Of all musical genres, afrobeat is probably the one that has had the most powerful influence on me... I remember exactly where and when I heard Fela for the first time. Life-changing moment. For real. And with this in mind, I just can't believe it's been SO long since I last posted an afrobeat set, so here you go... I am glad to say that this digs deep into some classics, as well as some very contemporary composition... Afrobeat is alive and well, with bands across continents bringing new energy to the original afrobeat spirit... I am just loving this... Now dance, baby!!!

AFRO BEAT HEAT #2

Once again, I was blessed to share the decks with my brother Underdog and DrewCool for a new edition of OKAYAFRICA DC at Tropicalia. Always loving the energy there.

I noticed quite a few East Africans in the room, Kenyans in particular, so I had to open with a remixed classic from the region to rep Nairobi, which has become my home for the past three years... I am happy to report our East Af brothers and sisters did NOT disappoint and showed DC what they got (Wambui & crew I see ya'll). That made me proud. Word...

Anyways, as always I like to take a tour throughout regions where African rhythms & music have had, and continue to have, a strong influence... From the Motherland all the way to the Caribbeans and beyond... I hope you'll enjoy the journey...

OKAYAFRICA DC (Sep 2013)

In October, Electrafrique Nairobi was delighted to host our good friend and rising Angolan star, DJ/producer Renato Xtrova for a very special Mashujaa (ie. Heroes' Day) celebration. We also had Nairobi's very own Sarabi Band opening the show, with their high energy and high intensity performance. Awesomeness... What a treat for the Electrafrique family to be able to celebrate Kenya's heroes - all of us keeping in mind the recent Westgate events - in such way. Music is the universal language, and one of the most powerful conduit for emotions...

So I am sharing with you all my set, in keeping the floor hot for Renato's performance. I have taken the journey a little further west to Brazil and Colombia where a lot of the music has strong African influences, in particular in the coastal region of the Caribbean. I hope you all will dig the vibe...

DISCOTROPIQUES is an hour-long mix of tropical disco and funk grooves from Africa and the Caribbean. Even though most of it came out in the 1970s and early 80s, this is not just music for the old schoolers...

Nope, indeed, I hope the younger generation that grew up in a world dominated by electronic music won't forget that there would be no house, techno or hip-hop if there hadn't been disco or funk before that… and all that soulful music that came earlier... and on and on the genealogy of the sound that makes you bounce goes, tracing its roots all the way back to the original drumbeat of Africa...

This year I had the chance to play at the Winter Music Conference along side heavyweights such as Maurice Joshua, Oscar P and others at the Ocean Drive Sessions... Memorable times... I went there with a bag of Afro House tracks that have influenced me over the past year, as I have moved to Nairobi.

This is the first of a series dedicated to Amapiano, a genre that emerged from South African deep house, kwaito, gqom and jazz. Amapiano's been exploding in 2019, and most of the tracks came out that year.

Rest In Power Aurlus!!!

I love soukous. If you have ever heard me play live, you have most likely heard a soukous track or two - original or remixed - in my sets. It's the music whose sole purpose is to make you dance. While Congolese music purists tend to consider soukous and its later evolutions such as ndombolo as mere degenerescence from the "real music", the rumba congolaise, I actually love it for its upbeat energy, strong identity and its ability to bring life to dancefloors across the world. 

Back in the 80s and 90s, if you were dancing to African music, it's very likely you were dancing to at least some soukous, wherever you were... and it's very likely that Aurlus Mabele and his Loketo Band (with Diblo Dibala and Mav Cacharel) were among those hits that got you moving... he was not affectionately called the "King Of Soukous" for nothing.

We lost a legend today, but his legacy lives on through his music, and I hope you'll enjoy listening to this Tribute Mix, taking a trip down memory lane with some of my fav Aurlus tracks.

TONY ALLEN TRIBUTE (PAM Mix)

A short while back, I joined my friend Jaime Del Valle for his Makeda Radio Show on Drums Radio, along with Juan Soul and Mixed Message Music. I thought I'd share with you all my one-hour set, so you can keep bouncing at home, until we can meet on a dancefloor somewhere soon, I hope...

For this set, I went all over the place, starting with some fresh new summer heater by Boddhi Satva and Nelson Freitas, that are getting you ready on a sensual tip... The mix also features a couple of classics from Super Mama Djombo and Letta Mbulu, that have been reworked to move today's dance floors, cuz we wouldnt be here today if it wasnt for our predecessors in music and otherwise... I am also taking you through lots of more current stuff, getting into deeper business with a number of Afrobeats, Amapiano and Afro House tracks... You'll also be able to cross the Atlantic all the way to Brazil with DKVPZ's banger and to Haiti to discover one of the maestro Gardy Girault's new joints called Papa Pye, which I can't get enough of...

I always look fwd to jamming with my bro Underdog. But this jam was on another level of intensity... There was so much energy on this dancefloor, with International Soul Society and the dancers from Urban Artistry. Good times meeting BaronHawk and Mate Masie in the booth as well. Banger of a night! Tropical Heat!!!

So I dropped a good mix of deeper mzansi house (South Africa) and harder-hitting kuduro house (Angola) with some inspiration from other shores, mostly Nigerian afrobeat and Haitian rara tech, all on the house tip. Hope you dig it.
