"I wanted to create a journey of various textures, tempos and time signatures that can be listened to at home, and hopefully it's a bit more challenging than a typical DJ set. I used dub-mixing techniques at my studio so I got to use music that I wouldn't normally get to play and let them breathe a bit more instead of smashing tracks together on a DJ set-up. I've included music from Autechre, Aphex Twin, FSOL, Cocktail Party Effect, Isa Bassi, and Squarepusher as well as new music from KSP and Dot Product."

A true sonic renegade and avid explorer of bespoke sound creation, the 50th instalment of the Constructions Podcast series is helmed by the indelible Kamikaze Space Programme (Osiris Music, Mote Evolver, MORD, WNCL).

Carving out a prolific career with aliases such as Raiden, and Dot Product (with Adam Winchester) and running the pioneering Offkey, & Voodoo imprints, Christopher Jarman is an artist that has continuously evolved and refined his sound over the past two decades.

Employing dub-mixing techniques at his studio to create this mix, he traverses the far reaches of obscure electronica for an hour-long journey into sonic territories unknown.

"This mix is a snapshot of where I’m at in 2022. Extended time away from playing out has allowed me to diversify my focus into new areas, as well as returning to some older influences with a new mindset. There’s new music from me across techno, electro, drum and bass, grey area, dubstep (I’m back baby) and whatever you call the dubstep version of grey area (yeah that’s happening) as well as some choice cuts from third parties. The hard part was making it all work, I feel I’ve constructed it in a way that flows well and isn’t too jarring. It’s not perfect but music rarely ever is! Hope you like it."

Heavily influenced by the stylistic features of grey area and non-genre dance music, Constructions 057 is spearheaded by Australian artist, Special Circumstances. 

Fusing intricate polyrhythms, dark atmospherics, and otherworldly synth programming into the bedrock of his musical manifesto, this foray sees Special Circumstances’ second appearance on the Constructions series after taking the maiden voyage for Constructions 001.

As an outlet for his cerebral dancefloor experiments that showcase the creative possibilities lurking outside the realm of homogenised dance music, 2019 saw the inception of his own label, Specious Music.

This year will see several new releases from Special Circumstances, including a release on Positive Centre’s In Silent Series label and a multi-part, multi-genre series of releases on Specious Music spanning Techno, Drum and Bass, Dubstep, Electro, Downtempo, and the grey areas in between.

EPiKA’s aim is to promote and create a welcoming environment for non-binary and female artists playing heavier flavours of electronic music through a series of nights in Edinburgh, and radio shows.

Constructions returns for the 60th instalment with an hour-long live sound performance from Japan's Muzan Editions label boss, Endurance.

"In the past few years, I have been lucky enough to open for a lot of techno parties in Japan, and this has had a big impact on my sound as a performer. My live sets used to lean more towards the prettier, new-age side of ambient, but as that doesn't particularly suit dark clubs in Osaka and Tokyo, I have tried to push my sound towards the more minimal and intense regions of ambient.

This is a set from a show I played in Osaka with Peter van Hoesen in November. I remember being terribly nervous while setting up my modular, as PvH was standing right behind me doing a soundcheck (I'm a big fan)! Nevertheless, I think the set went well, setting the tone for the party and the music to come. When I looked up towards the end, the dance floor was nearly full, and people were swaying back and forth with their eyes shut. As someone doing ambient, there's no clearer sign that you're doing something right than that."

Endurance is the ambient project of Osaka-based Joshua Stefane. Using modular synthesizers, field recordings, and cassette tapes, Endurance’s sound has become increasingly minimal and tonally-focused over the years, employing a minimum of elements to create a maximum of expressiveness. In addition to releasing from labels such as Constellation Tatsu and Mystery Circles, Endurance also curates the Japan-based tape label Muzan Editions.

He is part of the organizing team for Moment, a techno festival in Nara. As a live performer, he has appeared at numerous high-profile events such as Star Festival, Moment, and Rural, with an increasing emphasis on bringing deep ambient soundscapes to techno music parties.

Venturing into the world of electronic music in 2008, Reza Putra Ananda, AKA Ecilo is an artist who embodies the endless grind. 

Finding influence in the rhythms of jazz, soul, and blues, as well as the atmospheric resonances of Sci-Fi soundtracks, Ecilo has spent years refining his sound and honing his technique to become a producer who, while being strongly rooted in the foundations of techno, is exceptionally genre-fluid.

With releases on noteworthy labels such as AXIS, ARTS, Planet Rhythm, Olympian, and more, Ecilo has strengthened his reputation as a producer and DJ with his high-energy forays into all things percussion-locked, psychedelic, and unapologetically heavy.

