Deejay Astral, the artist formerly known as Palace, is making moves to establish his new persona, and his new EP on W&O Street Tracks (out Dec. 7) should more than see to that. In the loosest possible sense, the three tracks that comprise Astral's self-titled three-tracker could be classified as house music. But it's so much more than that. None of the tracks on the EP stick to a rigid format, constantly toying with house music's innumerable tropes. "Phantasy", in particular, takes a deep house melody and distorts it to give it a crunchy analogue feeling not often heard in house music. Add to that the unsettling, tortured vocal refrain that drips with anguish and you've got a piece of house music that won't be forgotten in a hurry. This is one hell of an opening gambit and one we can't wait to see him top.


Premiere: Deejay Astral - Phantasy

Last month, Patrick Topping dropped his collaborative Now EP with house and techno behemoth Green Velvet (released on the latter's Relief imprint) and since then, he's been ripping up raves across the land. On a recent trip to Aberdeen, Topping stopped by Tunnels for the Format club night to record this exclusive live set—clocking in at just over two hours, you'll want to set aside some serious time for this one. Topping covers a lot of ground here; there's colourful house, robotic techno and plenty of funk and deep, deep grooves thrown in for good measure. Sadly, there's no tracklist, so to all the track ID wizards, hop in the comment section and see what you can spot.

President T shared with us in a recent interview that he'd be dropping a few loosies in the run-up to Stranger Returns—but who knew they'd form a completely new side-project? Titled Greatest To Ever Touch Down, the mixtape lands before the album on Dec. 18 with production from the likes of Spooky, Jme and The HeavyTrackerz and guest verses from Meridian Dan, Bonkaz, and Jme too. Premiering on Complex today is "Gunshot Sound", a track from the tape in which Sean D's shuddering bass and jittery synths hold up Prez T's trademark choppy flow, and badman-friendly lyrics. 2016 looks set to a big year for Sir. Kill Off Killy, so it's best that you get yourself acquainted from now.

This year, MTA Records will be releasing four seasonal EPs, each with a collection of original tracks from new and rising producers. For the spring edition (out Mar. 18), they've collected brand new beats from Felon, Khésis, Kasbo, Volatile Cycle, Mitekiss and Vacant, the latter's being our personal favourite. Vacant's "Eternal" features deep, undulating bass tones swelling and subsiding beneath echoing vocal samples and a techy arpeggio that sweep in and out of the mix, all of which is guided along by a skittish—but by no means imposing—percussion line. You couldn't really ascribe one particular genre to this one; elements of ambient electronica, drum & bass, footwork and more can be heard in the mix and yet, as you'll hear below, there's more to it than that.

Head of the Gqom Oh! label, Nan Kolè has been undertaking a massive project over the past few months. Allying with Rome-based radio station Crudo Volta, Kolè has been travelling around South Africa, and Durban in particular, to investigate the various shades of Gqom that are gradually emerging. For many of these artists, the resultant Woza mixtape and the accompanying documentary are their first chance at exposure outside of the country. It's also an opportunity to contextualise Gqom and educate the rest of the world about the culture as a whole. Crafting a balance of the biggest hitters in the scene, the biggest tracks and those most representative of the sound and its scene must have been a difficult tightrope to walk. One of our favourites—and it really was tough to pick just one—was "Cruel Drumz", a dubby example of the gritty, minimal, bass-heavy sound of Gqom by Cruel Boyz (whose "Touch It" we premiered last year).

Somewhere in the midst of his Frequently Flying tour, Defected house and techno don Sonny Fodera has reworked Section Boyz' signature banger "Lock Arff" into a 4x4 powerhouse. We all know how well this hood staple goes down in a club, but it was never quite suited to a straight-up house set. "I was in a cab in London when I heard it come on the radio and decided to edit it," says Sonny. "I dropped the track at Studio 338 in London that weekend and the club went crazy." It's pretty cool to see UK rap starting to penetrate house music culture in the same way U.S. hip-hop did in the late '80s and early '90s. With any luck, we'll see more of this in the future as the genre gets a more permanent foothold in the world of music.
