Back to the Old Days is a tribute to the history of Jamaican music, from its beginnings to our times. And also a way to remember that despite these difficult times, hopefully we will soon return to the normality we had and be able to enjoy music with live events.

Thanks to great artists with whom we share a passion for this music and with the special collaboration of some Reggae legends such as Michael Prophet and Toots Hibbert, may they rest in peace, and Sister Nancy, we have been able to complete a very sincere tribute to the music that we enjoy so much.

Cool Up Records presents their new 12" vinyl album: Retro Game Series. A project consisting of two songs and their respective dub versions. The two singles have been inspired by the classic video games "Castlevania" and "Street Fighter" respectively. Retro Game Series is a tribute to the classic videogames we grew up with and is the first release of a collection with several episodes. In which the digital Reggae, the 8bit sounds and the soundtracks of the best games, will make us travel back to our childhood with a fresh and powerful sound.

This project has been envisioned by Mr John Vanilla, who in addition to creating the covers and animated videos, is also presented to the public with his facet as a "deejay" or "toaster". Under the name of Jay Smilee. He wanted to take the opportunity to invite different singers who usually work with Cool Up Records.

In Vampire Killah, he has collaborated with the singer Colonel Brown. Who participates in the chorus with his peculiar falsetto voice. You can get this song on vinyl with his "dub version" on the A side. And on the B-side, a version with the German artist Longfingah, a specialist of Rub a Dub and Raggamuffin. Between the two of them, they have created a song called Jahdouken, a play on words with the famous "Hadouken" term from the video game Street Fighter.

The music was produced and composed by Mario García and Franyah Tiken at Legalize Sound studio. Using classic keyboards like the Casio MT40 and the Yamaha CS01. Including some other different chips with 8bit sounds to emulate that vibes from the 80s. The mixing has been made by Mario García, while the master is the work of Ibon Larruzea, from Estudios Euridia.

RETRO GAME SERIES Vol.1 (Vampire Killah/Jahdouken) 12" Limit Edition

Cool Up Records presents their new release with Madrid-based singer Payoh SoulRebel entitled Teachings, which serves as a preview of their new album, which will be released at the end of 2022.

It is their sixth vinyl release and their eighteenth digital release. Teachings is presented in a limited 12" maxi single edition with two songs and two Dub versions in extended format. A crucial release for Sound System and lovers of the best vinyl sound. It is also available on digital platforms but the Dub versions are only available on vinyl.

In this release we can find the songs Teachings  (Reggae Rockers) and Liars (Reggae Roots). Cool Up Records presents their single with The Sherlock Horns entitled Chase the Storm, which promises to be the first in a series of instrumental tracks with what is already the label's official brass section.

Chase the Storm is Cool Up Records' first 7" single, which includes a brass mix on the A-side and a Dub version on the B-side. This is the seventh vinyl release from the Spanish label, after achieving a notorious international distribution in their previous releases.

In this new release we can appreciate the influence of the steppers rhythms of the late 70s, with a solid rhythm that allows The Sherlock Horns to demonstrate their musical quality. The good work of this brass section is noticeable throughout the whole song, alternating effective melodies with well executed solos. The sound of Toni Martin on trombone, Pedro Caballero on saxophone and Pepe Rincon on Trumpet makes clear the knowledge they have of Jamaican music. On Chase the Dub we find a Dub version that exposes the solid tempo of this release, spiced with surround effects and a powerful bass line that will delight Sound System fans.

As usual, the design of the new official Cool Up Records 7" is the work of the talented Mr. John Vanilla.

“Beware” is the third single by Cool Up Records who in this occasion have the special participation of Lasai, one of the most outstanding artists in Spain who recently released his new album “Still the same”. 

Beware is a digital Reggae song whose melodies and bassline have been recorded with the classic keyboard Casio MT-40, an essential musical instrument in the 80s digital Reggae era. Its emergence in this context was introduced by the pioneer King Jammys, with his international hit Sleng Teng. 

In “Beware” the artist from Madrid wants to show the harsh reality of this oppressor and deceiving system we are living in, advising it to beware for one day the masses will awake. 

As usual the illustration has been made by the authentic and original Mr John Vanilla.

SOLID AS THE CLOCK

Solid As The Clock (2020) is the solo album by the Spanish singer High Paw. It has been produced, recorded and edited in collaboration with the music label Cool Up Records. Including 7 songs and a “bonus track”, the album will be available on different formats as vinyl, CD and also for digital download. In ‘Solid As The Clock’, High Paw is expressing her views or concerns on different issues on Digital Reggae and Rub a Dub riddims. Those are genres that fit especially High Paw’s style as she flows easily. Evoking the elegance and protest from the deejay style in the 80s, her music combines entertaining at the same time that points out cultural issues. Including catchy lyrics with a conscious background.  

The visual art has been made by another member of the music label, Mr John Vanilla. Adding his unique style to this project, inspired by comics, super heroes and animation series. He has created an artwork that represents the album and its message. To sum up, this album is the result of a combination of many talented artists, including great musicians who make shine every instrument in the right measure.

SPIRITUALLY GROWN

Spiritually Grown (2020) is the first solo LP by Jamaican Reggae singer Mowty Mahlyka. This work has been composed, produced and edited by the record label Cool Up Records. The vinyl consists of 5 songs on the side A and their respective riddims and dub versions on the side B, the digital release doesn't include the dub versions. Spiritually Grown is a work that was recorded between the years 2016 and 2019, but it is in 2020 when it sees the light in physical and digital format.

Cool Up Records, founded in 2017, is an independent label dedicated to the creation and promotion of Reggae music. It is formed by the Sevillians Franyah Tiken (selektah, musician and music producer member of Alameda Sound), Mario Garcia aka Tenor Mario (music producer, singer and sound technician founder of Legalize Sound studio), Mr. John Vanilla aka Jay Smilee (illustrator, designer and toaster member of Alameda Sound). Three passionate about Jamaican music who decided to join forces to give life to the most ambitious project of their careers, which is consolidated as one of the most serious projects of the Spain Reggae scene.

Since their official birth in September 2017, they have produced up to 13 vinyl references (both LP, 12" as well as 7" format) and 12 digital releases. Their releases especially on vinyl have obtained a notorious reach, including international distribution all over Europe, as well as part of America and Asia, with great reviews in specialized media. Currently they have worked with established artists such as Payoh SoulRebel (ES), High Paw (ES), Paulinho (IT), Virtus (IT), The Sherlock Horns (ES), Longfingah (DE), Lasai (ES), Tenor Mario (ES), Jay Smilee (ES), Mowty Mahlyka (UK), Sailor Smile (ES), Yeyo Pérez (ES) and Coronel Brown (JA), among others, and are working on upcoming releases for 2024.
