In this installment of Sound Advice, we talk to Joshwa, the UK DJ/producer known for flipping classic samples from disco, hip-hop and beyond into tech house bangers. Joshwa runs his own label No Bad Fridays and its sub-label No Bad Edits, but he’s also released on imprints like Spinnin’ Deep and Hot Creations, and collaborated with artists like Solardo, FISHER and Noizu. In this exclusive interview, we speak to Joshwa about how he built his career: from studying labels and genres to posting free music and creating community through SoundCloud. He gives advice on transitioning from bedroom producer to international touring DJ, how to set up demos the right way, his favorite producer plug-ins and more.

Fertile soil, churned by lonesome feet,
Holds the weight of promises we couldn’t keep.
Icy eyes stare through a whiskey-soaked dawn,
Curses howled where the river runs strong.
A scarecrow sags, straw spillin’ like tears,
Leakin’ old memories, haunted by years.
The blues hum low, a freight train’s moan,
Draggin’ my soul from a lover’s gone.
Broken chairs crash from a heartache’s height,
Landin’ in puddles of yesterday’s fight.
Horizon’s heavy, a gray shroud of pain,
Her locket swings, holdin’ locks of rain.
Trains rumble past, leavin’ dust and ache,
Smoke curls up where my dreams break.
I’m overgrown with fields of regret,
A patched-up man, payin’ love’s debt.
Still, in the mud, a spark holds tight,
Singin’ soft comfort through the long, cold night.
Old coins rust in wells of desire,
Their wishes drowned in a heart’s quagmire.
This road’s my home, gritty and worn,
