More than anything, WhoMadeWho are a band channeling a singular energy. From their live performances to their songwriting to their DJ sets and beyond, they’re a restless, constantly evolving entity with a diverse range of critically acclaimed releases on a varied succession of labels like Gomma, Get Physical and Kompakt. 

Quite a few music journalists have tried to label and pigeonhole WhoMadeWho over the years and most have missed the transformative mark. And while the notion that great music always defies categorization is often a hackneyed cliché, in this particular case, it’s actually completely and utterly true. On the face of it, ‘experimental dance band’ might make a fitting description. But walk into one their full-on live assaults, and you’ll quickly realize that having your ears penetrated by the ‘two-headed vocal monster’ that is Tomas and Jeppe with Tomas on drums is a mind-altering experience that’s less about genres and all about vibe. 

And the WhoMadeWho vibe is a powerful, yet elusive beast. Among other things, it’s forming as an experimental side project and suddenly realizing you’re playing sold-out shows in the world’s most respected venues; it’s a heady journey in the rock and roll-meets-electronic music tradition that’s seen them play everywhere from Melt Festival and Sonar to Roskilde and the legendary Robot Heart parties; it’s having your sound remixed by the globe’s discerning dance music mafia with heavyweights like Tale Of Us, Hot Chip and Maceo Plex stepping up and rising to the occasion; it’s running the cultural gamut from pop to techno to indie, hinting at new genres along the way; it’s being an insider-band that all the greats band are fanning out over; and it’s touring non-stop together for 10 years, lighting dance floors on fire in all corners and capitals, while still finding a way to sound preposterously fresh – like they just formed yesterday, all hopped up on new, creative energy. This might have something to do with the fact that Tomas, Jeppe and Tomas actually like each other. Unlike a lot of other bands, the pressures of touring hasn’t killed their enthusiasm. Quite the opposite. In the words of Høffding: “We still really like and respect each other. There’s a lot of energy in the room when we’re together. We basically have great chemistry, and most nights these two lunatics would be my first call party-mates.” That energy is central to WhoMadeWho’s creativity. Moreover, that energy and the interaction with their audience is the potent combination that fuels their legendary live performances, as Kjellberg confirms: “We seriously need the interaction with our audience in our life!”

WhoMadeWho are that rare thing, a band with their own sound. It sounds as if they won’t cool off or settle down anytime soon.

Die Festivalsaison hat begonnen und gemeinsam mit dem Techno-Duo ONE TALES nehmen wir euch mit in die dritte Ausgabe unserer Podcastreihe. Dunkler, treibender, technoider – überzeugt euch selbst. Auch dieses Mal haben die beiden eigene Produktionen in ihr Set eingespielt, die jeweiligen Stellen sind als Kommentare gekennzeichnet.

Story #3 – Nach Elysion kommt Oceanus
Die schlimmsten Befürchtungen wurden wahr – die Illusion der „Insel der Seligen“ war nur eine List der Götter. Wie ein schwerer Nebel hängt die Erinnerung daran in euren Gedanken. Herausgerissen aus dem Elysion treibt ihr nun im Ursprung der Welt. Es zerrt euch in den Oceanus, den Strom, der die Welt umfließt. Oh, wie sehr sehnt ihr euch zurück ins paradiesische Elysion. Völlig eurer Sinne beraubt wandelt ihr nun mehr im Jenseits als im Diesseits. Aus der Ferne vernehmt ihr es langsam – wer oder was ist dort auf dem Vormarsch? Wie ein Sog zieht es euch in Richtung der ohrenbetäubenden Schläge und bringt dabei euren gesamten Körper zum beben.

Was ist das für ein Ort, an dem ihr euren schlimmsten Ängsten ausgesetzt seid und weder leben noch sterben könnt? Ist es Eigenverschulden, oder das Schicksal das die Moiren euch auferlegt haben? Wo führt dieser Strom hin, der vorbei an den mythischen Randvölkern entlang surrealer Gestalten immer weiter ins Innere der Welt fließt? Und wieder diese dumpfen Schläge…

Story #3 – After Elysion comes Oceanus
The worst fears came true – the illusion of the "Island of the Blessed" was just a trick of the gods. The memory of it hangs in your thoughts like a heavy fog. Torn out of the Elysion you are now in the origin of the world. It pulls you into the Oceanus, the stream that flows around the world. Oh, how bad do you want to go back to paradisal Elysion. Completely deprived of your senses, you now walk more in the hereafter than in this world. From far away you hear it slowly – who or what is on the rise there? Like a suction it pulls you in the direction of the deafening beats and makes your whole body shake.

What kind of place is this, where you are exposed to your worst fears and can neither live nor die? Is it personal fault or the fate that the moires have imposed on you? Where does this stream lead, which flows past the mythical marginalized people along surreal shapes further into the interior of the world? And then again, these dull beats…

LoKKoTRONN, born and raised in Spain but living in New York City since the 2000s, he is the co-founder and resident DJ of the acclaimed Erratic emblem, established in 2011. Since its inception, Nico has been constantly refining and expanding his techno palette rendering the genre inextricable from his way of life and sensibility towards the arts and electronic music as a whole. His style when behind the decks can be characterized as a blend between melodic, acid basslines layered with poignant, driving rhythms that penetrate equally the mind as they do the body. His solo techno journeys under LoKKoTRONN have been featured on podcast series such as Lost In Ether and Grounded as well as his co-run Erratic Podcast to name a few –the latter now being over 7 years old and spanning over 175 episodes. Always in search of new sonic textures and enchanting melodies, LoKKoTRONN's mixing and penchant towards the cerebral are rare and timeless.
