I've never been much of a talker
There ain't much need to be, it seems
And every time I try to empty out the locker of my thoughts, they end up falling out on me.

Too many pieces crammed together
And not a single match to see
I'm not a painter or a poet – I can't show it as it ought to come together when I speak.

I think we're better off with me who think more cleanly on their feet.
Maybe my medium's a crutch we'd best be hopping off

To bottle our words till they're spoken in verse
Drop jaw at the joy of those who skip when they walk
And covet the cool of people who rhyme when they talk.

My girl's got lyrics in her laugh,
And everything she means inside's a metaphor.
Why can't I seem to sing 'em back,
Searching long in vain inside for better words?

She skips in rain without an umbrella
And paints in colors few and sweet.
And yet she waited for me to tell her 
For me to tell her what she's known I'll find I mean.

His love is undeserved there's no good that you or I or anyone could do

Using the words of Jesus Christ and William Blake, a different take on one of the Beatitudes.  This was the first performance of the piece.

I'm amazed by all that I don't know

Perspective

So this started out as a cutesy hometown living type thingy, and it ended up being a song about a man who has a co-dependant relationship with his backyard fence. Don't ask me why. 

There's a fence just outside my backdoor 
It's cracked and it's warped and the paint is all gone 
But i know it sees all that's in store
It watched my kids grow up
And it heard every game, every score
And more

They say you can't argue with fenceposts 
But we've had it out time and again 
Every morning i lean on him 
Wondering how long he can stand 
He keeps everyone safe 
And he's there when you need him
And this is the first thing I'll say
To the fence in my backyard 
I'm hoping that you choose to stay 

Well i met him when i was a kid
He had brilliant white paint that would hurt when you looked 
When the sun hit it right, but i did 
He caught most of my baseballs
And he let me climb up when he missed
Sun kissed

But we've had it out time and again 
Every morning i lean on him 
Wondering how long he can stand 
He keeps everyone safe 
And he's there when you need him
And this is the first thing I'll say

Well i moved out of that house today 
I was scared and depressed and i wanted to hurl 
But i knew what i still had to say 
I picked up the last box 
I was heartbroken, wanting to stay 
That day

He kept everyone safe

It's been 36 hours since then
I've been sweating and pacing at 3 in the morning
And i couldn't take it again
I drove to my old house and 
Picked up my old and dear friend
He's on the mend

Knowing how long he can stand 
He keeps only me safe 
And he's there when i need him
And this is the first thing he'd say
