The story: Growing up in Colombia, I did a lot of socializing with animals as a kid. What began as curiosity developed into empathy. I went from one instance where I placed a caterpillar on an ant mound to relocating washed up earthworms on pavement. It was a process of evolution. During my teen years, I had developed a care for the weak and empathy for animals but continued to eat steak and ham, etc. By mere accident I was exposed to the reality many pigs face in America where they are submerged fully conscious and head-first into tanks of scalding water. It was at this critical moment I understood the necessity to pick a side and commit to it. 
After dropping animal products, I researched about the topic and was glad to see that Harvard and Cornell studies support my decision. The misconception tying animal products to health and muscle is actually fairly new; brought on by politicians with personal interests in animal agriculture (see ALEC) and continuous pro meat propaganda. In fact, lab studies from archeological sites reveal that the mighty gladiators and the Roman army ate a strictly plant based diet (Big Spartacus fan!). I myself once ran to the gym, worked out, and that same night attended marathon grappling where I kicked ass - all on a regular diet without meat on my plate.

Personas equibocadas, recomiendan comer pollo.
Dicen que tiene proteina y poca grasa,
pero ay mejores fuentes, libres de hormonas,
sin arsenico, cholesterol, y sufrimiento.
Through the growing crack in the delicate shell, 
a newborn’s beak is seen. 
Golden feathers to  groom and preen, 
a tiny little blue-eyed girl, 
one of 50,000 others.
All born without a nest of straw 
and chirping for their mothers.
As days go by, her body swells, 
her legs begin to ache.  
The weight is so unbearable 
that sometimes legs will break.
She watches as others perish 
on the feces covered ground.
Not capable of reaching food,
they starve without a sound.
After 42 short days of life,  
she’s violently yanked by her feet. 
Though still a baby at that age, shes thrown into a cage.
Packed so tightly she cannot move, 
with miles of road ahead. 
Will she survive this brutal trip
or be one of the many dead? 

At her final destination,
when the highway finally ends, 
she hears the terrified screams of family, 
the shrieks of frightened friends.
With a pounding heart she sits and waits,
she has no other choice.
She can’t tell them that her foot is stuck, 
she doesn’t have a voice. 
When this little girl with sad blue eyes 
Is finally ripped away from the crate that has become her hell, her little foot will stay. 
Severed from her body  No one hears her cry in pain

Farm animals endure a hideous journey
that I would not wish upon my worst enemy

Wrongfully confined by monsters, there is no hope of release.

Imagine yourself being placed in their shoes.
What if it were you  receiving abuse and had your body so horrificly bruised?
Each night laying in horror just licking your wounds as the farm crew sleeps in comfortable room.
You wouldnt last a day in their shoes and that's the truth.
I don't care who you are, you wouldnt last a day.
Such vast seas of sorrow they've never seen mercy and they wont see tomorrow.
Frantically searching  For a shred of relief from continual torment and perpetual grief.
I pray that one day this injustice wil cease.
I look in their eyes They puncture my heart and bleed my eyes dry.
These human-like eyes haunt me asking me, why?

Begging for kindness Some semblance of grace, a sweet hopeful gaze On each innocent face.
I offer them water, a stroke on the snout.
They silently question If I’ll let them all out.
Their senses are heightened. Each sound, each new smell since all of their lives they’ve been locked inside hell.
They are promised through tears as the semi departs,
I’ll continue the struggle, changing minds, touching hearts
