Confined Space stems from the idea of repurposing audio material from YouTube, in an artistic process that values quantity over quality. Random videos are selected using different key words and their audio is chopped and compressed into the DAW to be used as compositional elements. Often scrolling down to get the uploads with the least views, this process is both a reflection on the enormous quantity of material that can be found online and an invitation to use and repurpose digital content in new artistic ways. What is inside the database is not important, its size already makes for an infinite output of ideas.

Luca Favaro is an Italian musician and composer. Starting as a classical percussionist, he approaches electronic music composition finding his roots in sound design, club music and field recording. With the moniker T.U. he has published with False Industries (Berlin), Hide Productions (Milan, Udine) and World Canvas (Helsinki) as well as scoring music for installations, theatre and ballet. He currently hosts Desktop Music, a monthly show on radio Raheem where he explores sound design and generative music through original compositions. With the dance-focused project Capiuz, Favaro investigates a more rhythmic approach to his compositions, exploring the more experimental and hypnotic sides of dance music. As a programmer, he has created various Max for Live devices published by Hide Productions in an ongoing series.

Cicada is a time manipulation effect that warps and smears audio in real time. The device is divided into two independent sections: SCRMBL creates a cloud like texture by running the incoming sound through a cascade of modulating delays, with the possibility of adding extra pitch shifted layers. WARP imitates the warp feature on Ableton’s clips, with a grain/speed control and the possibility of having it synced and retriggered according to live’s tempo.

In 2022 during the great plaque, work began compiling ‘Weld’ a 17 track chef-d'œuvre featuring 16 brand new MC and collaborators, a worldwide vocalist arsenal celebrating Kinlaw’s scope as a producer and a bedrock for multilingual messaging.

“Global noise-rap punktronics from a global guest cast of MCs and vocalists from Bristol to Togo, Uganda to Palestine - steeped in the mystery and folklore of a small town in Dorset, England. Weld is the defining statement of the Kinlaw universe“

Weld was assembled with 30 dubs, chats at the pub and a few emails. Some artist like Operation Egodeath, Robin Stewart (of Giant Swan infame), Dali de Saint Paul, Kelan, D Ham are confirmed members of the shadowy Avon Terror Corps shadowy, Ceramics alumni or Bristol underground friends like Birthmark or Danny Nedelko (of Heavy Lungs / IDLES infamy). At its core Weld is a celebration of this strong local scene - in Kinlaw’s world, local is global - through internet or psychic projection, we are all one. The link-up with Jordan’s premiere avant garde outlet Drowned By Locals is an important expression of this no-borders attitude - with them providing a jumping point to a wealth of vocal talent from the Middle East and beyond. 

Opening with Abdel Ja7eem Hafeth wrenching cover of Johnny Thunders -Society Makes me sad, sung in arabic. After the dust settles, things begin as they intend to go on with the belter Zazuka featuring Ugandan MC, Activist and Nyege Nyege hero Ecko Bazz. Effected Signaller features Togolese No Corner / Rwdfwd vocalist Yao Bobby. In the second part of WELD, Tunisian Toxic Club soldiers Flow Tha Key and Dryveins bring their respective mellow and doom performances in Kinchasa and Too Many Signals; followed later by Palestinian MC MrF13’s Strategically Demorphed, staving off total collapse in an isolated vault which is falling apart; a Sisyphean journey to madness. In ملوك الشغب , Kafr El Dauwar singer, composer and songwriter Ibrahim X brings the mixtape’s energy to an unexpected turn with his famous full blown Egyptian wedding aesthetics, only to be grounded towards the end by Elvin Brandhi’s Speech Plasticity.

Accompanying the album are a collection of cards, the origins, motive & gameplay is still unknown. Story has it they were originally discovered in the flooded basement of Castlemeadesque, Barclays House in Poole, Dorset. Described by one google user as “Mirroring Corfe Castle in Modern Brutalist style.” and also home to peregrine falcons.  The offices were abandoned two years ago, and the cards, in 3 sets of five, were recovered by one of the bank employees. Masterley restored for Weld by Winchester Picture Corps.

Kindohm returns to Conditional with Meme Booth, a startlingly focussed collection of ideas notated in characteristic fizzy synthesis and off-kilter rhythms. Persuasively addictive dance music.

Innumerable sine waves grapple for attention atop restless kick drums right from the off, with opener 'Articulator' setting out a blueprint for the movements to come. Elsewhere, the title track cycles through endless permutations of itself, looking for the perfect configuration and finding it over and over again.

The loping mechanics of 'Friend Suggestion' give way to the optimistic mutations of 'Flexbox', its lone synth swerving through myriad timbres. Moments of respite tumble into view, with the modulated waves of 'Unfollowed Silence' allowing a breath-catch before the dismantled recapitulation of 'It Me.gif' turns up to break itself into unhealthy shapes.

Meme Booth exhibits a fresh approach to synthesis and rhythm, resting both on and off the grid as if wrestling with time itself - only to dive off of the top rope and land squarely in the centre of the dancefloor.

Rian Treanor’s “Obstacle Scattering EP” arrives in a flurry of disorienting rhythmic bursts and de-purposed rave hallmarks. The four-track EP follows the Yorkshire producer’s acclaimed “File Under UK Metaplasm”, an album that welded elements from the UK’s sprawling dance music history with genre-breaking sounds from further afield. Here, Rian goes straight for the jugular with four tracks assembled specifically for the dancefloor.

Playing with “the idea of sound being an obstacle that you have to get your body around,” each track on the EP presents a suite of complications for adventurous ravers. ‘Obstacle 1’ folds the influence of SND into a hi-nrg singeli framework, simmering lush FM synths in a broth of tangled kicks; ‘Obstacle 2’ was written for Rian’s set at 2019’s Aphex Twin-curated Warehouse Project and distills his early obsession with Planet Mu in hyperactive squelches that deftly flit between brutalist glitches and ear-pummeling bass. Meanwhile irradiant chords continuously refract a bouncing 4×4 groove on ‘Obstacle 3’, subtly shifting the focus as they alternate and interlock. Closer ‘Obstacle 4’ switches things up once again, deploying the idea of pause and effect with staccato stabs that follow whirls of modulated synth.

These four obstacles are DJ tools with spikes – selected grooves that don’t fit anywhere except together, mapping out Rian’s constantly-shifting relationship with both the club and the legacy of boundary-pushing dance music. They feverishly demonstrate the outer limits of a streamlined sonic palette, devastating speakers and dancefloors in equal measure.
