Nina Kraviz launches her трип (pronounced ‘trip’) label with a double-EP compilation entitled ’The Deviant Octopus’, featuring a pair of brand new productions from Kraviz alongside material from Terrence Dixon, emerging talent Parrish Smith & Bjarki, and veteran producers Exos & Steve Stoll.

The idea for трип has been gestating for some time with Nina Kraviz, an avid crate-digger and frequenter of numerous second-hand record stores, who has long wanted to begin a label of her own which would build on some of the principles of her beloved 90s techno labels in terms of attitude and aesthetics, whilst looking for forward-thinking modern productions that reflect her core tastes for idiosyncratic electronic music.

The art and title of 'The Deviant Octopus' comes from a single-sentence scenario dreamt up by Kraviz: “Without a moment's notice an Octopus appeared and devoured everyone in sight”. Supplied with this scenario, artist Tombo rendered his own unique visualization for the artwork that adorns the release sleeve. It's Kraviz's own nod to the labels that inspire her and grab her attention while digging through second hand records, the best of which were imbued with the unique personality of the people behind them. This extends to the sound Kraviz intends for трип: dusky, divergent and trippy music to stimulate brains, dreams and fantasies.

In this respect ‘The Deviant Octopus’ is a perfect introduction: Kraviz herself is represented on the tracklist by two new tracks that take up the mantle of last year’s Mr Jones EP by returning to the vocal-flecked hypnotic techno that marked out that release. Complimenting those are two new cuts from a true master of hallucinatory off-kilter techno, Terrence Dixon in his Population One guise.

Joining them will be a pair of names from the techno pantheon who have been huge influences on Kraviz: with a career that’s taken in releases on Synewave, Trax, Novamute and Richie Hawtin’s early-90s Probe Records, Steve Stoll has been mining his own variant on techno and acid minimalism for over twenty years, heading up the Proper NYC label and releasing under various pseudonyms, such as Cobalt, of which Kraviz has been a long-term fan. His counterintuitively titled ‘Pop Song’ sits alongside a 13-minute 90s techno excursion from Reykjavik’s Exos - the only previously-released cut (originally appearing on Thule Records sub-label Plast Trax in 1998) - together illustrating that трип will also live up to its name in the geographical sense: showcasing great music from historically vibrant electronic music scenes outside of the usual Detroit-Berlin axis.

With Kraviz looking to build a small repertory of talent around трип, this first release also makes room for two newer names: Bjarki is an Icelandic talent to keep a firm eye on, who drew Kraviz’s attention in a chance meeting after a gig at Copenhagen’s Culturebox club, after which he passed her a collection of mind-bendingly odd demos; while Parrish Smith is a talented Netherlands-based producer whose short yet impactful sketch ‘1.0 / 8.0 Afrika Genocide’ brings the second 12” to a bewitching close.

All tracks on ‘The Deviant Octopus’ will feature on Nina Kraviz’s DJ Kicks compilation, out in January 2015 on !K7 Records.

M_Rec Ltd continues to ascend as one of the the most interesting labels in the techno scene. Today's release sees Giorgio Gigli (Prologue Music, Zooloft, Electric Deluxe, Elettronica Romana, etc.) sign two original tracks and a remix of one of the most important artists of the past few years: Terence Fixmer (Electric Deluxe, Prologue Music, etc.). Together, their approach creates something special and unique. In its original track Giorgio Gigli delivers the best of its hypnotic and psychedelic techno. A great atmosphere, where the ambient pads meet the dark bass sound which made Giorgio one of the most significant artists in the new techno scene. The side closes with an ambient session; a drone of pure electronic,dark synth, making the idea of the state of mind of his own individual unconscious.Terence Fixmer's version is decidedly more rough, stripped of certain atmospheres, highlighting a more hypnotic and repetitive attitude. This rough sounds have for many years marked Terence Fixmer as an icon of the techno world. 
This is a great release of modern techno!

Back at our mammoth Stay True Scotland broadcast earlier this month, one track came real close to bringing The Caves' roof down during Nina Kraviz's powerhouse headline set. "I Wanna Go Bang" very nearly executed its titular statement – well, if the song was more about wrecking balls and less about...oh, never mind.

