A couple months ago I started a project to turn my normal journaling process into a channel flipping experience! All the scratch work and raw ideas packaged together. I noticed I loved listening to all my nascent and unfinished ideas playing through my composition journals, so I decided all the new ones I would start making into a listening experience!

Moscow’s S A D ensemble is a duo specializing in the performance on multiple tape recorders. Their new album on Muscut is a 50-minute traversal of “Okom Onu Uwa”, a 2016-2018 compositions collection that hails from a unique crossroads in music history where African aesthetics were being combined with Soviet avant-gardism by artists from both traditions eager for a fresh start.

S A D group, born in 2013, belongs to the breakout generation of Russian electronic producers. Like their peers, Vasiliy Stepanov and Vlad Dobrovolski saw parallels between the early music of Stanislav Kreichi or Sofia Gubaidulina and traditional African music.

Shortly thereafter, the duo deeply influenced by the philosopher Gilles Deleuze and the psychoanalyst Félix Guattari “A Thousand Plateaus” book, composed “Okom Onu Uwa” for “any number of simultaneously playing tape to fifteen”.

“Okom Onu Uwa”’s score consists of several loose-leaf layers, assigned one per tape recorder. Each layer contains symbols denoting sustained sounds, glissandos and short, accented sounds, to be played over the course of the performance, whose duration and instrumentation are left to the discretion of the performers. Additional accents mandate occasional points of interaction between two performers, but the majority of their actions are uncoordinated, lining up by chance.

For the latest mix in our series one of our favourite music journalist's/DJ's Martyn Pepperell takes us on an indepth look into the world of 80's K pop & City Pop. Unearthing some of his rare finds when digging through the streets of Seoul. 

"Two years ago, I spent a feverish week in Seoul. I was staying in a hotel with the most uncomfortable bed on Earth, my back was killing me, and I could barely sleep. While I was there, I caught up with the excellent boogie producer Mogwaa, who was kind enough to take me record shopping at some markets in the city, and smart enough to suggest ordering chicken soup for lunch. I left Seoul with hazy neon-lit memories, a full belly, and about twenty Korean disco, boogie, synth-pop and lounge records from the '70s and 80s. Cosmic Compositions asked me to put together another mix, so I decided to put those dusty gems to work, and here we are. Listen closely, among other delights; you'll hear Korean language covers of 'Just The Two Of Us' and 'Funky Town".  - Martyn Pepperell

Se◯ul Nights [Mix By Martyn Pepperell]

Yesterday we awoke to the devastating news that one of our dear friends Reuben Samuel Winters [Totems] has sadly left us. 

Reuben was one of the most beautiful souls we've ever had the chance of knowing. He was a sweet, caring, open hearted/minded and constantly positive individual. Even though he was dealing with a lot personally he always had a smile on his face and endless amounts of love to give. He was a huuge inspiration for us growing up in Auckland and one of the most talented individuals to emerge from the New Zealand music scene in many moons.

After hearing about his passing while on the other side of the world we immediately connected with him the only way possible at the time which was through his music. This mix which he recorded for us back in 2017 was originally only released on our mixcloud and shares an insight into the heart and mind of this beautiful individual and brought tears to our eyes while listening. We felt that for anyone out there who knew and loved him this mix would provide a perfect soundtrack to reminisce on his memory. 

Thank you for your inspiration, love, music and energy Reuben.
You will live on forever in our hearts / minds and speakers.

Influences (In Total Chronological Order)

— Here is a showcase of my all time favorite tracks, music that made me want to open up my DAW of choice and start creating immediately.
From my childhood years, through the teenage years to now, music that totally transformed the way I hear music and pushed me forwards.
Mildly mixed-beatmatched, this one maybe makes super sense only to me but it's something I wanted to create.
Rules: #1 Only one track per artist and #2 The order is totally chronological, meaning when i discovered the music and not when it was released.

ML607: Bonebrokk - 'Influences (In Total Chronological Order)'

Being totally sober and super aware of reality has created a need to reconcile with the past and heal in the present. Is necessary a time to be kind to ourselves. 
This selection has been an outlet for this emotional state. 
Looking for something that was thought lost. Something like "that thing" that made things special in our surroundings: voices, lights, sounds, silences and subtle sensations. 
It feels like learning to dream one more time.
