A Moog iPad app was made to play a simple continuous saw wave ... which was then filmed, being waggled around ... the resulting recording was slowed down, to really hear the true phasing effects, due entirely to the proximity and orientation between the iPad speakers and the video recorder ... Enjoy! 🤗

Steam Drone (disquiet0631)

This week's Disquiet Junto prompt was "0631: In a Silent Waveform". The instructions were to "take one held tone and make it dance slowly".

The title of my piece, "Dream of a Rarebit Fiend," is taken from a 1906 silent film directed by Edwin Porter. The film is seven minutes long, and is notable for its revolutionary special effects. It tells the story of a man who, upon gorging himself on Welsh rarebit (toasted cheese on bread), falls into bed with a fever dream of animated furniture, pesky imps, and a night flight above the rooftops.

I chose 554.37 Hz as my single source tone, and recorded 8 tracks of it: 5 on my St Vincent guitar with ebow, and 3 on a Roland/Studio Electronics SE-02 analog synth. These tracks were then woven together and processed with a variety of rhythm-based effects to make them dance together. Additional rhythmic elements were created for the synth tracks by manipulating knobs on the SE-02 control panel.

Underneath it all is a single unsettling kick drum. The rhythm is everywhere and nowhere, something and nothing, like a fever dream.

HI, I used a single Saw waveform playing a C note. I made it evolve using the Mod-wheel mapped to filter frequency cutoff and the knobs and faders of my midi controller mapped to tweak filters and LFO in real time.
Recorded two parallel tracks, one tweaking a square waveform LFO1 mapped to "volume" , the second track tweaking a pulse LFO2 mapped to Filter-Cutoff.

It's Only A Saw Waveform (disquiet0631)

This week, I made a drone in D with three oscillators and Rings.
These are processed through lubadh, clouds, various delays and reverb, with lots of modulation, including rhythmic elements which come in later.  I started out with one tone and then gradually introduce and adjust the elements so the drone slowly dances.

Disquiet Junto Project 0631, "In a Silent Waveform". The assignment: take one held tone and make it dance slowly.

This was a chance to revisit something I'd done a few years back, rhythmically sequencing the drawbars of a Hammond B-3. This piece has a single chord held throughout, with the only variation in sound coming from the drawbars (and at the end, the Leslie speed).
