architects in avoiding the subsidization of unethical practices. The episode emphasizes the importance of awareness, certifications, and design thinking in promoting ethical practices, as well as the need to revisit and redefine the codes of conduct that guide the architectural profession.

Jarrett Ley, a current student in the Critical, Curatorial and Conceptual Practices Program at Columbia GSAPP, speaks with Indian architect Rahul Mehrotra, founder of RMA Architects, on the occasion of the Kenneth Frampton Endowed Lecture he presented on November 8, 2017.

They discuss Mehrotra’s Magic Bus project, an educational campus which uses ordinary materials found in informal settlements in order to help young students feel more at ease while training away from home. Mehrotra also touches on permanence in architecture and the architect’s role as negotiator and advocate between a project’s different clients.

GSAPP Conversations #41: Rahul Mehrota in Conversation with Jarrett Ley

Jorge Otero-Pailos, director of GSAPP’s Historic Preservation Program, speaks with Sandra Uskokovic and Boris Bakal of Shadow Casters in advance of their Spring 2017 lecture at the school. Shadow Casters is a critically acclaimed international artistic and production platform for interdisciplinary collaboration, creativity, and reflection on inter-media art. 

The duo breaks down their choreographical approach to preservation and discuss how a humanities-focused understanding of the modern city may inform and inspire artistic and political interventions in urban and architectural culture.

Historic Preservation Podcast #3: Shadow Casters on Performance

This Spring, Untapped New York collaborated with Columbia GSAPP to create a mini-series of podcast episodes designed to welcome incoming students to the GSAPP family. 

Throughout the series, we explore architecturally interesting and historic New York City neighborhoods that house Columbia University’s campus and surrounding communities. This is the first of three conversations specifically produced for the School.

Today, Michelle Young and Justin Rivers of Untapped New York discuss the neighborhood of Morningside Heights, which is home to Columbia University’s Morningside Campus and to Columbia GSAPP. Michelle Young is GSAPP faculty, alum ('12 MSUP), and founder of Untapped New York. Throughout this episode, Justin Rivers, Chief Experience Officer at Untapped New York, will discuss five spots including Alma Mater, the Guastavino Dome at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, Riverside Church’s Labyrinth, Ulysses S.
