A love that was never on track...
Hopin' On A Train by Songwriter Edwin H. Balder
We planted oaks the spring we married,
Took out loans on thirty acres,
She'd hum hymns hangin' up the wash,
I'd kiss the sweat off of her neck—
Lord, we were young
And the dirt was soft as a prayer.
Now I'm leanin' 'gainst this station wall,
Watchin' conductors make their calls,
Every whistle cuts like that screen door slam,
Hopin' her shadow might walk out again—
But the platform stays bare,
And I'm wonderin' if she's even aware...
The bank man came with papers folded,
That last drought took all the cotton,
She took a job at Ray's Diner,
Started smokin' by the river—
One Tuesday evenin'
Her apron hung empty on the chair.
Now I'm leanin' 'gainst this station wall,
Watchin' conductors make their calls,
Every whistle cuts like that screen door slam,
Hopin' her shadow might walk out again—
But the platform stays bare,
And I'm wonderin' if she's even aware...
Steel wheels screech like a barn owl cryin',
I'm squintin' through the dust and siding,
Some blonde woman waves from Car 9,
I'm runnin' tracks, losin' my mind—
Was that her hand?
Was that our old suitcase she carried? 
Maybe that's her perfume in the coal smoke,
Maybe this hope's just the whiskey talkin',
The tracks stretch north where the cold wind blows—
She always said that's where she'd go...
Now I'm crumblin' on this station floor,
Conductor says "Ain't no more..."
That whistle fades like her last goodbye,
And all I'm left with is this lonesome "why?"—
Was that her there?
Or just the ghost I'll always chase somewhere...
Is that her...
In that blue dress swayin'?
Is that her...
Turnin' to face me?
Is that her...
Or just the night air playin'?
