Lazy initial analysis.  UCLA hoop fans do not expect Wooden-like results.  We do expect to be a perennial Top 10-15 squad, we do expect to be an annual Pac12 title contender, with a serious run at the Final Four every 5-6 years.  Howland was doing fine at UCLA until he got away from what made him successful, and also when he alienated the coaches at the local high school hoop powers, thus rendering himself incapable to recruiting the premeir players in the greater Los Angeles area.  With that said, most UCLA hoop fans would take Howland the X and O's coach in a hearbeat over Alford.

If the rest of the Pac12 got better, then that's an indictment of Alford's recruiting/talent evaluation his first two years.
