psalms and prayers for the road

This psalm is one of the most powerful and illustrative of prophetic psalms. It so elegantly takes the worshipper through a journey from Great Friday to the Resurrection of Christ.

The whole essence of salvation is so powerfully transmitted in the few words of this psalm.

Furthermore, the psalm applies even more beautifully to the second coming of Christ. In this way, it demonstrates hope in Christ's resurrection in times of darkness and perversion.

In this psalm, more than others, the chanter exercised a liberty in splitting from the typical translation of the Coptic Book of Hours, when, in certain phrases, that translation was found to be less than indubitable.

O Coptic bride of the Savior
and light of the land of Egypt,
with a burning passion in my heart,
I yearn for you, O Orthodox one! 

Refrain:
Beautiful is the mother of the martyrs! 
Honored is the mother of the noble(s)!
Crossing the sea of suffering, 
by her blood, she kept the faith true. 

O Mother, your love gave me life! 
Your pain is the seed of my faith!
Passing through the most bitter of times,
from them, you emerged victorious! 

Enemies have beaten and banished you,
they imprisoned you and slaughtered you,
food for the beasts they have made you, 
into every torture they pushed you!

O Mother, how faithful were you,
smitten with love for your Bridegroom!?
His secrets are hidden with you, 
and protected by His might are you! 

What is more lovely than my Mother
outcast for the Savior and His servants, 
O joy to him whose love is for you,
who enlivens the Church of his ancestors. 

O that my heart would yearn for you,
to live in the shelter of your shade, 
chasing down your enemies always
and renewing your most youthful days! 

O Mother, your marks are in the valley,  
Your love is burning in my heart,
The pledge of my devotion and love
is to serve the Church of my forefathers.
