Continuing to prove their industry-leading scouting abilities, Korean drum and bass label Confucian Sound have enlisted in brand-new signee Vosko for their next release, the gritty two-tracker “Mononofu”.

Having cemented his reputation with a string of releases on acclaimed labels including Drumsound & Bassline Smith’s Technique Recordings, Canada’s DoYu Digital, American imprint Abducted LTD and the Czech Republic’s Empire Recordings, the Italian DJ/producer has already exhibited a decidedly international outlook since emerging on the scene a few years ago.

“Mononofu” serves as the third release this year from the Rome-based innovator, leaning into his signature style of jagged, yet minimal techstep creations. The release’s title track opens with syncopated breakbeats and mechanical whirs, building up to crunchy crescendos anchored on distorted basslines, shuffling percussion and echoing vocal cuts. Its counterpart, “You Hear Me”, is comparatively atmospheric, and finds tense, swelling noise colliding with muted synth plucks before launching into quaking drops punctuated by oscillating sub-bass.

“Mononofu” lands 26 November exclusively via Beatport and Spotify before hitting a full range of digital service providers a fortnight later on 2021.

The South Korean based, cleverly named and innovative sound seeking label Confucian is back with an outstanding release by Moss bringing you heavy-duty sonics for a truly deep, dark and gully floor and head rocking experience!

Balancing vibes and viciousness perfectly, “Reverse” impresses with a suspensive intro driven by an underwater feel paving the way for high-octane rattling drum work which brings back memories of Samurai Music, Rupture, Loxy and Photek. Percussive elements and playful sub-lows met funkified beat-switches and grizzly sounds been thrown in for a measure throughout the pitch-black ride offering the best of futuristic Jungle and up-to-date techy Drum and Bass.

Injecting a crisp approach to the realms of breakbeat and bassline is exactly what’s been done on “Tone”. The accomplished female producer creates a venomous tune tinged by industrial clonks and cinematics FXS which are fanned out and overlayed by powerful sharp-edged drums. If you think things can’t get nastier, then wait for the jaw-dropping beast of a bass alongside guttural sub-tones to drop. Spaced-out, dubby pads and synth patches take care of a releasing, epic heads-down and close-your-eyes-to second break leading to another drop of Neurofunk which deserves the name Funk in its genre designation.

Moss’ prior experience is not to be left unnoticed, using her signature production skills successfully in movies and K-drama soundtracks. As a bassist in the now retired famous South Korean rock band Schizo she’s a well- known musician in Asia too. Not shy of bringing her DJ knowledge to the big stage, Moss moved the crowd at Incheon Asian Game Opening. Moss is without a doubt one of Drum and Bass’ most underrated and unique artists.

In our local area we had a small but strong DNB/Jungle scene so a quick shout out to the LucidityDNB crew back at home. For the bigger parties - London and Bristol was the place to be for our nights out.

J-Path returns to CONFUCIAN with his latest release on the label.

Over the past three years, J-Path has continued to refine his raw and rhythmic brand of minimal drum and bass. As evidenced by his most recent offering, his musical approach is a perfect match for CONFUCIAN, the Seoul-based label at the forefront of the burgeoning drum and bass scene in South Korea.

Break The Spiral opens the release in dramatic fashion. Ethereal soundscapes and emotive trance-like arpeggios set the tone as the top percussive layer is slowly filtered in above a heavily syncopated kick rhythm, building anticipation over the course of the introduction. A metallic break sample switches into a pulsating drop loaded with techy bass stabs and sharp drums which gradually evolves as percussive elements and warped basses are introduced and stripped away throughout the track.

In contrast, What Does It Take adopts a pensive and soulful mood whilst still retaining the forceful minimal energy of the prior track. A dreamlike sequence of musical elements immediately captures the listener’s attention as meticulously layered contrapuntal arpeggios and melodies weave in and out above Bukem- esque 808s and serene vocal pads. The reverb-drenched soundscape lingers after a seamless transition into the drop, where a liquid reese bass accompanies crips percussion as various melodic bass stabs and wobbles enrich the sonic texture at various points.

With these two tracks, J-Path presents two heavyweight tunes full of minimal flavours and flies the flag high for South Korean drum and bass.

J-Path and WX team up once more for the latest CONFUCIAN release.

The Seoul-based label is at the forefront of the South Korean drum and bass scene, and is rapidly acquiring an international reputation for signing quality tunes from the deeper end of the genre.

Both artists have released extensively on the label (WX - AKA Wet Xeomi - has also released under the Xeomi alias and recently signed music to ProgRAM), and have managed to refine a distinctive minimal sound over time. Their latest release, inspired by images of abandoned ruins lost to the desert sands, is testament to this.

Dust Digger opens with a vast and expansive soundscape; glimmering arpeggios, arid pads, and an encroaching dissonance which dissipates before a skippy kick and warped, distorted bassline drive the track forwards. Elements from the introduction are periodically reintroduced, resulting in an ethereal-yet-groovy minimal stepper.

Conversely, Descendants of Filth is driven by off-kilter syncopated snares and kicks. Neuro-drived bass sound design fuse with complex synthetic drum patterns to produce a futuristic piece of hybrid jungle. Layers of pads, counter-melodies, and a continual evolving soundscape ensures that the track captures the feeling of an adventure into ancient and unknown lands. 

The two artists convincingly piece together an artistic project and repurpose their source material through the medium of drum and bass music.

The Seoul-based label is at the forefront of the South Korean drum and bass scene, and is rapidly acquiring an international reputation for signing quality tunes from the deeper end of the genre.

