Pulse Emitter - Light From Distant Stars

This album is compiled by by ‘A friend of mine’ aka A.F.O.M. International & supported by @Sameheads Berlin to raise funds for the survivors of the February 2023 earthquakes in South East Turkey/Syria and to provide some sonic experiences to the mere listeners.

Thanks to the generosity of all participating artists and the contributors, 100% of the income, generated from the sales of this album and the tracks within will be donated to Angel's Farm Sanctuary which operate at the affected area to restore life and hope.   Turkey and Syria were struck by two massive earthquakes of Mw 7,8 and Mw 7,6 on 6th of February 2023. Being one of the deadliest natural disasters in modern history, the earthquakes affected 11 cities in the region, with a death toll reaching more than 57.000, more than 110.000 injured and over 500.000 buildings being collapsed or heavily damaged. Urgent support for the rescue and relief efforts brought to the area, included 60,000-strong search-and- rescue forces, 5,000 health workers, 30,000 volunteers, and more than 141,000 people from 94 countries. This followed by numerous wide-ranging fund-raising campaigns with donations from companies, institutions, organizations, and individuals.  However, with an estimated damage over US$110 billion, it is obvious that the recovery process for the region and the victims will be lengthy.  

As the dust settles and the buzz slowly dissolves 8 months after this disastrous incident, we believe that it is the right time for releasing this compilation, not only to raise funds for the ones in need, but also to raise the fading awareness about the situation in trhe region of Sout-east Turkey and Syria.

For last week’s episode I put together a mix of modernist ballads from West Africa, primarily works from the 1970s. About half the songs gathered here are from Senegal, an epicentre of post-colonial cultural forms, featuring a capacious cosmopolitan hybridity which drew from American jazz and psychedelic rock, French chanson, Cuban bolero, Congolese rhumba, Martinician beguine, Wolof griot music, and the complex polyrhythms of Mande musical traditions. Other songs in this mix come from Mali, Guinea-Bissau, Togo, and Benin, joined in pan-African solidarity as well as sharing a modernist sensibility, fraught with both melancholy for the failure of post-colonial nationalism and a utopic yearning for social change. These songs are exemplary of Tsitsi Ella Jaji calls “stereomodernism.” in her wonderful book, Africa in Stereo.

The latest episode of De Kat Memwa comes from Alex Tackenberg, aka Alex from Galax—a long-time figure in the underground music landscape of the Metropolregion Rhein-Ruhr, and a steady resident in some of its most important institutions over the past decade: Acephale, dublab.de, and the ever-iconic Salon des Amateurs.

Over the years, I’ve found myself repeatedly drawn to Alex’s mixes, each carrying that distinct Köln–Düsseldorf fingerprint: raw, punky, hypnotic, fuzzy, melancholic, and always stylistically adventurous. And crucially—played as slow as possible. A true DJ’s DJ.

About a month ago, I stumbled upon a guest mix Alex recorded for LIO Press, and it pierced right through me. At this point in my life, I’m mostly inspired by sonic collages, mixes that weave storytelling with spoken word and evoke a melancholic tranquility. Naturally, I felt compelled to invite Alex to contribute to our series—his sensibility fits right in.

This mix, in particular, feels incredibly resonant. It reminds me of a nearby bird sanctuary where I often go for mental health walks—a space of stillness inside the noise, where clarity slowly returns.

Below, Alex shares a few words about the mix he called 'The Garden of My Own Space':

'For some time now I have been thinking about the coming of spring in the urban space—a confrontation between city structures and the places within them marked by trees, plants, flowers, and the sounds of an unreal nature in the town. And yet, these spaces serve as a retreat for each of us.

Virginia Astley’s From Gardens Where We Feel Secure and Emily Dickinson’s nature observations and poems formed a metaphor, a cohesiveness of my thoughts and feelings. They provided the framework to express these feelings musically.'

The Siberian word «Shaman» refers to a man or woman of medicine who is called by the spirits to a path of service. One does not chose to be a Shaman; the «spirits» call you. You renounce your life, as you know it, to from now on live in service to the people. You walk the razor's edge of sanity bringing the darkness to light. Some of the spiritual work as a shaman is seen in the world but most of it is in the unseen. Living the work means trusting, letting go and allowing life to unfold in its own way - but in doing so always remembering the knowledge of truth, beauty, health, happiness and light.

The term «Technoshamanism» refers to the DJ's role as «harmonic navigator» while erasing space and time as well as common subjectivity during a rave - just as a shaman in archaic tribal communities. Through a tapestry of mind-bending music gathered from around the globe the DJ takes the dancers on an overnight journey, a psychic voyage, and with one finger on the pulse of the adventure and the other on the turntables, gives the dancers a safe passage back down to earth. 
The dj's capacity as a technoshaman is consistent with the anthropological definition of a shaman as keeper of ecstatic techniques which help his/her followers embark on a mental and emotional path that transcends their normal definition of reality. As in the shamanic traditions of many nonwestern societies the result of the ecstatic experience at raves is to create a framework for spiritual healing: a positive spiritual transformation, a clearer state of consciousness, new energy and perspectives on your life, inner growth. Inner peace is found, time stops.
