Track notes: "Lucky Link Village" from Creatures_Once/@miraclemiles (via @SinnySounds) jumped out at me straight away and got me thinking about a guitar accompaniment along the lines of Ry Cooder, Haruomi Hosono and Makoto Kubota. I recorded a simple fingerpicked acoustic guitar pattern which found its way around G tonic of the tuned percussion. I then added some slide guitar around this and affected both guitars with some phasing and flanging to give it a dreamy feeling. Then a field recording of the ocean lapping at the shore seemed entirely fitting.

I really enjoyed the Suborbital Hang Glider piece from @tt16tt and @dandante. I hope they forgive me for making the abstract approach of the drone a bit more tangible. I added a bassline with Generate, some strings with with Blisko Viola, metallic noises from Kinetic Metal, and a simple ping with AAS Chromaphone. The additions sit right in the middle of the mix.

The Assignment: Complete a trio begun by two other musicians.

Step 1: This week’s Disquiet Junto project is the third in a sequence that encourages and rewards asynchronous collaboration. This week you will be adding music to a pre-existing track, which you will source from the previous week’s Junto project (disquiet.com/0637). Note that you are finishing a trio: you’re creating the third part of what two previous musicians began, filling the space between them. Please keep this in mind.

Step 2: The plan is for you to record an original piece of music, on any instrumentation of your choice, as a complement to a pre-existing track. First, however, you must select the piece of music to which you will be adding your own music. There are tracks by numerous musicians to choose from.

Step 3: Record a piece of music, roughly the length of the piece of music you selected in Step 2. Your track should complement the piece from Step 2, and it should be placed dead center between the left and right stereo channels. When composing and recording your part, do not alter the original piece of music at all. To be clear: the track you upload won’t be your piece of music alone; it will be a combination of the track from Step 2 and yours.

Step 4: Also be sure, when done, to make the finished track downloadable, because it may be used by someone else in a subsequent Junto project.

Step 5:  In normal circumstances, Junto projects have a one-track-per-participant limit. However, as with the preceding project that led up to this one, you can contribute more than one track this week. You can do up to three total this time. For your first, you can choose any track from the duets, no matter how many times others may have employed it. If you choose to do a second or third, you should do a track no on else has used yet (it’s understood that between when you select a duet track and finish your trio, someone else may have popped up and used it, which is perfectly fine). Throughout the project I will keep an updated list in this Google Drive document of what has been utilized:

A fairly paired back generative virtual modular patch assembled using VCV Rack, more or less played itself although I did map physical controls so I could guide the overall shape.

Flowing Along - (NaviarHaiku - 533)

My interpretation of this week's Disquiet Junto was an invitation to consider the concerto: its form, its constraints, its traditions; and to create our own composition based on these traits. I read up, listened, read some more, and made my list of rules and constraints. Then I set to it.

I knew that I wanted the solo/virtuoso instrument to be the ARP2600 that I sampled in the Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio (MESS) a couple of years ago. I improvised some chord movement with a generic pad and got the thin, flute-like ARP lead kind of dancing around on it in a single take. The overall feel reminded me of "Deckard's Blues" from the Blade Runner soundtrack, so I ran with that.

Turns out I had also sampled a Deckard's Dream analog synth at MESS, so that became my pad bed. I added some more support with a Streichfett analog string synth and  bass with a Moog Minitaur. The entire composition is 4 tracks of analog synths (and what should be an illegal quantity of reverb).

"The Voight-Kampff Concerto" is best enjoyed with good headphones, like the ones you got at that little shop under the glittering c-beams near the Tannhauser Gate.

The purpose of a musical score to me is a live performance of a piece of music which might or might not be recorded. Thinking about the graphic score vs. traditional sheet music I came to the conclusion that it must contain additional information specific to a certain instrument like timbre or knob movements or the like. So I tried to perform the piece with different instruments, Flute, Clarinet and Synths.

In the end I decided the piece was a trio for Korg NTS-1. The three voices can be identified by different colors and note sizes in the score. The notes are all Ds but on different octaves. Lines and textures give hints about knob movements and density.
