With a fresh breath of summer Aera revitalizes Keope's in autumn 2019 released track Caldo Live In The Attic. Ralf Schmidt, the northern German's real name, relies on a funky bass line and an overall organic note as the original covered that vibe with the recorded instruments, but adds the rhythmical marimba sound. The latter helps to establish an almost laid-back yet forwardly going Spanish vibe – something Aera has probably absorbed with his multiple stays on the Iberican peninsular and smoothly goes with the chords of the original, which provide as the harmonic counterpart of the aforementioned instruments and sound constructs. Welcome to 2021: Darkroom Dubs crack open their 18th year with a warm welcome to two new members to the roster… Santiago producer Alejandro Paz and Berlin duo Local Suicide with ‘Directions’, complete with remixes from Undo, DJs Pareja and Velax.

Cold, cutting edge and boasting a full-spectrum of sounds, there’s a slight irony to dropping a release called ‘Directions’ when none of us know where the hell we’re going right now. But we sure as hell know what we’re listening to. And boy do we love it.

As proved on previous collaborations between the two acts on labels such as Nein and Aeon, Alejandro’s weighty production dynamics and Local Suicide’s purring noir soul complement each other to the very last transient. Part new romantic, part techno, all dancefloor; each track is a story just as much as it’s a song. ‘Directions’ captures the frustrations and intensity of isolated life in the 21st century and ‘Splish Splash’ takes a provocative, playful stance with its acid house bass plunges and cosmic squiggles.

It’s loaded with a full range of heavyweight remixes from a rollcall of exceptional talent: Undo gets a slinky bass guitar in the mix, DJs Pareja get wonky and bumpy while Velax fuses more grit and intensity in his special Isolated remix. The world may continue to spin backwards but we know where we’re heading… and it’s artists like Alejandro Paz and Local Suicide who are helping us get there. Take care of each other.
