THE DREAM

We are on a rooftop bar in Manhattan. Friday sunset, dinner plans to meet someone. We see an old friend, she jumps up to greet us. "How have you been? Congrats! Good God, it's been so long." 

So we start talking--silhouettes over the water. I've never seen golds, or reds, or blues like this in my life. The photographs that I would take do no justice at all, at all. The photographs that you would make was the last thing that I recall before the sky turned black--an unannounced attack. A missile or a jet (not one of us ready to go just yet) takes off into the sky. We can't believe our eyes. And then it goes back down, pierces the water. It doesn't make a sound. 

I grab your hand and we run for our lives. As I'm running for yours, are you running for mine? We pass so many people along the streets. 
Every one of them you. Every one of them me.

But then someone screams out that it's going to be alright. The missile's stopped because a child did what was right. They said she swam towards it right away because each one of us deserves to live another day. 

It's not that she wasn't afraid. 

And I woke up that day feeling grateful and ashamed.
