It just feels like blackness. It is 1801. Somerset..bumper apple and therefore cider season. I was renting a garret in a farmhouse. The farmer had gone to Petherton for the weekend to buy a plough. He'd taken his wife and left me a larder full of food I had no idea how to cook. The local inn would have to look after me. Faint with hunger, my throat as dry as talc, Bessie took me into her arms and poured cloudy cider and crustless sandwiches into my drooping lips. 

Hours later, I woke in what must have been the storm porch. It was pitch black. So dark I felt I had tumbled into the Abyss. I felt around for my bearings, found a stout stick. Gingerly I stepped forward, dabbing the stick in front of me. In the blackness, my other senses fizzed into life. My breath felt hot around my face. Trees creaked as they nodded and shifted from one foot to the other. Distant rumblings. .indistinct..a choir..a church? The farm seemed an impossible odyssey away. Rustlings, screech owls, carrion crows..encroachers. I imagined voices at my back. Tense and hot, the disorientation heightened by the two gallons of unreleased urine straining at my bladder walls. Would this blackness ever fade?
"Oi, you got yer balaclava back to front, you dopey sod!"
The reassuring voice of Bessie. I unhooded myself and the world was lit in the luminescence of angels once more!
