It has been all quiet on the Optimo Music front recently while energy has been devoted to the launch of Optimo Trax but do not fear, there are a plethora of scintillating releases in the pipeline for 2014.

First up is a stormtrooper of an EP from The Twins. We first met The Twins when they were hanging out in Glasgow before they were twins and were simply known as Julienne Dessagne. By the time our paths had crossed in various European capital cities they had fully developed their Twin like tendencies. A mutual appreciation was born and out of that came the suggestion that The Twins might make a record for Optimo Music. The resulting three tracks far exceeded our wildest expectations and we are incredibly proud to be presenting this Twins magnum opus to the world. Haunting, forceful, transcendent music with spine tingling vocals this EP has perhaps a tad more dancefloor capability than many Optimo Music releases but is also a record equally capable of giving your ears a lot of loving at home. 

It was hard to pick one track to showcase the EP but this one is the one that has perhaps been tested out on the dance floor the most and always results in people clamouring to know what it is. The kind of track that completely changes the atmosphere in a club and often results in spontaneous cheering, it has been mixed to perfection by The Twins ally, Superpitcher who will be releasing their debut album on his and Rebolledo's Hippie Dance label.

Producers Kasper Bjørke and Jon Atli Helgasson’s second issue for the label, Bullschnitzel, continues in the futuristic techno and dark disco vein of preceding Correspondant releases, here injected with 80s post-punk and cold wave.
The EP’s opener, “I Love The Way You Hold My Hips”, struts at a steady 112 bpm, with an acoustic percussive structure offset by spaced- out synths and smoldering guitar riffs. The remix comes from Red Axes, a joint project from Tel Aviv-based producers and DJs Dori Sadovnik and Niv Arzi, who run the track through a chemical bath for looser sound.
The Mansisters’ second original submission, “Bullschnitzel”, is a soundtrack for subversion and strange phenomena. Tension diffuses through the deployment of escalating drones, cut with off-key synth tunings and a brooding, regular pulse.
Correspondant label head Jennifer Cardini offers up a remix to round out the release.
The syncopated Roland TB-303 rhythms that drive her “Highway to Schnitzel” are adulterated with a heavy dose of acid, nodding toward the diverse dancefloors she’s worked in over two decades in electronic music.

Following their excellent Urgent Turquoise release for Om Recordings, the eclectic and ambitious San Francisco duo Tone of Arc have contributed their evocative sound to Roam Recordings’ second offering of 2016. Tone of Arc are comprised of Derrick Boyd (previously recording under the name Dead Seal) and Zoe Presnick … through well-received releases for the likes of No. 19 Music, Om Records, and Touch Of Class Records the pair have transmitted a series of moody electronic compositions that draw as much inspiration from cerebral post-punk gigs as sweaty, visceral dance floors. 

“Sundust” opens the single with its methodical tempo and haunting soundscapes, electrified by Derrick’s pensive words. The cut unfolds like a dream as layers of synths and vocal snippets build and vibrate throughout. “The Indigent” is a more stripped-down affair. A straight-forward four-on-the-floor rhythm, accented by big tom fills, creates the space for backwards pads and hinted melodies. It’s a mechanical meditation. Barcelona-based producer Lokier (HAKT, Days Of Being Wild) is also on hand for a haunting remix of “Sundust” that adds a commanding bass line and puts a spotlight on the vocal. Its steady forward motion is hypnotic in effect, intensifying the brain-to-feet aspect of Tone of Arc’s music.

Over the past year or so Field Of Dreams have been gaining support from many of the heavy hitters on the scene without actually having any music released. Their huge remix of Les Crocodiles', 'La Nuit Des Tropiques' being a case in point. That's now been remedied with their recent releases on Pleasure Unit being quickly followed by this monster. Released on their own label and remixed expertly by one of those heavy hitters, Mr Andrew Weatherall, and the hugely talented Mind Fair, this is set to explode.

The Original Vocal mix tips its hat to that 90's indie, progressive dance championed by the Guvnor back then, featuring a heavy breakbeat, huge bassline, dub pianos and panpipes! Then there's the vocalist, Mr Bradley, who sounds, uncannily, like a certain Mr Lydon which may throw some but works a treat. Strap yourself in and enjoy the ride.  Mind Fair drop the pan pipes and most of the vocals, beef up the kick and concentrate on the opening riff, adding a few more drums. Andrew dubs it out adding 808 drums with Al’s vocal repeating throughout.