The vocals that stalk the track, so wholly devoid of humanity, rub up against razor-sharp claps and serious bounce in the subs. It's weighty warehouse techno of the highest order, set to devastate dark basements and big tents alike throughout the year. Simply put: Icelandic producer Bjarki has delivered a bomb.

Grip the physical via трип from July 15th onwards.

As the dust finally begins to settle after the release of Pan-Pot's massive album 'The Other', it's time to unleash a collection of heavy hitting reworks from the best and brightest stars of todays techno elite. Through careful consideration and an acute attention to detail, we couldn't be more elated to confirm ten artists we know and love to contribute their unique vision to Second State's first ever remix package.

Kicking things off with a heavily twisted alteration of 'Attention' is Nicole Moudaber and it's a tangled, dark trek through dense acoustic layers of audible madness. Next up is the Hamburg duo

Extrawelt with their twist on 'Optimistic Grey' and they deliver a beautiful blend of emotion and groove they are synonymous for.

Following suit is another passionately romantic number from man of the hour, Stephan Bodzin, and his take feels like floating through a sea of clouds, resulting in a timeless classic to be a focal point in any set for years to come.

Next in line is Ray Kajioka's take on '808 Nirvana' and it's a cosmic ride, ripe with swirling atmospherics laid over big churning drums and rolling cymbals.

Following up on the second 12“ of this LP is a man who needs no introduction: Carl Cox. And in true Coxy fashion he turns 'Riot' into just that: a big room, tension building monster!

Broken Engine' is the next track to get worked over and Wigbert delivers a stunning mix of shimmering tones and growling bass resulting in a lush venture through a cosmic backdrop of flickering stars in deep space.

Joseph Capriati ensues with his vision of 'Fugitives' and he brilliantly keeps the vibe of the original yet adds his trademark big room flair to take it to another level of driving euphoria.

Enlisting the talents of Alan Fitzpatrick to remix one of the slower listening tracks on the album turned out to be magic. With his signature percussion, Fitzpatrick takes the parts and creates a dive deep into sultry smooth waters of seduction.

The first of our last two remixes, which are digital exclusives, come from Paul Ritch and he delivers a grinding rendition of 'Riot', expertly crafted for the more euphoric peak time occasions.

Last and certainly not least is a man on the rise, Kevin Knapp with his twist on his own collaboration with Pan-Pot: 'Get In'. An expertly crafted tech house jam exploding with energy and attitude perfect for any moment, day or night, indoors or out.

No matter the time or place, there is something here for everyone and we are truly fulfilled and honored to present this package of cutting edge artists to celebrate this landmark moment. We know you will enjoy!

The Soma 25 remix singles continue with this superb revisit of the Percy X classic by three of our favourite producers here at Soma; Christian Wünsch, Vril & Lewis Fautzi. Each artist certainly brings their own unique style to their remixes and bring this timeless Techno classic into the modern age. 

Christian Wünsch makes his second appearance on the Soma25 remix stage after his thumping version of Funk D’Void. With this remix, however, he takes things on a decidedly deeper tip, utilising the originals distinctive stab against the back drop of his sub heavy beats. The ever mysterious Vril also delivers his second contribution to the Soma25 project with a more pumped up remix of X Track. Turning in a real journey, the German producers really works the dubby vibes working in some very nice ethereal pads over a a fairly quick tempo’d track. Closing out this remix EP is the ever reliable Lewis Fautzi. His interpretation see a more dark, broken beat affair, opting to utilise the original's string to create a whole new atmosphere altogether. 

Soma25 starts to properly up the pace with this release with more still to come from this exciting project.

Since the turn of the millennium, UK artist Alistair Wells has been putting out a tough and abrasive brand of experimental techno that cannot fail to arrest your attention. Always skewing existing ideas into his own new—often brutalist—ways of thinking, his output has seen him become an in demand live act and DJ who plays across three decks all over the world. He does so under the alias Perc, mostly on his own label Perc Trax, and at the same time he has also brought on a number of likeminded artists from Ansome to Manni Dee. His own catalogue boasts albums like Wicker & Steel and The Power And The Glory, and these have rightfully won him deserved time in the limelight. That fact proves that although Wells has been around for years, he is as vital now as ever. 

