Dave The Drummer - July Heatwave - DJ Mix 2013

Cristian has a massive worklist with more than 150 productions and compositions for Sony/BMG, Blanco & Negro (Spain), Intec (UK), Elephanthaus (USA), Pornographic (together with Marco Bailey) and his own brand new labels Donkeyhead Recordings and Black Codes. DAVE The Drummer aka Henry Cullen own his own label Hydraulix Recordings and has made and been involved in producing more tracks over the last 15 years than quite possibly any other techno producer out there.

Cristian Varela: 

Influenced by a special family of artists and his mature musician career to finish (piano- solfa) he composed the soundtracks for some national theatre shows, movies, fashion "pasarelas" and TV spots.

Remixer of talents like Eurrythmics “Sweet Dreams”, Michael Zager´s Band “Let´s All Chant”, Split Second “Flesh”…

His productions and interviews have appeared in the most important specializing magazines, tvs, radios and Internet (MTV, VIVA, Tele5, Antena 3, Telemadrid, Cuatro, TVE1, TVE2, DJ).

With this Cristian´s long artistic life, discography and of course, his spectacular sets with 3/4 decks, along with his constants tours around the world from Japan to U.S.A, Europe, UK…makes him one of the most prestigious names in the electronic international scene.

Since his first studio sessions upstairs in a pub in Deptford with the Liberator DJs, the once professional drummer, D.A.V.E. has made literally hundreds of recordings, including some club classics such as:

• One Night in Hackney on S.U.F. records with Chris Liberator. 
• Hydraulix 09 on his own Hydraulix label.

• Cradle cap, on his Apex imprint. 
• Soul image, on Riot recordings with B.K.

• The Human Animal, on Chris Liebing’s Fine Audio Recordings. 
• Twisted with Wayne G and Stewart Who?, on It's Fabulous! Records.

He has recorded under many different aliases, most commonly as D.A.V.E. The Drummer but also as: Henry Cullen (Mutate To Survive)/Strobe/CO-AX/Secret Hero to name just a few.

HYDRAULIX RECORDS

Dave’s infamous techno label Hydraulix has been running since 1998. For the past 12 years DAVE has been playing his tracks from the vast catalogue of music he has made and released on Hydraulix all over the world.

He has a reputation for being reliable and innovative on the turntables, and now CD players with an armload of unreleased material. He has held down residencies in Brazil and the UK and is a regular visitor to most of South America as well as Japan , Austrailia , Venezuela, Canada , Russia, and Europe.

Dave has now started a digital version of his Hydraulix label

Sunday Lunch Techno Vol.40 - Guest Mix by DAVE The Drummer (UK)

Old Studio Liveset, thought I'd put it up for all you old skool diehards.

Just my CD, it was released as a double pack with Myself and DDR on CD2, in about 1997 I think. You can download this one, I can't put DDR's up, You'll have to ask him if you want it, sorry abut that, but I have to save space.

The set was made in my studio in Brick Lane at the old Truman Brewery, which I always regretted moving out of. I had a lovely big room with huge windows looking over the side alley of the brewery and I ended up living there for a bit after we moved out of our house in Stamford Hill. Great area, I would move there again in a heartbeat. Even if just for the curry.

I did this set with a 66Mhz PC running Cubase Compact under Windows 95. I had one column of midi tracks in a 4 bar loop, my Akai S3200 sampler was loaded with vocals and drums and loops, these were all being played by the Cubase loops, The rest was hardware kit running in pattern mode synchronized to the PC by Midi clock, my Nord Modular was running drum synths and other patterns, The 909 doing the main drums, Two 303's with a bunch of different patterns, one doing basslines the other doing lead acid lines, The Sequential Pro One doing a bunch of random shit that I was just bashing into it and fading into the mix with delay and reverb FX on, and that was it. 

I ran through it once recording to DAT. The first 45 mins are completely live, then something went out of synch so I stopped and reset synch and finished it off. I had to make a little edit to join it back together, I was using Soundscape at the time for HD Audio so that took care of the edit and here's the final result.

These days this kind of thing is a piece of piss to set up on Ableton Live and you can do so much more with midi controllers now too, but 15 years ago it was a different story.

Dave the Drummer - FAB CD - Live Techno Bollocks

January 2013's mix, bit of a mixture of stuff from last year and some new promos and tracks by myself, I had a broken turntable for a bit which explains the long gap between monthly mixes ( excuses! ), I'll try to get another mix done soon, there's loads more tunes to go in just from January alone!

This mix was also played tonight ( Jan 9th ) on the Doppler Shift show on www.fnoob.com, and represents the kind of sound I am really into right now as a DJ and as a producer. Yeah it's a bit slower, yeah it doesn't have much acid in it, yeah yeah yeah whatever, I've heard it all for so long, the complaints and the gripes from a small but very vocal group of people who just love to moan or so it seems, and lets face it this is the internet and wow! people do love to moan on the internet!. But also now I'm hearing the love and the support and for once I'm beginning to feel a bit more confident about my choice to move away from Acid Techno, the gigs are working out again playing to a slightly different crowd, maybe with a few familiar faces in there, and occasionally I'm still banging it, just for balance.

Things are beginning to come back together in the techno music world for me now, darker techno music is emerging from the minimal era with a few bruises but essentially all the more aware from the experience, the beats and BPM's have toughened up a little and the tech house influences have all but gone, also the sound is driving towards the dance floor again, so we are losing the 'swirly ambient head nodding but nothing happening' music style too, which I am happy about.

I hope 2013 is a year of great funky grooves with innovative production, less adherence to formulas, but more attention to getting people on the floor and getting them back in the clubs where they belong.
