Basel based twins Dersu and Diego Figueira have been spinning funk, house, disco and boogie across Switzerland and Europe since their teens and now converge together as Alma Negra. Coming from a musical family with strong Cape Verde roots, they soon embraced the Latin and African rhythms that are at the heart of the music they love. As dancers, drummers and latterly producers it is the foundation of what they do.

The first Alma Negra edits surfaced in 2014 and there has been a steady stream of original productions ever since. The Basel producers’ distinct drive, rhythmic sensibilities and unique percussive sound has gained support from across many scenes, with the likes of Daphni, Ben UFO and Four Tet to Hunee and Antal playing their music. Their discography now includes releases on labels such as Sofrito, Heist, Basic Fingers and Lumberjacks In Hell. They show up regularly at Gilles Petersons Worldwide FM who supported them since the very beginning. Alma Negra Recordings was launched in 2018 and is dedicated to releasing club-ready records that sit comfortably on the dance floor but bring unusual sounds and arrangements to the club.

As well as a DJ duo they have been developing a live set with close friend Mario Robles and a cast of musicians, it has been rolled out at festivals such as Contre Temps (France), Jetzt Musik, The Reeberbahn Festival (Germany) and Southport Weekender (UK).

As Alma Negra continue to draw their Cape Verde roots closer to the house dance floor, you could be introduced to Funana and Cola/Zouk next to Caribbean Salsa and Rumba. Whatever they bring to the club it is sure to live long in the minds of dancers.

Johannes Albert and Iron Curtis have been leading the charge at the deeper end of the German and global electronic music scene for some time now. Longterm friends, collaborators and innovators, the duo have worked together many times before, and are ready to drop their second long player, Moon II, which comes out on Frank Music in mid-June. The album is a rhythmic tour de force that embarks on a personal journey through the hallowed past of electronic music, bringing these sounds lovingly into the 21st Century and beyond. So, with the new record on the way, we were very excited to welcome them to the Wemoto stable with this excellent mix and interview.

Italian siblings, The Robinson, deliver a mesmerising triplet of tracks on the ‘Nightmares’ EP, having popped up recently on Futureboogie’s 2020 Summer Riot IX EP.  And the FBR HQ has been all of a quiver after one of the deep house scene’s most prominent and revered figures, Ron Trent, blessed the release with a fine remix in his own inimitable style.

With only a couple of releases on RYE Records behind them, The Robinson are clearly fully formed already, as evident on ‘Burnout’, a sprawling and luscious house joint that’s replete with melodic emotion and rhythmic power.

Having been responsible for so many classic jams over the years (‘Altered States’ recorded & released at the age of 16, nuff said!).  Through his productions on the mighty Prescription Records, Peacefrog, Future Vision and so many more, Ron Trent is the epitome of classy, deep vibes, and he stamps his sound onto a fantastic remix ‘Burnout’ with elegance and grace.

In fact, the other original cuts here, ‘Nightmares’ and ‘Matrix’ owe much to the sounds honed by the likes of Ron Trent and other Chicago and Detroit pioneers, as crunchy drum machines, emotive string synths, haunting vocals and sparse yet stirring basslines are all the ingredients needed for the timeless sound and energies contained within these cuts.

Z O L A  (@zola-1 Berlin | GER) is vinyl lover and radio host and as such part of the @drift-ashore crew. 

She started playing music around 2007 when she was hosting a small radio show at university. Back then it was CDs only. She moved to Berlin, found inspo and developed her style of music. She now considers herself a rather picky music selector. 
And as such she is curating for DRIFT ASHORE - a radio show, blog and podcast series. In 2018 she even got her own show on RADIO FRITZ called “Nightflight House”. This woman, simply WOW! 
She organized “Lucid Dreams”, her own monthly rooftop parties at @Klunkerkranich - the best place in Berlin to spend a sprizzy summer vacay Sunday. Hope we can enjoy this again this year! ☀️

FUN FACTS: 
- She enjoys silence in the mornings the most.
- She likes playing at bars even though often people don’t pay attention.
- She has around 65 plants and her eldest is a pilea.  
- She likes Zolastraße in Berlin, especially because it’s just one block short. 

For us she’s recorded a multicultil disco summer revival - full of balearic, Latin, Afro and Brazil sounds and Vitamin D. You can almost smell the sun lotion in the sundrenched atmosphere of her set.
