Robotica

A commodity product, machine packed. It's not quite a lie, but it's not quite the truth either. Or at least it's a phrase that covers up the truth.

"Some settling may occur." It lives on the edge of acceptability. It sets your expectations. It says, "get ready to be disappointed."

So who's settling? The consumer. For a weak product, and probably a lie. 

Imagine if instead, the product exceeds expectations without lowering them first. No need for a disclaimer; the product simply delights. Then you don't have to worry about disappointment. You are so far ahead of the level of acceptability, that you don't worry about failure. 

Consistently contributing more value than you extract eliminates the need for disclaimers, excuses, and half-truths.

Some Settling May Occur

The pace of today can get the best of even the best of us. The need to be connected, to be always available. It's an expectation that we can't live up to. James Gleick calls it "hurry sickness" in Faster: The Acceleration of Just About Everything (though I don't think he was the one who coined the term).

I call it "silicon sickness." There is no cure, but there are salves. One of mine is dub reggae. The kick drum is my heartbeat. The bass is the blood in my veins. It's elemental, medicinal. 

Now, I can't create the magic of the great King Tubby or Augustus Pablo, obviously. But this piece is informed by it. A relaxed, take-your-time-type-of-tempo, an easy backbeat, and the instrument that reminds me of the beach. The under-appreciated ukulele. 

Makes me feel better, hope that it will make you feel better too. Remember that you have to downshift to gather more power.

Downshift Dub

In baseball, "defensive indifference" is ruled when the defensive team is indifferent to the actions of the offensive team. Go ahead and steal second. You won't get credit in the box score, however. The team in the field didn't try to defend it.

I've been thinking of the term in a different way, though. Indifference as a defense mechanism. To skip the hard work of engaging and solving issues by writing them off. Not to get all hipster-bashing, but this seems to have evolved from the seeds of sarcasm that my generation planted. It started by deriding what we didn't like, until the overflow of information made attention more scarce. It was hard to offer judgement on everything, after all. Your only defense is to opt out of a strong emotion. Let it pass.

As an artist, indifference is the worst outcome. You are trying to communicate, to inspire, to provoke. You want some kind of reaction. Positive, negative—either is better than indifference.

How will you create a story that connects? A story that's worth the effort on the reader/listener? One that survives the filter?
