Agha Shahid Ali was an immigrant American poet who identified deeply with the sense of exile. His poems depict a yearning to return something to someone, like love or a home, that's been lost, or as with some poems, taken without permission. I feel that his poetry serves to bring a balance in his hyphenated identity as a Kashmiri-American.

Grace is a distinguished professor of poetry at Baruch College, CUNY, where Agha Shahid was a guest professor in poetry.