Garnering support from artists such as Ben Sims, Alan Fitzpatrick, Haruka, DJ Nobu, Jeff Mills, Dave Clark, and many more, Ecilo’s consistency in providing expertly curated DJ and live sets have helped to reinvigorate the techno scene in Indonesia, landing him residences at Bali’s highly-regarded Vault Nightclub, and Jakarta’s Kiko Lounge.

With performances at festivals and venues such as ADE (Amsterdam), Womb (Tokyo), Sonar (Barcelona), and Watergate (Berlin), his genre-bending sets traverse the lines between deep, hypnotic grooves and high-octane rollers.

Steadily building an expansive reach since he came onto the scene, his releases have made regular appearances in the sets of mainstays such as DVS1, Ben Sims, Truncate, DJ Stingray &
many more.

Dotdat’s dedication and persistence have led to international collaborations with Truncate and Benjamin Damage, with his EP with Truncate, ‘HYD,’ still making waves on the dance floor today.

There are elements of horror and suspense, it's cathartic to create soundscapes through mixing and song selection. I can externalise my inner world and deepest unknowns. I hope the music that I play can provoke curiosity and induce deep listening. I like a loftiness, patience, and sense of space that reminds me of the deep sea or the ever-expanding universe, and I hope that translates."

Constructions 064 welcomes Hong Kong born, Eora-based DJ, producer, and promoter, Jungist. 
Known for their "Generalist-specialist" approach to DJing, Jungist’s sonic palette is broad and deep, often finding themselves equally at home spinning chill-out dub in wine bars as laying down tear-out amens in distant industrial lots.

A champion of the rave, Jungist has played in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Hong Kong, and Taiwan and has shared lineups with international heavyweights such as Air Max 97’, Loefah, Goth-Trad, and RSD, to name a few. 

They hold a residency at FBi Radio with their show "Variable Depth Audit," which guides listeners through “bass-wise experiments for the city's comedown needs.”

As a co-founder and curator of Decay Audio, Jungist offers a platform for artists to take on a dark and experimental aesthetic with their events and mix series – boosting the local scene while also taking aim at bolstering international sounds.

With their debut release, “Dark Room,” featured on the Bass Water Freak Out compilation, Jungist has since released on Melbourne-based label Back Pocket Slammers and under the collaborative moniker 'Swungist' with Sydney-based artist Swisherman.

With a number of notable releases across reputable labels such as Keysound Recordings, Wisdom Teeth, Sneaker Social Club, Soundman Chronicles, and most recently his own imprint Altered Roads (to name a few), Brighton native Zak Brashill AKA ETCH is an artist that confidently and comfortably traverses the lines of early 90’s nostalgia, jungle-inspired technical drum work, & euphoria laden atmospheres, with a finesse that has earned him a large and loyal following.
With the ever growing popularity of producers emulating the sounds of times past, it is Brashill’s seamless blend and cohesive packaging of these elements that has led him to be regarded as somewhat of an authority figure in the scene.

From an early age, Brashill developed a deeply-rooted affinity for the sounds of jungle, garage, and breakbeat. His ability to absorb and deconstruct these genres then form them into his own unique amalgamation has been fundamental to the identity and growth of his productions and career - 
“Whilst very clearly referencing those old jungle and drum and bass records, each of his tracks can trace the historical lineage of UK dance music of the last 20 years, taking a variety of aspects from garage, grime and dubstep along the way”.

Also largely regarded for his technical prowess and taste when performing, Brashill’s approach to DJing is as wide-reaching as his inspirations for production; seamlessly drawing influence from drum and bass, jungle, garage, hip hop, and 90’s hardcore.

With a penchant for gruff, angular techno and off-kilter broken-beats, the next instalment in the CONSTRUCTIONS series comes from French native, Ténèbre - an artist who approaches techno with a distinctive language, crafted from years in isolation shaping his own sound. 

Following his acclaimed ‘Territory III’ EP on WNCL Recordings in 2017, Ténèbre has become a proliﬁc ﬁgure for the London reference label. Sharpening his sense for broken rhythms and tense sonic landscapes, he has amassed a slew of high-octane releases on both WNCL and his own imprint, Ténèbre Audio.

After receiving support from Ben Sims, VTSS + more on his whopping remix of Progression [UK]’s ‘A Degenerate Mind’ for Eternal Damnation, Ténèbre has just unveiled his new track ‘Nightshift’ on the new ‘We Are Family Vol. 4’ compilation [WNCL] - which also sees tracks by fellow producers LMajor, Boxwork and Stavrogin.

