The Japanese Maple is naturally found in Japan, central China and Korea. It has been long cultivated by the Japanese. The tree was introduced to England in 1820.

It is a small deciduous tree or large shrub with a broadly spreading crown. The plant can be grown as a small single-stemmed tree or large multiple stemmed shrub. Tre’s typically grow 15 to 25 feet tall with a spread equal to or greater than the height. There is great variation in this species due to the large number of cultivators in the trade.
Leaves of the species form are oppositely arranged, hand-shaped (Palmatum in Latin), 2 to 5 inches long and have 5 or 7 lobes. Leaves emerge in early spring. Summer color is green and autumn color varies from orange to yellow to red to purple.

It turns out that people aren’t the only ones who can get sunburns. Japanese Maple leaves are delicate, and sometimes will burn if watered at a time too hot during the day. Tiny droplets of water will magnify sunlight on the leaves and cause a dappling type of burn, or the tree gets very thirsty and takes up too much water into the leaves, which causes edge burn! 

The small, reddish flowers are borne in stalked, umbrella-shaped clusters. Flowers bloom between May and June and are insect pollinated. They grow little seeds called “samara” and commonly known as “helicopter seeds.” They’re not like apples or oranges though—they’re closer in nature to acorns.
