A collection of some of the House varieties I've been feeling lately since my move to Portugal. Warm, vibey, melodic, dubbed out summer time flavours.

All these mixes were recorded spontaneously in one take, with no pre-planned tracklist or post-editing (except for a little volume normalization) for the live set feeling.

House

This one is my first new mix in over a year and a half; it's dedicated to what has become my favourite musical space: expansive, melodic, spacious and weighty dubwise/dubtechno music. Starting at around 112 bpm and ending at 160 over the course of almost 2 and a half hours, this is a mix I'd been meaning to put together for some time now and I'm so happy to share it now. As always, listen on some quality speakers or headphones; this sort of music especially benefits from proper low end as you know.

Recorded in Serato on two Technics 1200s, a Rane 72MKII and with live dubbing on a Benidub dub siren and Roland space echo pedal.

04.21 Footnotes in Dub

Finally got around to recording a proper follow up to my fall 2018 mix. This one is in the same vein: lots of vocal jams, melodic beats, rolling percussion, deep low end and lush cozy vibes to keep us warm as we head into the depths of fall and winter. Been a tough couple years for the world; hope this music will make someone out there feel good for at least 90 minutes.

Fall Mix 2021

Get Well Soon [Fall Mix 2021]

Here's something a little different. This mix is a kind of tribute to Mercan Dede's last album 800, released on the 800th birthday of the Sufi poet Rumi. It layers the lush organic instrumentals of that album over a diverse range of deep bass music. For fans of both melodic forward thinking electronic beats and eastern influenced musicianship; this one will definitely benefit from some good speakers. 

From Mercan Dede's biography:
"Mercan Dede believes that when you put digital, electronic sounds together with hand-made, human ones, you can create universal language, capable of uniting old and young, ancient and modern, East and West. This contrast between electronica and classical or folkloric arts cuts to the core of the Sufi philosophy that guides this one-of-a-kind artist. 'Those things are not really separate,' says Dede. 'The essence of Sufism is counterpoint. Everything exists with its opposite. On one side, I am doing electronic music. The other side of that is this really acoustic, traditional music.' "

Mercan Dede 800 Mix

This year's summer instalment comes in at almost 2 and a half hours of thoughtfully curated dub-influenced multigenre electronic music. Traversing a wide range of tempos and genres from 86 up to 160 BPM, these tracks are all held together by a common thread of dubbed out sound design. Spacious and bass heavy energy, lush echoes, reverb and soulful spirits all throughout. Hope you enjoy as always.

Summer Mix 2022

Full Circle

This one is a selection of tunes in and around the border regions of footwork & jungle with elements of halftime, hip hop, IDM and some fresh new psychedelic bassy sounds. From moody, dark and heavy to melodic and cerebral, this mix reflects the range of emotions I usually attempt to move through in my live DJ sets. Featuring original tunes from local BC producers Taal Mala, Atyya, Goopsteppa, Self Evident and 5AM as well as a collection of some of my favourite international purveyors of the 80/170 BPM axis.

Saros Cycle

This is the set I played at Beaver Point Hall on Saltspring Island on January 31st, 2015. I played between 9:20 - 10:30 approximately, right after MATSYA and before MAX ULIS and MICHAEL RED. Big ups to those three for truly awesome sets and especially to MATSYA for putting together such a wonderful night of art, music, food and community. 

For this set I used about half tunes selected by my amazing girlfriend and half my own music so it was a nice sexy mix of deep bass music that incorporated many lighter elements than I usually play, including some chill tasteful trap and lots of soulful ethereal vocals. A bit different than my usual style but appropriate I felt for the time of night.

This is the recording of my sunset set from Living Spheres at Phoenix Farm on Salt Spring Island July 17, 2015. This set was played after Jesse Jule and leading into Ganga Giri's solo didgeridoo set. It starts off in deep driving dubstep and works its way down through the genres to end in ambient soundscapes.

Living Spheres Set

This is my sunrise morning set from Diversity Festival 2015 on Texada Island. Big thanks out to Westerley for the amazing timeslot. I think that was my best festival experience to date and I would love to be back anytime that Diversity happens again. This set spanned a pretty wide range of deep and melodic bass music starting in the darkness of the night and ending with the sun fully up (and people doing handsprings and riding tiny tricycles across the dancefloor). Diversity Festival Sunrise Set

Here's my set from the last show at Beaver Point Hall on Saltspring. Thanks to Luminosity Gathering for having me and keeping the high vibe alive. Out to Atyya, Perkulat0r, Je'Daiaa, Sigma-1, Probiotic Soundsystem, all the visual artists, nourishment providers and especially all the dancers who came out to throw down on that Pisces Supermoon in such a positive and uplifting way. If you were there at that big show on that little farm on that little island then you know. Huge thanks to Earth Candy farm and everyone that made that event truly a night to remember.