Both artists have released extensively on the label (WX - AKA Wet Xeomi - has also released under the Xeomi alias and recently signed music to ProgRAM), and have managed to refine a distinctive minimal sound over time. Their latest release, inspired by images of abandoned ruins lost to the desert sands, is testament to this.

Dust Digger opens with a vast and expansive soundscape; glimmering arpeggios, arid pads, and an encroaching dissonance which dissipates before a skippy kick and warped, distorted bassline drive the track forwards. Elements from the introduction are periodically reintroduced, resulting in an ethereal-yet-groovy minimal stepper.

Conversely, Descendants of Filth is driven by off-kilter syncopated snares and kicks. Neuro-drived bass sound design fuse with complex synthetic drum patterns to produce a futuristic piece of hybrid jungle. Layers of pads, counter-melodies, and a continual evolving soundscape ensures that the track captures the feeling of an adventure into ancient and unknown lands.

The two artists convincingly piece together an artistic project and repurpose their source material through the medium of drum and bass music.

One thing that can’t be disputed about J-Path’s production is his ability to lay out a story amongst every composition he pulls together. His forthcoming EP through Confucian Sound is the perfect example of this, displaying the elements which have enabled his name to become more prominent in recent years, as well as the incredible standard of engineering which he boasts from track to track. With an intricacy that is difficult for many other newcomer artists to explore, as well as a weight that penetrates club speaker stacks, J-Path proves himself against his counterparts. Alongside Confucian Sound, a label which has committed itself to going against the tide of commercialism and concentrate on the artists who’ve made their place within the underground scene, he’s again proving to be an unstoppable force. So, prepare yourself to be once more to be introduced to the soundscape of J-Path through his ‘Air Castle’ EP.

J-Path joins names like Xeomi, Jevy and Ovzerver on Confucian, highlighting that the imprint is drawing for an army of hotly tipped newcomers for their roster. ‘Air Castle’, with its skipping beats and grooving bass rhythms is an example of just how eclectic this roster really is. Melodies seep in throughout, in between each hook, as it takes its listener along for the ride. Xeomi then joins J-Path on ‘Thrasher’, with the two bringing together each of their meticulous structuring for a track which doesn’t lack bite. ‘Go-N-Modulate’ streams through next, with waif-like vocals moulded to fit its ethereal atmospherics, before you’re taken step by step up into its first breakdown, something which slams into play with ticking drums. Then finally comes ‘Random Ritual’, moving through with the same expert precision as the rest of the EP on top of slow arpeggio and ghost-like sampling.

Together and individually, each track defines the production might of J-Path, as well as the artists which Confucian have asked to join their army. It also signals the strength of J-Path’s musicality and nods at what’s to come from the producer over the next year.

Making his debut appearance on Korea’s Confucian Sound, Dutch drum and bass stalwart Intervore returns with the forward-thinking two- tracker, “Sulphur” / “F7200”.

Since emerging on the scene in 2018, the relative newcomer has gained increasing renown as a fine craftsman of atmospheric soundscapes, releasing the winding, arpeggiated roller “Frameshift” and the burgeoning banger “Singularity” via Conflate Audio last year as his first full release. Picking up where these songs left off, the young talent offers up two slices of ambient techstep on his new release.

An amalgamation of tranquil drones, luscious pads and lo-fi percussion kicks off “Sulphur”, which goes on to deftly weave in and out of gravelly, mechanical drops. Accented by formant growls and choppy snares, the track showcases the rising producer’s ability to juggle dynamic range with masterful precision, perfectly fitting in with the Confucian Sound roster.

Commencing with a tense, immersive arrangement of reverberating bells, menacing buzzing and frenzied cymbals, “F7200” erupts into clanking crescendos marked by barbed basslines and supercharged drums, making for an altogether more riotous affair than its predecessor. Showcasing a darker and heavier side to Intervore’s production ability, the track serves as a promising indicator of what’s to come from the emergent Dutchman, once again proving Confucian Sound’s impressive radar for scouting the next generation of drum and bass talent.

Following on from last year’s pulverising Quinquewave compilation cut “Midnight Lamp”, South Korean drum and bass production duo Hollyland have returned to local label Confucian with their first full release, the intricate two-tracker “GURUGURU” / “Love and Bass”.

Garnering international acclaim with a string of appearances on British label Close 2 Death, Austria’s Neurofunk, What Else? and Germany’s Raving Panda Records among other imprints, the pair – formed of Kiwon and Taehyung – have increasingly fleshed out their signature sound, contrasting lush, cinematic builds with crunchy, bitcrushed basslines to create jaw-dropping results.

The new release’s breezy opener, “GURUGURU” builds upon this theme, commencing with silky keyboards and dreamy flourishes of brass before snapping into jagged, club-ready drops accented by mechanical growls, resonant subs and popping snares. “Love and Bass”, on the other hand, is a comparatively minimal techstep number. Favouring a pared-back arrangement centred around shimmering synth work, persistent ride cymbals and swelling basslines, the track serves as a somewhat serene counterpart to its predecessor, with an underlying edge to it nonetheless.

Having now found their footing in various styles of D&B including rattling, relentless neuro and painstakingly detailed, boundary-pushing techstep, Hollyland are increasingly becoming one of East Asia’s most exciting new drum and bass acts. “GURUGURU” / “Love and Bass” is bound to further cement this reputation; both tracks will be initially exclusive to Beatport from 20 December, hitting other digital vendors and streaming services on 3 January.
