Please click to listen to the mp3 files of deep brain recordings of individual brain cells, the smallest unit of the brain, in a whole, intact living brain. Each brain region’s cells possess an electrical signature. During recordings electrical signals are transformed into sound to facilitate auditory identification of cells during a process called “mapping.” Mapping is an important step in successfully identifying and localizing the appropriate target site in the brain for an experimental therapeutic procedure called deep brain stimulation which has been used for patients with movement disorders and, more recently, for patients with psychiatric disorders.

"Radio First Termer was a pirate radio station which broadcast nightly from January 1, 1971 to January 21, 1971 in Saigon during the Vietnam War. The program was hosted by on-air personality “Dave Rabbit,” an anonymous United States Air Force sergeant (The two other members of the crew were known as “Pete Sadler” and “Nguyen”. Their real names are unknown.)

Radio First Termer - Pt. 1 (2009)

continent. is pleased to present an exclusive work from the artist Richard Chartier for inclusion in our issue on 'acoustic infrastructures'. "Interior Field Part 2 (Variation)" reworks material originally published by LINE (www.lineimprint.com) in 2013 and culled from a binaural recording session at the McMillan Sand Filtration Site in Washington, DC. This unique historical site, built in 1905, is currently slated for almost complete demolition and redevelopment. Chartier was given special access to record at this site during a sudden major rainstorm. Vast vaulted catacomb chambers with floor surfaces covered in four feet of sand create an unexpectedly deep acoustic field.

Radio Brouhaha is a resonance program conceived by Lionel Ruffel elaborated through activities with the  Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) in Berlin, the Centre Pompidou, Paris and Espace Khiasma, Les Lilas. For The Publishing Sphere at HKW, Radio Brouhaha is convened and produced by the continent. experimental publishing collective (http:// continentcontinent.cc/).

Radio, as a medium, thrives through the mutations presented by the digital, becoming anachronistically essential for diffusions and publications that overflow the medium of books. Radio Brouhaha produces live programs from sites of research and creation.

Publication, in the contemporary moment, is characterised by the multiplication and diversification of its modes of gathering attentions: books, performances, readings, salons, groups, and various digital spaces. Radio Brouhaha articulates the difference between a literature-silence, typified by print, and a literature-brouhaha. Realtime and artifactual exhibitions, performances, in situ activations, and multimedia are examples, the purview and concern of experimental publishing collective continent. Already Gone

What is it that allows us to believe, to have faith, to project beyond that which seems to be before us? John Modern, who teaches in the Department of Religious Studies at Franklin & Marshall College, presents us with a problematising sermon from the pulpit of neuroscience. Specifically: Modern offers a bent response to the calls to turn the study of religion into a “proper science”. Reflecting on his own time as a control subject in a neuroscience laboratory, this audio contribution sounds out our neuro-saturated frame. 
Cognitive models have become abundantly present—on digital devices and countless screens, in politics, business, research agendas, education, and criminology, in pharmaceutical research and electroconvulsive treatment centers, in medical imaging suites and the percolating chatter of children’s television. In light of Foucault’s insistence that the analytic nature of discourse is overwhelming, overarching, and overreaching, might these models of the neuromatic carry bodies and minds along their territory? How to contend with these models and the brain games we are invited to play with every keystroke and swipe of the screen? In “Already Gone”, Modern explores the limits and lacuna of this immanent frame, those moments and/or spaces not always already colonized by the brain thinking about the brain thinking about the brain. Can we differentiate between truth and mistruth of a rampant and projective science, going through peaks of inflated expectations and troughs of disillusionment before concretising and formulating more reasonable conjectures? To what degree is neuroscientific discourse all-encompassing? Might its overwhelming saturation be an opportunity to transcend it?