This is my set from 11:30 - 1:00 in the cobhouse. The intention behind this set - played on Halloween when the veil between worlds is at its thinnest - was to take the dancefloor on a journey into the shadow and out the other side so, as is a pretty constant theme in my mixes, it starts out dark and heavy and breaks into light to end on a melodic and uplifting note. Contains a lot of my favorite tunes in the drum & bass region with a good mix of classics and fresh new tracks. Thanks to all on the packed dancefloor that joined me for that one. It's about time for a new mix. Sorry about the wait; I promise it will be worth it. I spent a lot of time collecting tunes for this one, with the intention to create a musical journey encompassing all sorts of emotions and atmospherics within the ever diversifying realm of 170bpm bass music. 

In these times there's a need for reflections and feelings of all sorts. Sadness, joy, anger, fear, trust, introspection and release; things like that. I hope this hour of music can convey the ebb and flow of good times and bad; know that on the other side of even the darkest moments there is beauty. Continuing the trend of releasing mixes seasonally, here is my fall installment. Lots of different textures, emotions, energy levels and music from truly internationally influenced artists in this one, representing a diverse selection of the music digging I've been doing this past year. Fall Mix 2017

Another seasonal installation here; this time of the cinematic and spacious autonomic flavor, a la labels like Auxiliary or Cosmic Bridge. I love this genre; had been meaning to put out a mix of it for a minute.

This one just came naturally, recorded in one take on a set of Technics 1200s with no pre-planned tracklist. Turned out perfect for deep listening on headphones or quality speakers. Bundle up and enjoy the journey.

Seasons Change

Winter Mix

Released on Earth Day of 2018 and inspired by the natural beauty and magic of the Pacific Northwest, this mix is a three and a half hour meditative journey with a focus on storytelling and organic layering. Intended for deep listening, relaxation, meditation, sound healing or contemplation, it is best described as a sound collage of many of my favorite artists' most tranquil and spaced out compositions layered with my own field recordings as well as many other recordings I dredged up from the infinite archive of the internet. This mix reflects my own imagination of a life lived along a foggy coastline, meandering between night and day, cities and forests, rain and storms, beaches and caves. Best enjoyed on some quality headphones with eyes closed or in a quiet place with good speakers, chill environment and a comfy chair.

I've included a link to Coast Protectors, an indigenous-led group focused on protecting our coast from the threat of tar sands pipelines and tankers. I've donated to them several times before and if you enjoy this mix and can spare the funds I'd love it if you could give them a donation for the work they are doing.

My closing set at the Cedar Lounge late Sunday night/Monday morning at Shambhala Music Festival in Salmo, BC. Re-recorded from my serato history at home away from the dust; a few mistakes here and there but that's part of the fun. Big thanks to the Grove stage for having me out and everyone that made it to my set at 3am on Sunday night when there was so much other amazing stuff going on. Felt real nice to get to bring the chillest stage at Shambhala from deep dancefloor energy down to straight up ambient just in time for Monday morning. Shambhala 2018

Shambhala 2018 Set

Returning to my theme of seasonal releases, this is a spiritual successor to last year's fall installment. To go with the changing weather this mix is full of melodic and cozy deep vibes; lush R&B, chill trap, deep slow house, organic soundscapes and unclassifiable experiments. Recorded in one take with no edits.

I also have to give special mention to the Nairobi-based DJ/producer collective EA Wave (@eawavesound) whose productions are featured heavily in this mix and who have been just absolutely blowing me away with their music lately. Seriously next level stuff from these folks.

While I strongly dislike the term 'world music' for several reasons (and this mix certainly isn't what you think of when you hear that term, musically speaking) I must say I love the way that, in this internet age, music can disseminate across borders and reach people across the whole world in a language that transcends nations and cultures. This mix features musical artists from Kenya, Canada, Brazil, Switzerland, the UK, Ecuador, Mexico, France, Holland, Croatia, the USA, Tanzania and Ghana.

Fall Mix 2018

This one is the first new mix on my Soundcloud in around 10 months. Truth be told I have been so focused on my weekly radio show - Street Level Beat Radio - that I have been slacking on putting out a SC mix for some time. So, in while it's still summer time, here it is.

With that said, I am extremely happy to present this mix - a style I've been meaning to put out for some time. 120-130 bpm, elements of techno, jungle, breakbeat, minimal and many other genre influences all mashed up into something that I don't really know what to call. I'd say just listen and enjoy; this is perhaps my most ravey mix yet but still with many moments of depth and stillness. Good speakers recommended, as always. Thanks so much for listening.

Summertime

Summer Mix 2019

My opening set from the beautifully mellow Crystal Creek 2019 gathering, near Roberts Creek on the unceded traditional territory of the Shishalh(Sechelt) and Skwxwu7mesh (Squamish) First Nations. This set was the start to a very nice weekend and a great opportunity to play some music aimed more at the ears and heart than the dancefloor; originally played from 8-9pm as the sun set through the trees. This is a home recording from my saved history, with a few extra tunes that didn't make it into the live set but felt right as I recorded it taking up the last 15 minutes. Hope you enjoy and that it brings you the feeling of dancing, listening or simply being in the beautiful forests of the pacific northwest coast.
