This is a podcast recording of an online posting for the Goldsmiths History Project on 'The College Beggar' by Professor Tim Crook. It describes the mystery of a street sweeper who appears in repeated engravings, illustrations and photographs of the Goldsmiths' College main building during the late 19th Century and early 20th Century. The same man seems to have been there when the building was the Royal Naval School, New Cross and the Goldsmiths Company's Technical and Recreative Institute.

The image is a photograph of 'The College Beggar' sitting on a box or chair holding a road-sweeper's broom one side of the entrance to Goldsmiths' College between 1910 and 1912. It was included in a photograph album containing postcards of staff, students and scenes of the College at this time.

The poet Dennis B Wilson being interviewed by John Humphrys on the Today programme, BBC Radio 4, 19th November 2013 on the occasion of his being guest of honour for Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh during the Queen's reception for contemporary poetry at Buckingham Palace.

Dennis passed away 28th June 2022 at the age of 101.

Today 19/11/13: The Wilfred Owen of World War II

Edited extracts from the live broadcasting Tim Crook did on the LBC Medium Wave station in London, LBC 1152 AM, on the night of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. When news of the road accident in Paris came into the studio only minutes before the beginning of Tim Crook's overnight programme on 31st August, he had to abandon the five hours of planned and prepared phone-in programming and operate as a live rolling news response operation from midnight until around 6.20 a.m.  The station also stopped broadcasting commercials. At this time all of the broadcasting was self-driven by the presenter from a live to air mixing desk. In 1997 LBC was owned by and situated at ITN in Gray's Inn Road. LBC's sister FM station and the IRN news service was also operating from the same floor in the basement of the ITN/ITV building.   Tim Crook received two awards from the International Radio Festival of New York for best news response to a breaking story and best news casting.  The trade media at the time reported LBC was the first radio station to report the announcement of Diana's death and the first broadcaster to report the government's confirmation of her death.  The second half hour of the sequence contains edited extracts of Tim Crook's broadcasting on the morning of Diana's funeral seven days later.

LBC Programme Controller was Charles Golding. Deputy head of programming was Nikki Townley.
