Welcome to Furtherfield's cultural podcast grounded in news from where we are. This ongoing series of podcasts are dedicated to the collaborative-imaginative fieldwork of artists, techies, and activists informing how we organise, imagine and build solidarity, good health and post-capitalist realities. Working together and supporting others to do the same.

In 2021 we celebrate 25 years of radical friendship at Furtherfield. We are revisiting past and current collaborators to discuss their fascinating ideas and what they’re up to. These are critically in-tune thinkers working cross-disciplinary practices, examining various aspects of the Internet now and post-digital contexts. They are changing culture, their lives, and the lives of their communities.

We are interested in unearthing an ecological economy, relational understanding, and lived lives, alongside survival strategies, critical thinking and grassroots systems of peer and individual engagement, as part of the art context. We are examining power and how lives get lived, on whose terms, living the proposition, and what it means in the 21st century.

For this episode, we have three excellent interviews. Two by Filippo Florenzin with Angela Washko and Rosa Menkman, and my interview with Cornelia Sollfrank. 

Cornelia Sollfrank, since the mid-1990s has investigated the worldwide communication networks and transferred artistic strategies of the classical avant-gardes into the digital medium. Her special interest lies in experimenting with new models of authorship, in continuing various forms of artistic appropriation and in deconstructing myths around geniality and originality. She is currently working as an associate researcher in the project “Creating Commons.”

Angela Washko is an artist who creates new forums for discussions about feminism in spaces frequently hostile toward women, femmes, and non-binary people. Washko’s practice spans interventions in mainstream media, performance art, installation, digital art, writing, video, and video games. 

Rosa Menkman's work focuses on noise artefacts that result from accidents in both analogue and digital media (such as glitch and encoding and feedback artefacts). The resulting artefacts of these accidents can facilitate an important insight into the otherwise obscure alchemy of standardization via resolutions.

As usual, we have special guest appearances of experimental noisemakers and music, which includes: AGF (poemproducer), and other audio related surprises.

News From Where We Are #5 - The Radical Friendship series

The line separating conspiracy theories from "legitimate" political discourse or critical theory is far from sharp. Renowned scholars Peter Knight and Clare Birchall join us to to reveal what's at stake and the broader (neoliberal capitalist) context.

Clare Birchall is Reader in Contemporary Culture at King’s College London. She is the author of Knowledge Goes Pop: From Conspiracy Theory to Gossip and Radical Secrecy: The Ends of Transparency in Datafied America. With Peter Knight, she is writing a book on Covid-19 conspiracy theories, which is the result of a one year AHRC grant on the topic.

Peter Knight is professor of American Studies at the University of Manchester. His research is on conspiracy theories, and the economic humanities. He is the author of Conspiracy Culture (2000), The Kennedy Assassination (2007), and Reading the Market (2016). He is editor of Conspiracy Nation (2002), Conspiracy Theories in American History: An Encyclopedia (2004), and The Routledge Handbook of Conspiracy Theories (2020). He directed the EU-funded Comparative Analysis of Conspiracy Theories network, and a project funded by the AHRC on conspiracy theories and the pandemic. He is currently leading “Everything Is Connected,” an AHRC-funded team project examining how conspiracy theories have changed in the age of the internet.

An epic book and an epic guest: Welcome to episode 60! Since the start of this podcast, the Lit Review has always wanted to feature Marx’s Capital with someone who could really help organizers dig into it. Published in 1867, this 1,000+ page text offers a thorough, interdisciplinary critique of capitalism. This book is rich with history, philosophy, and is a classic of political economy. It is also… extremely difficult to read. Notoriously long, full of jargon, and extremely dense, Capital is one of those books that you can read for years and still not understand. Don’t worry though, this episode has you covered, at least to start! 

Monica and Page invited radical activist, educator, author, and founder of Critical Resistance, Angela Davis—yes, THAT Angela Davis, to break down Marx’s (and Engels’!) key ideas with her professorial brilliance, and to explain the importance and ongoing relevance of what Marx had to say.

The enigmatic genius Shackleton’s contribution to Bleep’s mix series is completely and utterly captivating. In his first mix in almost a decade, the music blends tracks from 2019’s Reach The Endless Sea and 2020’s Like The Stars Forever And Ever, the two LPs Shackleton has made as part of the group Tunes Of Negation. These numbers are spliced together with live versions, improvisatory passages and droning interludes which were fashioned by Shackleton resampling pre-existing tracks. Those who know Shackleton from his dubstep days will find that his sound has changed considerably since then - his intoxicating style now nods more to Jon Hassell’s fourth world explorations, Indian classical music, the rhythmic phasing of Steve Reich and post-minimalist artists like Midori Takada. This earthy, psychedelic hour serves as a fascinating chronicle of how Shackleton’s artistic voice has developed down the years.  

"The mix is made up of tracks from the two "Tunes Of Negation" albums, some live versions, and some studio improvisations.  I made some bridges between the tracks with drones and the like that I created out of parts from existing tunes that I resampled and generally messed around with."
