Whispered touch

We finally welcome back one of the original LT fam, with Imre Kiss taking the reigns for a full on raw-power white label.

With two lucid and hazy releases for LT in his wake, plus an excellent contribution to the Proto Sites catalogue, Imre finally returns with a rough and overdriven in-the-dance EP of floor-crushing fire.

Never is an up-tempo late-night stomp from the night bus exit through dark estate alleys, dogs barking into the long night, soundtracked by percussive late night synth meddling and rumpeting drum patterns that shift and shake.

Taking a lower slung approach, Stateless is a hard-welded fusion of Detroit techno pads and 2-step bass heavy throbs. Absolute cracked-speaker material and one that wouldn't be out of place in a 2010 London basement.

Taking the flip-side solo, Untitled closes out the EP in destructive style, showcasing the heaviest and more crushing side of Imre's productions. The eerie caressing flanger sets the unnerving tone, slowly oscillating over crunched-up kicks. Another massive blown-out bass-line precedes a creepy vocal whisper and more mid-heavy percussive artefacts that crackle and snap a wavy, drifting pad that lingers it's way anonymously into the mix.

Sunrise in Berlin. Wandering through a high-tech street market in Seoul. Sweat dripping from the ceiling of a warehouse rave, neo-jacked swing and off-duty deck jockeys. A picture-perfect, postcard-worthy sunset on a palm tree-lined beach in the Caribbean. A Maori showband legend performing in a smoky nightclub. Wandering endlessly through a computer-animated maze. Daydreaming about utopian futures from the deck of a rotating space station, circa 2001. The flickering evening shadows of a nighttime party in Caxias do Sul. A trio of musicians playing free jazz on a balcony in Paris. Another nightclub, another singer; a Spanish language version of ‘Crying’ by Roy Orbison. Are these my memories, or are they my dreams? Could they be uploaded reconstructions of an algorithmically generated past? Is that a hologram, or is it something I can touch? Did they remember this for me wholesale?

After releasing New Zealand composer, drummer and producer Cory Champion’s acclaimed Clear Path Ensemble jazz album at the start of 2020, we’re proud to bookend the project with a new digital EP of remixes of songs off the album by Kush Jones, Christoph El Truento, AceMo, Glenn Astro, Daniel Hayles, and Champion under his Borrowed CS house and techno alias.

Where the Clear Path Ensemble album was a vivid ode to psychedelia, spiritual jazz, planetary rhythms and celestial oddities, these remixes turn his cosmic compositions into suped-up starcraft. Glen Astro and Kush Jones give ‘Jerry’s Funk’ a series of electro, dub techno and footwork re-rubs. Christoph El Truento and Borrowed CS both reimagine ‘Drip’ for the orbital nightclubs of the future. Mongo Skato rebuilds ‘Future Fatigue’ to a pounding pulse, and AceMo takes ‘Panorama Actual Spectral’ to Saturn and back. Rounding things out Daniel Hayles meditates on ‘Inner Space’ through sparse-but-emotive piano figures.

If you’ve already spent some time on the Clear Path Ensemble mothership, hearing how these considerable talents have reframed Champion’s jazz pieces is a real joy. And if not, start here on the dancefloor, before making your way back into the lounge bar later on.

Jerry's Funk (Glenn Astro Remix)

For the latest mix in our series one of our favourite music journalist's/DJ's Martyn Pepperell takes us on an indepth look into the world of 80's K pop & City Pop. Unearthing some of his rare finds when digging through the streets of Seoul. 

"Two years ago, I spent a feverish week in Seoul. I was staying in a hotel with the most uncomfortable bed on Earth, my back was killing me, and I could barely sleep. While I was there, I caught up with the excellent boogie producer Mogwaa, who was kind enough to take me record shopping at some markets in the city, and smart enough to suggest ordering chicken soup for lunch. I left Seoul with hazy neon-lit memories, a full belly, and about twenty Korean disco, boogie, synth-pop and lounge records from the '70s and 80s. Cosmic Compositions asked me to put together another mix, so I decided to put those dusty gems to work, and here we are. Listen closely, among other delights; you'll hear Korean language covers of 'Just The Two Of Us' and 'Funky Town".  - Martyn Pepperell

Se◯ul Nights [Mix By Martyn Pepperell]

Yesterday we awoke to the devastating news that one of our dear friends Reuben Samuel Winters [Totems] has sadly left us. 

Reuben was one of the most beautiful souls we've ever had the chance of knowing. He was a sweet, caring, open hearted/minded and constantly positive individual. Even though he was dealing with a lot personally he always had a smile on his face and endless amounts of love to give. He was a huuge inspiration for us growing up in Auckland and one of the most talented individuals to emerge from the New Zealand music scene in many moons.

After hearing about his passing while on the other side of the world we immediately connected with him the only way possible at the time which was through his music. This mix which he recorded for us back in 2017 was originally only released on our mixcloud and shares an insight into the heart and mind of this beautiful individual and brought tears to our eyes while listening. We felt that for anyone out there who knew and loved him this mix would provide a perfect soundtrack to reminisce on his memory. 

Thank you for your inspiration, love, music and energy Reuben.
You will live on forever in our hearts / minds and speakers.

Being totally sober and super aware of reality has created a need to reconcile with the past and heal in the present. Is necessary a time to be kind to ourselves. 
This selection has been an outlet for this emotional state. 
Looking for something that was thought lost. Something like "that thing" that made things special in our surroundings: voices, lights, sounds, silences and subtle sensations.
