Coffee & Geography 3x04 Amitha, Amruta & Charlotte from the UK Schools Sustainability Network

Programme Note:

Under the Dome of Heaven sets three poems that all depict nature in contrasting ways. In this work, I wanted to place the soprano at the forefront of the musical drama, as previous cycles of mine had always built upon my affinity towards the piano. These three short movements, have a traditional title (i.e. nocturne, gigue and postlude) that indicates their general mood as well as a more descriptive title that draws from the text being text.

Across the cycle the singer explores various moods and atmospheres, the first being contemplative and thoughtful, evoking the evening night sky from a text by Sera Teasdale. The second is rhythmic and full of vitality, taking inspiration from the baroque dance form. The third and final movement, is a choral and returns to the thoughtfulness of the opening movement. However this time, with a hint of nostalgia and melancholy which is explored in the poem by Christina Rossetti.

This piece was commissioned by Huw Watkins and Ruby Hughes through the generous support of the Vaughan Williams Foundation.

Inspired by the woodland tarot cards, in particular 'The Blasted Oak' card, this piece was written on the NYOGB summer residency and performed by an incredible NYO alumni ensemble of strings and percussion in Snape Maltings, Birmingham Symphony Hall, and The Tate Britain in August 2015.

Expect molto creakiness and foreboding energy in the first section, evoking an image of an oak tree being struck down by lightning in the middle of the shaded wood. Snapping, rustling, and crunching sounds are all there to depict the enormous branches breaking and falling to the forest floor.
   The second section of the piece is much more reflective, it focuses on the woodland as a whole. The effect of the previous dramatic occurrence leaves the forest in a heart-wrenching state of recuperation. Sumptuous strings can be found here.

Thank you so much to the outstanding musicians who learned and performed this, to Jonathan Stockhammer for conducting it like a wizard, to Anna Meredith and Larry Goves for giving us the NYO experience of a lifetime, and to the other NYO composers for being fkin lame but also the coolest/most talented group of urchins with whom I've ever had the privilege of spending so much time, all the love.

This short work was commissioned for a special performance of Mozart’s Requiem on the anniversary of his death during the 250th anniversary year of his birth.  It is designed to precede the Dies Irae, and was premiered in an unusual concert in Canterbury Cathedral.  The performance included less familiar recreations of Mozart's unfinished Requiem, interspersed by reflections and prequels to complement the various sections of the requiem mass.  It is heard here in context with Mozart's Dies Irae.

These short pieces (musical glimpses) tell what photographs cannot. They are musical reminders of things I have seen and emotions I felt at the time of taking photographs of specific places and things. For instance, it is impossible to describe the grace one sees in an image of an apsara on the temples of Angkor. Similarly, it is impossible to fully explain the smiles of the many faces on the Bayon temple in early morning, or the mystery of the few trees that seem to float on the lake surrounding Neak Paen.
