This charitable utopia, from tide to shining tide,
A veritable cornucopia—land of the pilgrims’ pride.
Max Augustine lies dreaming in the early hours of dawn,
Soon to take up the briefcase, thence to get his mojo on.
Yeah, business is a gamble and adrenaline sublime;
Transactions shape and save the world, and stakes are high this time.
Twenty minutes still, ‘til the alarm clock makes its bid,
And Maxwell’s dreaming superheroes… superego… id.

Pax Prospero has assets, and he puts them to good use;
He’s funding the construction of a wonderful machine:
American in ethic, efficacious, not abstruse—
A twenty-story man of steel like the world has never seen.

Monument he is named—a new defender,
Progress pledged in the allegiance of his alloys.
A cybernetic link—an artificial intelligence
That shapes itself after the noblest of minds—
Shapes itself after Pax’s very mind.

The research was conclusive and the ethicists concurred
That Prospero and Monument would make a perfect team.
A neurosurgical procedure—now we rest doubly assured
Because a titan kindred-spirit shares in Pax’s conscious stream.

Now Pax was never one to get his spandex in a knot,
But suddenly he pales in dread astonishment to find
That in all the calculations there was one thing they forgot:
Now Monument has tapped the darkest reaches of the mind.

Everything fell apart in that instant,
Monument running out of control.
Prospero knows he alone can stop the madness—
An emerald streak following the trail of wreckage,
An emerald streak making for the coast.

“As I shot towards him, he turned—some two hundred feet high, all glistening in the sun… And as he did, I knew he’d been expecting me, that he was predicting my every move. He had no face, but I caught my own reflection in the shining metal dome that was his head… And the next thing I saw was his fist… I made a crater when I hit the ground. Crawling out, the last thing I remember was his back, as he waded out to sea. Then it all went black… He’s still out there, somewhere…”

The clock goes off, and Maxwell rolls around and rubs his eyes.
A short drive to the airport, then the blue, inviting skies.
