We are thrilled to anounce a typical EKATA mix that goes on a bit of a journey. It has many styles of Electro with abit of 4x4 thrown in for good measure! This is a pretty driving mix from the beginning and will be sure to make people want to dance! It also features one of the tracks from her solo release on Censor Records.

EKATA is a London based DJ/Producer + Natural Selection Resident who's productions are characterised by their dark and atmospheric soundscapes, driven by pulsating rhythms and intricate synth work.
Determined to create music that is unearthly, idiosyncratic and exuding futurism of that of a sci-fi film, she always ensures a story is to be told in each track she produces.
She mainly sticks to the dark and eerie side of Electro/Techno in her productions & gigs, where she will take you on a dark and twisted journey through incredibly dystopian, ominous grooves and obvious sci-fi fixations which embody her carefully picked selections.

Strange But Dance Music #154: EKATA

Today we present "Machine Ethics", a project that usually prefers to remain anonymous. 

Machine Ethics's music is mainly influenced by modern electro artists such as w1b0 or Umwelt but his root influences go much more into both depth and width. Machine Ethics listened to EBM, Industrial and Electro Industrial for a long time before being hooked with modern Electro and IDM.
Andrew Weatherall and all his projects like "Two Lone Swordsmen" as well as Transparent Sound and Plaid has also become a huge electronic influence.
When Machine Ethics is not listening to electronic or industrial music, he prefers "rebooting his system" with Stoner Rock, Folk and Post Punk / Goth Rock.
He bought his first synthesizer and drum computer in 1999, a Yamaha SY 77 and a Boss DR202, starting to experiment with them using Cubase and to record (mostly industrial) stuff that he'll also keep anonymous. However, in 2008, he got on a very antimaterialistic trip while moving from Berlin to Leipzig, sold all his gear and just kept his acoustic guitar.

In 2020, he has decided to start Electro Project, embracing todays possibilities of producing and distributing.

What new projects/releases with your participation are expected in the near future?

- There are some promising collaborations that might evolve in the future with Lectromagnetique, Ufaze / Slow Process and there are some plans to also work with singers to get some decent vocals in.

Which artists/labels is more relevant to you now?

- Hard to say....I'll always admire w1b0's music. I totally dig the melodies and structures that Captain Mustache creates....I'm a Bass Agenda supporter because it has become kind of a 
turning wheel in todays electro....but there are so much more...for example Body Musick from Colombia tickles my rusty EBM and Industrial nerves... 

What inspires you now to create music?

- My inner drive to create - especially music. Someone said once that music is the best paintress for emotions. And also you get a lot about the character of the person when you listen to the music, especially the more it gets out of genre conventions. For example Hardenberg from Cyber Domain - he's a very funny and quirky guy and you hear that also in his music.

Strange But Dance Music #155: Machine Ethics

As our next episode we meet again an artiste from Los Angeles Interdimensional Warlock (Digital Distortions, Diffuse Reality, Control Data Institute) - is the unapologetically strange, other-worldly electro pseudonym of musical-interest-multiple-personality-disorder (MIMPD) sufferer and producer/DJ 'Scott Charles Findley' (Nordic Trax, Fiji, Iron Box, Infinite Jazz) a humanoid, with deep roots in a wide variety of hyper-dimensional dance music.

Which artists has influenced you the most? 

- I get inspiration from lots of different places, t have nothing to do with electro.. everything from jazz fusion, groovy deep house to indy rock and classical. I love all types of music, truly. In the electrosphere: Dopplereffekt, Wee DJs, Carl Finlow aka Silicon Scally, Fleck ESC, Bass Junkie, Maelstrom, to name just a few. Labels like Mechatronica, Brokntoys, Science Cult always 

What new projects/releases with your participation are expected in the near future? 

- Had to take a little time away from writing recently, but Ive been busy in the studio working on new material, Im glad to say. Currently on the schedule:  A cheeky remix for the great Squaric (Diffuse Reality Records) and an EP for my friends Digital Distortions, coming out in about a month or so.

Which artists/labels is more relevant to you now? 

- One of my favorite thing about electro is that its futuristic-dystopian sound is immune to passing trends in music. Much of the earliest electro is as relevant (or more so) today as it was the moment it was made. Despite being made 30 years ago, by decidedly non-futuristic means, electro still captures that essence of 'the future' in a way thats unique to the genre.

Some standouts for me: Dopplereffekt, Wee DJs, Carl Finlow aka Silicon Scally, Fleck ESC, Bass Junkie, Maelstrom, and labels like labels like Mechatronica, Brokntoys, Science Cult, never dissapoint and have vast back-catalogs of incredible, lasting music that stands the test of time. Impossible to name them all, there are so many!

What inspires you now to create music? 

- Oh man, what doesnt.. Haha. I think, just, living, really. Joy, pain, anger, ecstasy, love, lust, desire, fear, sorrow.. Emotion, in general. Sometimes this happens in a very direct way, other times its not so clear, and Im just making something because, I think it sounds dope! In either case, The act of sitting down and creating something and getting into the sometimes elusive creative flow state is one of life's simplest pleasures, regardless of whatever compells you to enter it.

What set-up do you use when creating music?

