A Particles debutant, Chris Cargo has been an influential figure in underground house for over two decades. Over 250 production credits are testament to this longevity with the UK artist seeing his music feature on the likes of Paul Thomas' UV, D-Formation's Beat Boutique and Nick Warren's The Soundgarden, with a further half-century on his own If You Wait imprint. Now debuting on Particles, "Wide Eyed" is a low-slung groover that develops with easy rhythmic poise before subtle melodic overtones filter into sonic range. Luscious pads and grooved bassline add to the aural collage before a breakdown introduces a swathe of new elements that fizz to a rousing white-noise crescendo before dropping back into the gently pulsating rhythm of earlier movements. The result is a smooth and immaculate offering from the Chris Cargo studio.

Chris Domingo is another longstanding artist within the underground dance fraternity. Finding success in both solo guise and with former production partner, Mariner, the US artist has seen his music feature on a host of leading labels that include Songuara, 3rd Avenue and Stellar Fountain, while work for Particles included 2021's "Azimuth" and "Lose Control" EPs, before May 2022 saw the debut of his Domingo + moniker in collaboration with Eric Lune and "Sentimental Fool". Now returning to the label, the Domingo+ remix sees an intricate percussive top-line based on elements from "Wide Eyed" shine before a familiar bassline cadence also makes its presence felt. Introducing a new syncopated synth line adds depth and intensity to proceedings before the second half reveals a glorious and meandering synth line that provides a touch of class and emotion to the original.

Subandrio needs no introduction to the particles faithful. A renowned figure across his Sri Lankan home and far beyond its borders, his unmistakable production work has lit up a plethora of labels including Mango Alley, Perspectives Digital and Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat Music. A regular on both Proton labels, a quintet of remixes has seen him rework the likes of Andre Sobota, Juan Deminicis, Trilucid and Matter since a December 2015 Particles debut. Now returning to the label for the first time in 5 years, the Subandrio remix is a typically sumptuous affair with powerful rolling groove melded with the textured pads and melodic bed of Chris Cargo's original. Full of vibrancy and atmosphere at the breakdown, a superbly cadenced motif and rippling stepped arpeggio combine to create a memorable interpretation.

Including remixes from Subandrio and Domingo +, Chris Cargo is "Wide Eyed" with musical delight.

A rising Brazilian star with a growing portfolio of high-quality releases to his name, Tonaco makes his Meanwhile full EP debut with the 3-track "Disurbia / Avalon / Crackdown".

Hailing from the central Brazilian state of Toncantins, famed for its cerrado, rivers and soybean plantations, Tonaco has planted his own roots within the underground dance scene with a growing list of releases to his name. From a 2019 debut on Transensations with "Vollus", a further quarter century of production credits have followed with work appearing on such leading labels as onedotsixtwo, Mango Alley and Moonlight. After first appearing on July 2022's "Meanwhile Excursions" compilation with "Sententrional", Tonaco now returns to Meanwhile with a first full solo EP.

Opener "Disurbia" is a growling, rumbling affair that immediately revels in an unsettling atmosphere of effects and growing synth swells. Building easily within a sonic framework of hypnotic rhythmic energy, a smooth arpeggio brings a moment of light melodic touch at the breakdown before the huge low-end dynamism creates and a seething, head-shaking monster reminiscent of early 2000s progressive breaks. A high-energy backdrop fizzes across "Avalon" with its rapid-fire hi-hats and metronomic snare while a syncopated bassline adds groove aplenty. Entering its mid-section, an enticing and free-flowing middle eastern sounding melody lilts across the mid-range, full of mysticism and visions of desert landscapes. Hitting its stride once more in the third movement, a growling spoken vocal and driving rhythm create a mesmerising sequence towards the outro. The final track sees "Crackdown" continue the percussive narrative of earlier tracks as a hypnotising combination of tom fills and carefully placed melodic rhythms combine to create a soundscape full of vitality and brio. Building at the half-way stage with a wonderful bassline pattern, a light and airy melody then fills the sonic spectrum into a gloriously evocative breakdown of echoing keys and spatial effects, before dropping back into the smooth rolling groove of toms, hats and driving beat.

Making a further name for himself with a trio of assured and immaculately produced tracks, Tonaco excels with "Disurbia / Avalon / Crackdown".

Following an impressive first release, Luum Records welcomes Tonaco to the label for their second and much anticipated offering. Since first appearing in 2019 with an EP via Transensations, Brazilian artist Tonaco has enjoyed a steady rise within the global progressive house scene. Noted for his blend of powerful grooves, hypnotic rhythms and evocative melodies, the Tocantins resident has excelled at creating his own brand of progressive house, making him one of the most promising artists to emerge from Brazil across the last half decade. Juicebox Music, Mango Alley, Meanwhile, Vapour Recordings and WARPP have been vehicles for his creative swell in recent years, in turn earning support from progressive house tastemakers Guy J, Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren. With 2024 being highlighted by a thunderous remix of 'Cressida' by Chaum and Hobin Rude for Juicebox Music, a track which peaked at #2 in Beatport's Progressive House chart, Tonaco begins 2025 on an impressive note, making his Lumm Records debut with 'Extrema'. 

Beginning with ‘Extrema’, Tonaco showcases a peak time approach which sets the tone for the EP. Full of dark textures and cutting edge design qualities, the Brazilian phenom expertly blends punchy kick drums and tough shapely grooves, with deconstructed vocal samples, wavy arps and buzzing synth mutations, for an energetic path into the break. Further revealing his creative attitude across the interlude, it's a growling acid line which emerges to steal the air in tension filled pyrotechnic fashion. A brave and unconventional approach, certainly something you don't hear much in progressive house these days, but it shifts the mood momentarily in all its squelchy glory, before a well-timed drop seals a smooth yet exhilarating finale. 

The companion piece 'Gautama' sits as a worthy complement to its predecessor and opts for a sleeker more hypnotic approach. The track's first movement is built around chunky grooves, billowing stabs and a trippy vocal loop which sits gently below the surface. Its rhythmic and percussive appeal is high, in a dark room New York kind of way, add to that a topline of transcendent pads and textural drifts which highlights the break, and you've got a late night floor burner of the highest order. A fitting way to cap off the EP, and one which furthers Tonaco's path into the upper echelon of progressive house. Highly recommended.
