Asa Nakagawa is a Seattle-based ambient/experimental/electronic musician that is interested in engaging with sound to commune with the rest of the natural world, and as an extension of spiritual practice.

Some words from Asa about the mix below: 

"A few months ago I received heart-shattering news that an old friend had taken her own life. I went back and forth from Portland a couple of times to see loved ones and attend her memorial, and will continue to carry out ceremonies to honor her. I have had many inexplicable experiences since then and feel like she has been sending pretty clear messages to me. The first being that I found out about her passing on Indigenous People’s Day, about a month after it actually happened.

The following week our mutual friend Chloe had already been planning on returning to Portland to play a show, and I decided to drive down on a whim. We needed to be together to process this. We visited Mount Tabor, the park and extinct volcano where our friend walked everyday prior to her death. The atmospheric river was coming through and it was storming badly but it cleared up the moment we arrived. Because the weather had been so harsh it was just us and the wildlife there for a little while. We saw two eagles in the distance; one flew off and the other flew right over to us, circling for awhile, then floated right above our heads for several minutes.

In this mix you will hear excerpts from ‘Untitling’, which Chloe wrote partially in response to this experience, and a recounting of what we saw on Mount Tabor. Our conversations kept returning to the notion of sovereignty, how its absence affected our friend’s life, how badly we wanted it for her. We yearned for her safety and peace. In ‘Untitling’, Chloe also emphasizes the importance of right relations, moving beyond survival, how appropriate collaboration offers a path toward repair, and the role acoustic ecology plays in all of this.

This is an imperfect mix, but contains recordings from friends and artists that are also concerned with ecological wellness and tracks that have really carried me through the first half of the roaring 2020s."

I am thrilled to share my recording from Passages last November .  It was very satisfying having the opportunity to set the tone for the incredible live performances that followed from Soon Come and Bentley Anderson. An immense pleasure to experience sounds that I love on the Klipshorn system, I had a lot of fun layering various textures and frequencies in this set.