As such he brings something new to our mix series across an hour of lively selections. Very quickly settling into a high tempo, high impact groove, there are maximalist techno cuts, passages of angst ridden noise and thumping bangers all bolted together into something uncompromisingly physical and in your face. Franky, it’s a vital visceral offering that would work at any point in the past, present or future of techno.

The 20th release from Nina Kraviz’s seminal трип imprint is an homage to some of the most uncompromising manifestations of electronic music imaginable. Tracing sub-cultures from the 90s to the present day, трип 20 interrogates the boundaries of tempo and form via hardcore, gabber, acid techno and ambient. A mix of unreleased material and essential gems, the ten-track compilation visits трип regulars, esoteric masters and relative newcomers on a voyage to the extremities of a global underground. 

трип 20 continues the tradition of gatefold double EPs as a conceptual album. All of the tracks are selected around a particular story, a trip, and presented as a continuous sonic landscape. All of the tracks are structured in a way that they can be mixed one with another an endless amount of times making a continuous loop, a trip, that needs only end when the party stops. Kraviz works without release dates or deadlines, enabling her to achieve a certain sound bank to shape the story, unmasking the thoughts and unravelling like a dream. 

A1. Biogen – Hexagraphic 

An essential track from one of Iceland’s true underground pioneers, ‘Hexagraphic’ uses frenzied percussion to map out angular geometric oddities. Rhythmic patterns drift in and out whilst an arppeggiated low end and abstract melody interact with each other at high speed. 

A2. PTU – Castor and Pollux 

Animated malfunctions and freeform effects take the lead on this marching workout from Russian duo PTU, first heard on their Boiler Room in Moscow last year and now ready to be unleashed. 

A3. DEKA – Pearl (Nikita Zabelin edit) 

Equal parts gabber and acid, Moscow based Nikita Zabelin’s edit of DEKA’s ‘Pearl’ takes no prisoners with a booming kick and relentless analogue lead. 

B1. Exos – Grasshunter 

Opening up the B side, prolific Icelandic producer Exos administers a dose of uncanny, groove driven 90s techno on this unapologetically minimal, strangely addictive roller. 

B2. Bjarki – 3-1 tap lush 

A distinctive highlight track from Nina’s sets over the past few months - mistuned bells and distressed vocals flurry around cold stabs on a disorienting journey from Icelandic shapeshifter Bjarki. 

C1. Marc Acardipane a.k.a. Pilldriver – Pitch Hiker 

Stripped back, unrelenting hardcore from a 90s legend using raw elements and cavernous acoustics to devastating effect. Marc Acardipane aka Pilldriver aka Mover epitomises the sound of a movement. 

C2. Shadowax – I want to be a stewardess 

Looping vocals welcome you on board for this unfurling trip of multiple guises. What starts as a bare-bone techno sketch evolves into a fucked up mass of breaks, jungle and hardcore from Shadowax, also known as Russian producer and live act Ishome. 

D1. Universal Indicator – 15 c7 

As a sub project from the legendary Rephlex Records, Universal Indicator (aka Aphex Twin) released a series of mostly untitled acid techno with nothing but associated colours from the UI spectrum as reference points. On this merciless cut, reactive chemicals are placed inside a pressure cooker. 

D2. Roma Zuckerman – Zero 

Трип mainstay Roma Zuckerman takes an unexpected turn on this blissful ambient wandering. Cinematic soundscapes contrast natural beauty with computerised glitches, held together by warm, dubbed out synths. Nestled amongst a compilation full of force, ‘Zero’ takes us on a different kind of trip. 

D3. Nina Kraviz - Opa 

Closing off the compilation, Nina delivers an obscure beast of cross-rhythmic machine funk. Shifting rapidly in and out of tempo, ‘Opa’ won’t wait for you to catch up.

Paul Ritch, a prolific artist, has taken the Minimal scene by storm both on the decks and as a producer.  From his beginnings, everything he’s touched has turned into musical gold. His first EP, Samba (Resopal 2006), marked the launch of an extraordinary succession of masterpiece releases. Samba Ep proved to be only the beginning and was an EP that showed for the first time his powerful, harmonic, and deep techno, his unique touch of minimalism marked by his true signature, one that has projected him, ever since, to international acclaim.
