My Sexual Experiences

'Penta' is best described as a structured and sectored improvisation. I wrote/conceptualized it for double bass, acoustic guitar and electronics. The idea behind this piece is that the timbres of the acoustic instruments are being extended by means of the electronics. The bass and the guitar each have their own electronic processing operated by a second player. The structure of the piece is in five parts. Those five parts are (loosely) prescribed in intensity, timbre, lenght and in one part also in pitch material. The last part is described in a somewhat less concrete way ("avoid each other"), which after a few rehearsals took on a really nice shape. The different parts contrast strongly with each other. The inspiration for these workmethods come strangely enough from the old tape music techniques of the fifties. Especially influential was G.M. Koenig's piece "Essay".

The electronics part is done with two iBook laptops running Cycling '74's Max/Msp software. Also a Clavia Nord Micro Modular is involved in one of the form parts.

this piece is a study of ableton's warp function, using a 27-second sample of the opening chords of debussy's prelude canope. by stretching the sample at different levels, strange and unpredictable glitches are made audible, pulling us into a microcosm inside the instrument, opening up the wood and swallowing us whole. in this soundworld, time becomes a texture; texture becomes a rhythm. a piano dies and is reborn.

Tuesday Evening

In spring 2018, the Conlon foundation organised a call in collaboration with the Orgelpark for compositions for the Utopa Baroque Organ. This instrument is brand new in the Orgelpark and makes a historical sound structure accessible by means of digital technology such as MIDI and OSC. Both the invited composers for the call — Danny de Graan, Janco Verduin, Laurens van der Wee, and Zeger de Vos — and the Conlon board composers — Boris Bezemer, Ji Youn Kang, Robert van Heumen and Christina Oorebeek — have researched the organ and its many sound possibilities - each in their own way, leading to eight completely different maiden voyages with this new intrument.

Sound the @hyperdub klaxon! Label regular and @uiqmusic bossman @LeeGamble is releasing part two of his three-part album 'Flush Real Pharynx' this November.

The new chapter, an eight-tracker titled 'Exhaust', builds on the overarching narrative first introduced earlier this year on 'In A Paraventral Scale'.

On 'Exhaust' Gamble dives deeper into the concept and delves further into the world at hand. A world, we should add, stemming from his explorations into the 'Semioblitz' theory, which focuses on "the aggressive onslaught of visual and sonic stimuli of contemporary cities and virtual spaces".

It's nervier, neon-hued and more chaotic that the previous volume. In typically Gamble style it's an exploration of familiar, brain-aching real-world reflections and computer-generated sound design intended to provoke dancers instead of chin-strokers, with faint hints and intentional hues of jungle, rave and techno obliterated and rebuilt in shiny new mutated forms. 

On track 'Envenom' Gamble offers up a heady, woozy number that fuses those forms all together, all at one time, all in one track. A thrill-seeking tune that refuses to sit still, constantly changing course and tempo much like a race car speeding around a course right up until the end. 

Hyperdub will release 'Exhaust' on November 15.

This piece is about broken lines. Not only is the main gesture broken three times by a recurring event, slightly varied each time; the gong also functions as a kind of breaker - it stops the continuous movement of the music for a few seconds. Furthermore, the static line of the harmony is broken in the end when the whole ensemble comes in for the last time. The piece ends with a Thai gong solo, when all twelve pitches of the chromatic scale appear.
There is also the personal broken line: in this piece I tried out new things and in a certain way ‘broke the line’ with things I've done before.

Broken Lines

Conlon was conceived to further the development and use of new and existing midified acoustic musical instruments. These instruments are electronically controlled and have replaced the electrically and/or mechanically driven instruments made for centuries; wind-up music boxes, clocks, dance organs and other instruments to the player piano's, so fabulously successful in the 20th century. 
Conlon stimulates the use of these midified acoustic instruments by Dutch and non-Dutch (resident) composers and musicians by organizing workshops and concerts.
