Blissful Misunderstandings nasceu de uma situação inesperada — Jonny ouviu a sua esposa a cantarolar uma melodia enquanto preparava um gravador de som portátil. Pensando que tinha captado algo original e espontâneo, decidiu transformá-la numa composição completa, adicionando acordes de R&B com influência jazzística, uma batida de hip-hop descontraída e linhas de guitarra expressivas, inspiradas no uso do wah-wah de Jimi Hendrix.
No entanto, quando mais tarde mostrou a faixa terminada à sua esposa, ela revelou que a melodia que ele tinha desenvolvido afinal não era aquilo que ele pensava — era, na verdade, parte de uma música dos System of a Down que ela estava a cantarolar distraidamente. Este momento de interpretação errada tornou-se na essência de Blissful Misunderstandings, evidenciando como a nossa perceção pode ser falível, mas também como esses "erros" podem dar origem a criações inesperadas e belas.

Against the background of a damaged brick building, the solitary figure in Victim of the City Streets #2 bows her head as she shuffles down the sidewalk. Her posture and tattered footwear, along with the stark setting and intense color palette, convey the bleak circumstances of urban life for some African Americans during the period. John Biggers depicted the struggles of those living in his community in order to call attention to racial and economic injustices.

ALICE WALTON: John Thomas Biggers is one of the most important of the early twentieth century, African American artists. It's interesting--whether you would consider him a regionalist or not, I think he was influenced by Benton and the regionalists, because he sticks with reality and he often focuses, such as in the painting Victim of the City Streets [#2], on downtrodden African Americans and the very difficult lives that they led, particularly in large metropolitan areas.

Biggers studied at Hampton University, a historic black college in Virginia, under other groundbreaking African American artists--some of my favorites in fact, Charles White and Elizabeth Catlett, who are also in the Crystal Bridges collection. Most of his images due to black mythology, spirituality, and the reality of the position of African Americans in society.

John attended Pennsylvania State University after his time at Hampton, where he earned a PhD in Art Education. He then went on to found the Art Department at Texas Southern University, a historic black college in Houston, and then spent the next 24 years training a new generation of African American artists and teachers. This may be his greatest legacy.
