2023's festival season is well under way. After what felt like a never ending winter period, the long days and nights of dancing in the fields with your pals is back and I couldn't be happier. To celebrate this return, we've asked UK-based DIY festival and event series Floorless to take over our mix series for the month of May. Over the next four weeks we will be spotlighting some of the founders and residents of Floorless, showcasing why they are one of the most exciting new event series to come about over the last few years.

Taking place from the 4th - 6th August, Floorless Festival was a natural response to those lonely months brought on by the pandemic. The Floorless brand originally started as a series of club shows run by a group of friends who are DJs, promoters, producers and music lovers and have since hosted parties at venues such as Corsica Studios, The Glove That Fits, Venue MOT and The Carpet Shop. Over the years it has grown into an event with a real community spirit, seeing the same faces on the dance floor of every event. This extends into the festival where the music policy represents a breadth of UK clubland with a focus on local talent; last year's festival line-up included the likes of Mi-el, Allecto, Alicia, EMA, Melati, Manami, FAFF and more.

To launch the takeover, Cam Joon - the co-founder and head booker of Floorless Festival - takes us on a moody tripped-out journey for those early morning introspections before bringing the energy right up, rolling through classy techno, big bassy moments and the hint of pop edits here and there. With a focus on UK-centric sounds heavily influenced by his early experiences in the scenes in London via Bristol, where he began his journey as a promoter and DJ, the name Cam Joon is a nod to his Iranian heritage, reflecting his connection to family and friends through Farsi term of endearment 'Joon'. Alongside his work at Floorless, Cam has a monthly residency on AAJA as well as playing gigs at the likes of Unfold, Corsica Studios and The Cause.

The limited-edition release consists of two ephemeral late-night tracks. Perfectly suited to both the closing of the club and the beginning of the ride home. Written during the Serbian national lockdown with curfews enforced and human interaction restricted, the record is full of a gentle longing and conjured euphoria: tender blood-red sunrise sounds for the introspective dance music enjoyer.

The release features a hyper-limited run of 10” vinyl which we expect to move quick. Both digital and physical are available for pre-order now via our Bandcamp.

CONSTRUCTIONS Podcast 029: E Davd [AU]

Upon moving to Vancouver Island in 2016, Emmanuel David Monteiro embarked on creating the E Davd alias - an ambient, housey project with a focus on hardware-based live sequencing and recording.

His first record ‘Star Sign’ was released by respected Manchester label Natural Sciences - “They contacted me through Soundcloud, completely unexpectedly, and asked if I wanted to do a release. I was over the moon.”
Since then he has kept the momentum steady, going on to release on London’s X-Kalay, Blaq Numbers, Childsplay, Rain World, and most recently Sydney’s own Pure Space.

As a performer, Emmanuel is regarded for his stirring live performances. 
Tracing the fringes of celestial electro through to abrasive, high-bpm electronica, he has performed at noteworthy events such as Secret Garden Festival, and Lovejoy’s Orbital Motion with Lou Karsh and Andy Garvey.

2020 sees a brief hiatus from live performance for Emmanuel as he reconsiders his approach to allow for more improvisation and spontaneity. 

“My sound has evolved and changed a lot recently. I think place has a big influence on the sound I’m making at the time. The early E Davd stuff I made on Vancouver island was very dreamy, hazy and naive. 
Van island is a paradise, and this just soaked into me and came through in my music. 
Since moving back to Sydney my music has become much faster, more abrasive and technical. There is much more of a focus on bass and clarity. Marrickville is very industrial and suburban and I attend a lot of warehouse shows with big sound systems. 
I’m making music more for this context now, whereas before my music was more suited to a tape walkman while looking out over the Juan de Fuca Strait. That being said, my music retains a lot of the ambient elements, which I think have become a mainstay of my sound.”