The phone rang and rang, its high-pitched tone resounding loudly around the room. Each time he let it ring out, far too inhebriated and anxious to face the conversation on the other end. But he knew she'd only stop calling if he picked up, and the longer he left it the more out of his depth he felt. What if she wanted to talk about her inner feelings? Or her deepest, darkest desires? He would like to know her better and what did he have to lose really? He inhaled deeply, cleared his throat and lifted the receiver.

Sonic astronauts Viscera present a new Galactic Service Broadcast: "a musical initiative that aims to raise credits in support of some of the most vital humanitarian services and organisations." Bringing together a strong line up of friends and peers, the compilation features the likes of Jonny Rock, JD Twitch, Nightwave and Kincaid, calling on the close ties they've made with artists over the years through their enlightening blog and mix series. 

Our pick of the bunch is opening track 'Correction Dub', a sleazy dub creation from Formerlover, the new project of Swedish singer and fashion stylist Sofia Hedblom and her partner, producer DJ and artist Justin Robertson. Blending elements of reggae and Lagos disco with the dark sonic underbelly of lo fi house, the track occupies the twilight region between a tropical sound system dance and an inner city basement, where nights turn into mornings and back again. ‘Correction dub’ is a playful take on a late night chat line conversation, where humiliation and desire go hand in hand.

Originally written and produced as the centrepiece to his 2014 FabricLive compilation, Erol Alkan’s ‘Sub Conscious' arrives on 12” vinyl and to streaming platforms for the first time, accompanied by two charismatic remixes from Manfredas.

Shimmering and undulating, the original cut of ‘Sub Conscious’ was designed with Fabric’s cavernous main room in mind, taking full advantage of any finely-tuned soundsystem with a patient, rhythmic trip. Remastered here, the track evolves out of hazy darkness towards halcyon euphoria in a uniquely Alkan style.

Resident at Opium Club in Vilnius, cult DJ and producer Manfredas provides two hugely creative and alternative takes on ‘Sub Conscious’. The first works hallucinatory magic with a supple bassline and much of Alkan’s original stretched and repurposed around vampish oscillations and a westward vocal sample.

On the contrary, the ‘Stream Of Consciousness' mix sees Manfredas pitch down and strum the bones of ‘Sub Conscious’, unexpectedly delivering a lovingly lethargic, bottom-heavy jam that’s pure dubside pleasure.

Lumière Noire’s 30th release, the Esta Noche EP, brings together Italian-born, Mexico-based artist Rodion, a classically trained pianist known for his productions on Gomma, Eskimo and Roccodis co among others and Chilean artist Alejandro Paz of Coméme and Huntleys & Palmers fame, who is also a classically trained musician. The two artists met in Ciudad de México and quickly bonded over their similar backgrounds in classical music and their shared passion for harmony as well as a love for romantic music, no doubt due to the “latin roots” uniting Italy and Latin America.

The Esta Noche EP features three songs which are much more than mere tracks, with a distinctive Latinx feel and unapologetic new wave influences, accompanied by a phenomenal remix by the brilliant Fabrizio Mammarella from Italy.

Opening the EP with a nocturnal field recording shrouding the track in a dark haze, Esta Noche features an understated bassline with an analog feel, catchy stabs and a dance-inducing rhythmic section. As the song develops and it soon becomes evident that its new wave indebted mise en scène and dramatic arrangements set it apart from run of the mill productions.

Featuring the man behind EMET Records, a known purveyor of outstanding remixes, Esta Noche’s remix by Fabrizio Mammarella is an absolute belter, clocking at 110 BPM. With FM synths, pitched samples, elegant pads, melodic squeals, and a heavy, hard-hitting arpeggiated bassline, the spirit of late 80s EBM reigns supreme in this rugged and ruthless chugger, hypnotic and almost disorienting in its repetition. This remix is a reminder that you don’t need high tempos to yield maximal results on the dancefloor.

At 101 BPM, Una Vez Mas is a plodding anthem standing out with its gorgeous chord progressions, reminiscent of Shep Pettibone's cult remix for Depeche Mode. Full of feeling and emotion this is not a sleepy downtempo affair but rather a slice of heartfelt and yearning Latinx crooning with a proper verse, chorus and breakdown structure. Perfectly fit for darkly lit dancefloors.

Closing the EP, Dime Que No is a different kind of Spanish-language new wave-influenced number, with plenty of feels. On one hand, melodic elements including an analog bass synth, pad chords, and subtle stabs support the tune's heartfelt vocals, and on the other, dissonant percussive and melodic elements act as a counterpoint. The way these different elements coalesce gives a feeling to the song that is both melancholic and psychedelic, with both producers letting sensitivity and a certain kind of fragility slip through the cracks on this haunting closer.