Featuring tunes from 6SISS, Cocktail Party Effect, Tommy Four Seven + a healthy selection of his own releases, Ténèbre’s mix for Construct is an honour to feature in our ever-growing series.

CONSTRUCTIONS Podcast 029: E Davd [AU]

Upon moving to Vancouver Island in 2016, Emmanuel David Monteiro embarked on creating the E Davd alias - an ambient, housey project with a focus on hardware-based live sequencing and recording.

His first record ‘Star Sign’ was released by respected Manchester label Natural Sciences - “They contacted me through Soundcloud, completely unexpectedly, and asked if I wanted to do a release. I was over the moon.”
Since then he has kept the momentum steady, going on to release on London’s X-Kalay, Blaq Numbers, Childsplay, Rain World, and most recently Sydney’s own Pure Space.

As a performer, Emmanuel is regarded for his stirring live performances. 
Tracing the fringes of celestial electro through to abrasive, high-bpm electronica, he has performed at noteworthy events such as Secret Garden Festival, and Lovejoy’s Orbital Motion with Lou Karsh and Andy Garvey.

2020 sees a brief hiatus from live performance for Emmanuel as he reconsiders his approach to allow for more improvisation and spontaneity. 

“My sound has evolved and changed a lot recently. I think place has a big influence on the sound I’m making at the time. The early E Davd stuff I made on Vancouver island was very dreamy, hazy and naive. 
Van island is a paradise, and this just soaked into me and came through in my music. 
Since moving back to Sydney my music has become much faster, more abrasive and technical. There is much more of a focus on bass and clarity. Marrickville is very industrial and suburban and I attend a lot of warehouse shows with big sound systems. 
I’m making music more for this context now, whereas before my music was more suited to a tape walkman while looking out over the Juan de Fuca Strait. That being said, my music retains a lot of the ambient elements, which I think have become a mainstay of my sound.”

No stranger to creating bona fide rave music of a bygone age, DAWL (Darren Woolard) has been a constant figure from early on within the breakbeat and hardcore scene, well on into its recent resurgence in years passed.

Accumulating an impressive discography over his career, DAWL has released material on revered labels such as Klasse Wrecks, Craigie Knowes, Shadow Play, Furthur Electronix, and Art-Aud's Secret Rave Series.

Co-founding Tone Dropout records with Sween - an imprint that pushes "old-school style Techno, Electro, Acid, and breakbeat" - the label sees the pair handpick skilled and driven artists (such as Corporeal Face, Bufo Bufo, and The He-Men to name a few) who specialise in burly, yet anthemic music, all inline with the nostalgia-laden breakbeat & techno aesthetic.

As an events curator, DAWL teams up with Sween and Ears Have Eyes to host parties under the EyesDropout banner, while also having an active hand in the Dream Therapy parties with fellow producer, Alphonse.

With his latest release turning heads and receiving wide acclaim on the respected Glaswegian Imprint Craigie Knowes, DAWL feels future-proofed and steadfast in a sound that has an ever-changing palette.

Oliver Samways, better known as Syz, is a Bristol based artist, DJ, and co-founder of Method Lab - a label and event series aimed at showcasing the wonky, broken sounds synonymous with the Bristolian techno and bass scene.

As a producer, Syz has had a string of heavyweight releases on imprints such as Brotherhood Soundsystem, Method Lab, Only Ruins, and his most recent musical output on Pressure Dome - a label pushing out cutting edge broken-beat techno.

“Marrying hazy synth lines with slippery dubwise percussion and plenty of sub pressure”, Syz’s musical direction has taken inspiration from all avenues of bass driven UK dance music, crafted for the sound system experience, and regularly aimed at the dance floor.

As a result, his productions have earned him support from chief Bristolian tastemakers such as Hodge, Peverelist, Henry Greenleaf, Cando + many more.

“I have devoted a lot of time to finding  and exposing people to fresh music that might have otherwise fallen by the wayside. My style as a DJ is very informed by sound system culture and how the music will translate over a big rig.
The mix I've put together is a really good merger between old and new sounds and is aimed towards the late hours of the night, 5 or 6 am, while still being translatable to those on the daily grind”.

A prominent figure in the Sydney electronic music scene, Lewis Baraliakos aka Lewba has built a reputation as a chief tastemaker through his diverse, engaging, and excellently curated sets which throw focus at the dancefloor.

An avid music collector and enthusiast, Lewba also curates Sydney’s longstanding Pipin’ Hot, and Brighter Days parties, and has hosted artists such as Mall Grab, DJ Slyngshot, Frits Wentink, and Warren Raww to name a few.

