In 2012 Claus Fovea self released a cassette containing 10 tracks, he was at his Swedish beginnings. 9 years later we re-discovered his tape, thanks to Sam. It still sounded so true and relevant to us that we decided to release it on vinyl. Claus then reworked some tracks, scrap some, and made few new. Florin Büchel mixed them down and Andrea Merlini mastered them. The result is a picture frozen in time, in between now and then, the struggle, and sadness, that fragile construction of hope shattered as time goes by, like nothing ever change. It is indeed, as he sings, just the same song playing all the time. Over and over.

DC Promo Tracks #890: Florin Büchel "Serendipity"

Forthcoming on the interesting Berlin/Barcelona-based label MM Discos, Florin Büchel’s “Serendipity”, a Balearic as hell four-track EP carved with a charming laid-back style, cheerful melodies, and playful percussions, something rather different from his output as C C O (Contra Communem Opinionem), through which the skilled and creative Swiss producer explores darker sounds such as Acid and Electro. Two solid remixes by Romain FX and Bonnie & Kleine wrap up the release.

Always loyal to his love for analogue machines, Florin’s sunnier and more hedonist productions put to test his versatility – and he fails to disappoint. Premiered here, his “Multiple Discovery” is a gorgeous and sensual 100-BPM piece, full of tropical vibes mainly provided by its smooth and sandy synth layers plus its bouncing and breezy bassline, a theme definitely devoted to triggering warm summer feelings during the cold season.

The rise of the "balearica movement" in the last years has been well supported by dj's and producers from Switzerland, being Zurich one of the most influent cities of the scene, contributing artists like Lexx or Kejeblos and labels like "Phantom Island" that lately have been inside the radar more than ever.

Besides of his brilliant work as "mixer" for different labels, Florin Büchel has been building a great reputation under his both monikers. "CCO", where the Swiss' producer explores darker sounds like acid or elektro; and under his own name where he dares with more sunny and hedonist productions.

Florin Büchel lands in MM Discos with "Serendipity EP" a work that follows the style of his productions signed on "Phantom Island". Always loyal to his love for analogue machines, Zurich' based producer delivers a heavenly landscape, built beat after beat with a charming laid back style, cheerful melodies and playful percussions.

Romain FX takes over the control on "Serendipity" and brings the track to his own territory, delivering an effective "80's-italo-styled" version of the original made by Florin Büchel.

Closing the EP, MM Discos' in-house producers Bonnie & Klein, take back the mediterranean vibe and the sunglasses to remind us that the summer hasn't finished yet.

Acid Ernst is the alias of Konstantin Unwohl. He’s reviving the MRT series with four tracks of different qualities. The A side is pushing in every direction, relentless rhythms, depressed melodies coming in waves and sombre lyrics. As to bring sadness and frustration in an otherwise angry techno room. The B side is rather sombre, with a masterpiece that goes by the name Ehering and a dark number called Deine Stiche taten Weh. The perfect starting point to close the MRT chapter, the first of 4 releases that will conclude this adventure.

There are only few constants in life, Speedparade is one of them. The now infamous party at Mikro Zurich launches its first compilation featuring friends and talents across the borders. The collection contains more than 30 songs and features some of the most intriguing electronic music subgenres out there. The album will be        available as a free download on Bandcamp, Slsk and Torrent on August 12 2022 (one day before the actual rave).  A 2xCD + T-Shirt will be available soon - so stay tuned.

Naamal M’bae aka Nam’s is next on Lux Rec, namely, number 49. The young musician is all dark and desperation, fast, angry and on point. Song titles are quite explicative of the mood one will swirl into. A 7” with an extremely fresh take on all the things we like. Bitter frustration. Spiralling down into chaos.

Swiss label Phantom Island's second compilation features 5 previously unreleased tracks from the label's roster. The A-side kicks off with L.A.-based Maraschino remixed by Fuga Ronto, a bass-laden treatment that nods to the dancefloor. Second is Zurich's own crooner who is looking for fun: Moreeats, remixed by label co-owner Kejeblos. This is groove-heavy business that will get stuck in your ears. The B-side leads into dreamier realms, starting with CCO (Florin Büchel) in his most cosmic acid outfit. Followed by Ethimm, whose contribution proves his ability to create a romantic genre mix on a carefully arranged mid-tempo tune. The EP is brought to a close by Lexx with a soothing instrumental that will take you safely through a gentle drizzle of rain. The cover artwork by artist Anna Hilti is a depiction of 6 orchid species that are in danger of extinction in Switzerland. Uncommon species for sure!

This month we have a patch using the Cwejman PH8 as a central modulator and the QMMF4 as an oscillator bank. It is also exploiting the QMMF4 gain-staging that can easily be overdriven with CV on the VCAs. 

The QMMF4 is set up for self-oscillation, with the first band using the Osc Sat mode and the other three the normal Osc mode. The first band is tuned to a low fundamental, the second is two octaves above, the third band is tuned to a fifth and the fourth band to a minor third. The main QMMF4 MMF output goes to a SPH2 to smooth out the edges, the SPH2 L and R outs are used for the final stereo recording. 

For the modulation, a PH8 and CTG-VC are used to open the individual QMMF4 VCAs. The right side of the PH8 is set to a rising sawtooth and the first (0°) output is used to trigger the CTG-VC, which in turn opens QMMF4 band one with the bass note. The 90°, 180° and 270° outputs of the left PH8 side (set to sine) open the other three QMMF4 bands. Finally, for a simple FM path, the Pre VCA output of the second QMMF4 band is routed to a VCA4MX and then to a CV input of the first QMMF4 band. The FM path is opened with the 180° saw output of the right PH8 side, so the FM comes and goes in time with the quadrature action. 

Finally, there is a separate pinging sound to make the whole thing a bit more interesting. The source is a D-LFO saw, which is routed to another VCA4MX channel, from there to a RES4, to a Doepfer A199 spring reverb and (separately from the main drone) out to the DAW for recording. The PH8 90° saw out is used to gate the D-LFO source via the VCA4MX, while the 270° saw out of the PH8 modulates the D-LFO frequency.

For the recording, I basically only play with the levels (via the QMMF4, CTG and PH8, mainly). First, only the pinging sound is in, then the bass note is faded in. After that, the other three QMMF4 bands are brought in without modulation first to create a chord, and finally the quadrature modulation is introduced to crossfade between the oscillators. As mentioned, the gain-staging is exploited to slightly overdrive the whole QMMF4. Furthermore, I slowly bring up the PH8 rate towards the end of the recording and then back it off again. That’s it, recorded in one take without any further edits, but some reverb, delay, compression and EQ in Ableton as always.
