Sonic Independent Radio was a pirate radio station whose lifespan was but three short years. It was run very much on a shoestring, situated in a small bungalow and adjacent shed in the then sleepy suburb of Shankill Co. Dublin. The station, first heard in the UK in January 1981, became a regular across Europe at night with a strong signal on 1314 kHz.

Sonic’s story was intended to give an audio snapshot of the radio landscape in late 70's - early 80s Ireland. It also provides an enlightening glimpse into the effort required in the day to day running of a radio station in times before everyone had their own television, internet, mobile phones or even their own home telephones!

I spoke with the stars and writers of the spoken word play "Three men talking about things they kinda know about", Colm Keegan, Stephen James Smith and Kalle Ryan after their sell out shows in the Project arts theatre earlier this year. They are taking their show to the kinsale arts festival on the 13th and 14th of July.