A regular at many of Sydney’s warehouse parties, festivals and club nights NSW wide, Lewis is uncompromising in his musical interests, often capitalising on the niche sweet spot between underground classics and the obscure, ultra-rare, for a signature journey of the highest Lewba order.

As both a producer and a DJ, ma lo explores the deep, dark and articulate sounds of electronic music, often traversing the fringes of dub techno, grey area, autonomic & 170bpm experiments.

Past contributions to the mix series’ of Translate, Wierd, Modern Hypnosis, and now Construct has seen ma lo establish a strong identity as an artist who excels in unchartered territory, embracing the weird and the wonderful to create music that is equally well-received from armchair to dancefloor.

Since 2009, Eindhoven native Nadia Struiwigh has been making music like some people write a diary – daily sessions to capture what she is feeling at any given time. 

With a string of singles and remixes on revered labels such as MORD, Infine, and DFA, Nadia has also released two full-length albums - “Lenticular” on the iconic Central Processing Unit in 2017, and “WHRRu” on Denovali in 2018, with a third in the works.

Her musical output traverses downbeat and contemplative ambient electronica, often “landing somewhere between the sounds of Boards Of Canada, and the cinematic motifs of Future Sound Of London” to beatless, hypnotic post-techno explorations. 

As a performer, Nadia has played alongside prominent artists Animistic Beliefs, Serge, Zenker Brothers, Dave Clarke & more, and has performed DJ and live sets at events such as Dekmantel Festival, De School Amsterdam, Backslash Festival, and Tresor – sometimes incorporating Tibetan singing bowls into her live sets as a form of experimentation in sound healing.

A self described “true optimist,” Berlin-based artist Elke radiates high-energy and a keen sense for unearthing cutting-edge releases from all over the globe.

As a staff member of the iconic Hard Wax record store in Kreuzberg, Elke has garnered an  impressive music collection and a knack for impeccable curations that has seen her find favour within the city’s fervent music scene. 

Making regular appearances at the Neukölln cornerstone Griessmuehle, Elke was also a resident at the Grimebox party series which hosted artists such as Darwin, Alinka, Klon Dump, Marc Schneider, Spencer Parker and more.  

With a penchant for playful electro, percussion-locked techno, jungle, and “stone-cold drumfunk”, Elke has also been a regular at About:Blank, & Paloma Bar - often times with Claire Hex as duo Fuzzy Concepts - as well as performing on Noods Radio and most recently HÖR Radio in May this year.

Constructions Podcast 039: Konx-om-Pax [UK]

Konx-om-Pax (Tom Scholefield) is a Scottish electronic musician and animator, director, and audio/visual artist from Paisley, now based in Berlin.

Starting out running techno and acid nights at the legendary Club 69, Scholefield relocated to Glasgow to study art. “In that time Tom would ignore briefs and competitions to make music promos for Jamie Liddell, or he would be recording classical music to CD-R’s and then drawing on the bottom of them and recording how it made them skip”.

Since these days, Konx-om-Pax has become a globally recognised name, releasing music on esteemed labels such as Planet Mu, Ninja Tune, Art-Aud, and his own Display Copy imprint, whilst also establishing himself as an acclaimed designer and multimedia artist. 

Traversing the synergistic terrain between music and art, Scholefield has created animations and designs for labels such as Brainfeeder, R&S Records, Hyperdub, and Warp Records, as well as artists such as Hudson Mohawke, Lone, Martyn, and Oneohtrix Point Never, to name a select few.

With an extensive discography spanning over a decade, Konx-om-Pax’ most recent output ‘Astronomical Objects’ (released July 2020) is a densely-textured, yet serenely delicate voyage of beatless constructions with a nod to (arguably) the golden era of jungle -

“I wrote the album mainly in the first month of lockdown, decided to re-launch my label and this is the first release since 2013. During the making I’d been listening to a lot of jungle, stuff like Photek… however it didn’t seem to make sense to make tracks with drums but I like the idea of still using that low end sub and adopt those techniques to beatless tracks,“Canopus” being the most obvious example. The record also features a sublime rework of Arcturus by Mark Warren (Atom Earth Mother / Zoviet France) which takes the original version into deeper waters. I also managed to work with an old friend from Glasgow - Marie Claire White who supplied some stunning vocal takes that I enjoyed running through my Granular synth. The final track is a salvaged demo that I recorded in Clarks studio many years ago with Chris playing some of the synth parts and strings by Yamila Ríos".