- I've bounced back and forth between elaborate setups with lots of synths and outboard gear and totally minimal setups, and Ive found that almost always, less is more. Ive got only one synth, an Arturia Poly Brute, as my kind of centerpiece and sound-design workhorse, and a couple of outboard bits, but my setup is nearly entirely in-the-box and pretty bog-standard stuff. I do quite a bit of creative sampling as the foundation for my sound design, alongside tools like like Reaktor, Max MSP, Softube Modular to take me to weirder places.

As sexy as a room full of bespoke, vintage gear may be, for me, its all about efficiency and workflow, and keeping it tight takes me where I want to go faster than noodling around with expensive modular gears.. Its all a very individual and personal thing, and theres no 'right' way, if it gets whats in your head into something tangible, and DONE.

Andreas started djing in 1995, creating mix tapes and playing drum and bass in Philadelphia's underground rave scene from 1997 to 2000 under the moniker "Tygre." Inspired by the darker sounds of electro, techno and drum and bass Tygre returns from a long hiatus to share his love for the music and art of mixing. Andreas currently resides in San Francisco and studies computer science.
In this mix, dark and stormy electro twists through a landscape of distorted bass and resolves in a post vortex calm.

From the deep depths of Detroit’s East Side, comes Shawescape Renegade who sometimes go by just Shawescape or in conversations, Shaw, for short. An Electro Enthusiast to his hearts core, he’s very familiar around the corners of Detroit Electro. Shaw’s first official vinyl record debut was in 2018, releasing solely on his own, to now having his own record label, Andromeda Galaxies 313 with many future projects on the horizon, set to land in 2024 and 25. He will be in Berlin this year, all of August and September and he’s also set to head to Spain in October, looking to level the playing field with a bit more Electro on the grounds. Neil Keating aka Controlled Weirdness has been rocking the decks and rinsing rough beats for a few years now. As a young kid, Electro and early eighties pirate radio started his obsession with nasty electronic music, breakbeats and hard edged funk. This was the start of a lifelong vinyl obsession that still continues to this day. January 1984 he was asked to DJ at a new club "The House of Dolls" in Farringdon. There he became resident and spun a mixture of electro, industrial, punk and new wave. At the same time he was going out to clubs like Delirium,  Mud Club and Pyramid at Heaven (the first place to play house music in England in 1985) as well as warehouse parties from Family Function and Soul II Soul. These parties were held in old abandoned warehouses down by the Thames. Fast forward to 1987 and the start of Acid House and Neil starts a club called Collision in Islington spinning early house and acid. Through running this club he met a band called Ruff, Ruff and Ready, a South London crew playing a mixture of ska, funk and hip hop. They asked Neil to DJ with them on several gigs and tours, including one round Ireland with Back to the Planet. They were signed by Paul Morley at Island and Neil added some DJ touches in the studio for their debut album. Unfortunately Island lost interest and the album got shelved and the band dissolved. There was one mad gig before they split where they were first on the bill at Spike Island, the legendary Stone Roses event. Neil was one of the dancers on stage as the crowd hurled abuse, batteries and coins. It was a horrible event and The Stone Roses finished it off with an awful set echoing into the night over a sea of flared trousers. Neil moved to New York in 1989 and started going to all the hottest house clubs in the city including parties by Todd Terry and artist Keith Haring. There he met Joel Bevacqua aka DJ Deadly Buda. Joel returned to his hometown Pittsburgh and Neil returned to South London where his sister Stacey had started playing on the early rave pirate station Fantasy FM and was running a record stall selling the latest white labels. Joel decided to hold the first ever rave in Pittsburgh in 1991 and flew Neil over. He brought all the hottest early breakbeat/rave tunes for the party and they were astounded when nearly 1000 people turned up. This was one of the first times early jungle harcore was played on the East coast of America. For the next six months they held some celebrated parties in Pennsylvania culminating in a spectacular event down South at the Mardi Gras in New Orleans, staged whilst the city whilst was on full riot alert after LA had erupted. Neil eventually returned to London in 1992, a week after the legendary Castlemorton illegal rave and soon started going to Spiral Tribe parties. Neil and Stacey started doing a Saturday night radio show on pirate station Chillin FM. Through Ruff, Ruff and Ready he had met Phil Conynhgam, a highly accomplished Aussie didgeridoo player who had been making twisted music since the late seventies. Discovering a mutual love of the bizarre they started collaborating on music. Phil released a record on the Stay Up Forever label and on the flip there was a hard and nasty Controlled Weirdness mix. Neil and Phil formed the infamous Waxhead Perverts and embarked on a tour of Germany. Over the next few years there were plenty of mad parties and events. Neil did a 3 hour DJ mastermix on Saturday night on Kiss FM Berlin. Back in London he was playing at The Dead by Dawn parties, held by Christoph from Praxis as well as Techno clubs like Hardware, Electric Underground and Analogue City. In 1996 he formed Unearthly records and the first releases were distributed by Spiral Tribes Network 23. Since then he has played worldwide from plush clubs to dirty warehouses and has appeared on a variety of labels  including Audio Illusion, Control Tower, Praxis, Zhark, Dirty Needles, Fdb and Still Raven.
