I must admit this is a pretty old track - 5 years old to be precise!

A lot has changed in the last 5 years with regards to music production, but I thought it would be nice to share this with you as it forms a part of my learning musical history.

At the time the acapella for this track is easilyavailable via Youtube, but not any more - I'm glad I 'got in' while I could!

It starts, with an epiphany... A realization of power, ability. Practice, with great power comes great responsibility, better not mess this up... Looking down from the rooftops at the streets below, filled with potential danger, someone has a job to do... And with great power, comes great adversary...

Step by step, pushing to the limits, becoming a god. But out of nowhere, another would stand in the way.

Rise Vigilante, over come defeat. Stand as a wall between the good, and the evil. Rise, vigilante...

With great power, comes greater enemies. Rise to them. Face them. Defeat them.

The year was 1789 when we headed out to Sea
Transportation 7 years 
For some, life sentencing 
Herded as if Cattle
In the Hull we would reside
Wondering, what would come
Seemed fate would now decide
In the Hull the stench was foul
Unbearable, extreme
A poor man's life
There were no dreams
Only suffering ...
Moaning, groaning, characters
Faces looked grotesque
Adding to the trauma
A Tenor who'd never rest
With continual wail
As we sailed ...
To where? 
We weren't quite sure
The Tenor's torture escalated
"MURDER HIM" all roared
Whispering and huddling
Soon the Convicts made their plans
Who would do the dirty deed?
Silencing the mad man's screech
The Operatic Convict
Soon would Sing his final Song
So they thought ...
But they were wrong
Though dead the song prolonged
Panic stricken with a storm
And Operatic haunt
Escaping Devil's life ahead
Men overboard all gone
The Tenor's Song would linger
Apparition had it all
But Cannon's blast
That sank the Ship
Only left a gurgling call

The track title as well as the picture are a nod to one of the games in the popular Assassin's Creed video-game franchise, which is set in a medieval Italian backdrop and features a protagonist named Ezio who ... you guessed it ... is an assassin. I've never actually played the games and this song was in no way inspired by them, but after I composed it I settled on this name because for me the song conjures up images of medieval intrigue/drama, so it seemed fitting.

Instrument Discussion

PERCUSSION: tom, hand drum. snare, dayre

I'm continuing a trend I started recently of including 4 different drums in a track. I have a dayre (similar to tambourine) on the far right and a snare drum on the far left to widen the soundstage. Meanwhile a medieval hand drum features toward center, accented by the occasional bassy boom of a tom drum.

WIND: clarinet

The wind instrument that kicks in after the quieter vocal section in the middle of the track (and subsequently features in the outro) is a turkish clarinet.

BOWED: hurdy gurdy (rhythm + drone), tromba marina

The instrument you hear producing the drone and rhythmic buzzing is a hurdy gurdy, which is a popular medieval stringed instrument. The hurdy gurdy is an instrument that can also be played melodically, like a violin, though that feature is something I don't use in this particular track. Needless to say, it's a very versatile instrument :)

The instrument producing a harsh staccato-like sound toward the far right of the soundstage in the latter half of the song is a tromba marina, a positively quintessential medieval instrument that I absolutely love.

PLUCKED: gittern, baroque guitar

The gittern is a type of medieval lute. It is the "guitar-like" plucked instrument that can be heard toward the left side of the soundstage. The baroque guitar meanwhile plays a more supporting role and is panned to the right side of the soundstage.

VOCALS: lead female vocalist (soprano), lead male vocalist (counter-tenor), male vocal shouts

As per usual the vocals were recorded using true legato sampled VSTs, meaning that these melodic lines were composed and recorded by hand and that no pre-recorded phrases were used.
