This song is meant to sound like something Pink Floyd may have recorded. It was written and recorded by myself over the course of 4 days. Most of the recording was done in a day. With a little on the second day. There was a day of writing and a day of prerecording before I actually started and then a day of mixing. It is still a little rough around the edges. In the true nature of The Pink Floyd Sound it is dedicated to Syd Barret. The song is in 4/4 at 62.77 bpm. It was originally 4:20 long but we blast off on our way to the moon at the end so the trip last a little longer than planned. It is in the key of D minor. The progression for the verses is Dm G Dm Chorus is F Gm E Dm. The bridge F C F C F C then the solo is the same as the verse and chorus. It is classified as a psychedelic/progressive rock style.

The best way I would describe this style in general is experimental. There was extensive use of synths and layering to create a sound scape. The lyrics can be on the verge of pure nonsense or appear deeply spiritual or meaningful. They are often very poetic. The music has a rock feel and is sometimes blues or jazz based in nature. The vocal delivery can be somewhat detached, but also strangely intense at times. The tracks sometimes seem to have a feel of chaotic consolidation.

Drums
The drums are tight and bright. The pattern is loosely based on Pink Floyd's comfortably numb drum pattern. I programmed the pattern with ultra beat one section at time then used abbey road drums in Kontact as well as battery and mixed them together I then added some EQ and compression to make them stand out a little more.

Bass
The bass is warm and simple. It stays on the root most of the time with some walk ups and walk downs and pentatonic fills. It was recorded using a Fender Precision bass Directly Inputted into the board. Only EQ and compression were added.

The organ carries the chord progession all the way through. There are two organs playing one is mostly straight while the other on employs heave delay.

The guitar parts are blues based with lots of delay and chorus. There are two separate solos playing simultaneously at the end and there is some panning automation so send the sound around the world. I recorded the parts on an American strat through a JC 120 close miked with an SM 57.
The acoustic guitar part in the bridge is recorded the same way but through an acoustic electric guitar.

There is some synthesized cello fills pushed through a filter and compressed to add some texture.

The rambling at the end were quotes from Syd Barret spoken in an English accent to try and simulate him speaking.

The loud noise at the end is supposed to be a rocket ship blasting off for the moon to deliver Syd's soul to it's final resting place.
The vocal was recorded through an SM 57 in two takes

Syd at the Gates of the Moon 2

I chose to try to emulate the classic Motown sound. I was going for a high energy, solid and fun Motown magic sound. I wrote this song as more of a country style song about 10 years ago, but never recorded it. I think it was meant to be a Motown song so I'm glad this is the first rendition.
The drums are actually a combination of Midi and audio sampled drums from Apple Loops carefully blended and arranged to achieve the sound I was looking for. The verse is a standard 4 snare Motown beat.  It is the same beat that from the style traits, but without the tambourines. I used some EQ's and Reverbs on each to get what I wanted to hear. There is a fill before the chorus and the beat changes to more of a shuffle.
The Bass is recorded live direct into the board. I used a 1983 Fender Precision Elite II with round wound strings (I didn't have time to put the flatwounds on). I have the mids and lows up and the highs down.  The bass line does a lot of walking and lands on the root on the downbeats.
The Vocals are performed by me myself and I. I decided to make the most of what I had and set up a ridiculously elaborate vocals microphone emporium. I recorded it in my daughtetr's bedroom with blankets on the walls. I had an MXL genesis in the shower with the bathroom and shower door open. I had an AT 822 hanging over my head. I had two AT 2020's on either side of me. I had two SM 57s directly in front one clean and one ran through a Voice Live II. Lastly l had an MXL Ribbon mic in front. I did the takes till I got it like I wanted then I did the same for the backup/harmony vocals.
The keys are recorded from a Roland RD 300GX.  I bassically did comps playing chords on the 8ths as part of a the rhythm. I put it on a church organ setting and played along live.
I did minimal mixing and no editing all the tracks are start to finish. This was a fun project. I had to be careful cause I wanted to keep going.
