Combining the harmonic subtlety of jazz with the bounce of golden era hip-hop; A Faded Dream explores a sound familiar to fans of Van Dyke’s Hello, Summer LP - a release that received high praise from Pitchfork, Wax Poetics, Flea Market Funk and more. 

Featuring a trumpet solo from the aforementioned Eric “Benny” Bloom; A Faded Dream showcases a mature composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist who’s sound has continued to develop and evolve.

‘The Golden Buddha’ is out Jan 19th, 2018 on Brick Records.

Planet Asia helped jump-start the West Coast independent hip-hop movement, and has solidified himself as one of the most consistent and respected MCs in the game over his 20+ year career.   He dropped his debut EP with producer Fanatik in 1998, and followed up quickly with the singles "Definition of Ill" (Stones Throw) and "Place of Birth" (ABB Records).  In 2001, The Source Magazine gave him the ‘First Round Draft Pick’ and ‘Independent Album of the Year’ awards for ‘How the West Was One’, which was recorded with fellow CA rapper Rasco under the group name Cali Agents.  This landed him a deal with Interscope Records, where he was signed until 2003 without releasing an album.  

Planet Asia was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2002 for his feature on the song "W" by Mystic, and was later signed to Avatar Records, which released his official debut album, ‘The Grand Opening,’ in 2004.  It earned him another ‘Independent Album of the Year’ award from The Source.  Later, he started his own imprint Gold Chain Music, on which he has churned out multiple projects.  He has also collaborated on albums with the likes of DJ Muggs (‘Pain Language’), Evidence (‘The Medicine’) and Madlib (‘Cracks In The Vinyl’), among others, and released songs with artists such as Linkin Park, Bun B, Talib Kweli and Ghostface Killah.

The Fresno MC is fresh off of a strong 2017 which featured well-received collaborative albums with producers DirtyDiggs (‘Dirty Planet’) and Apollo Brown (‘Anchovies’). For 2018, Asia teamed up with Bay Area producer izznyce for this true solo project, sure to be considered the next classic in his vast catalog.

‘The Golden Buddha’ was produced entirely by izznyce (producer for Superstar Quamallah and more) and features AZ, Hus Kingpin, Turbin, Marvelous Mag, Killa Kali, TriState, Xiomara and The Architect.

Speaking on the project, Planet Asia says: “This album represents the foundation of what Planet Asia is about and that is ‘balance’. Me and izznyce also took our time with the record, and had a chance to really vibe out and make the type of music we personally like that will stand the test of time!”

While the new LP is written, performed, and produced entirely by PVD, Lotus features soloists Zac Colwell (tenor saxophone) and Jesse Fischer (Fender Rhodes) over the foundation laid by Pat’s guitar, keys, bass, and percussion work.  The veteran K-Def mastered the record.

"Like They Used to Say" is the second single from Pat Van Dyke's forthcoming album "Hello, Summer".  Warm, jazz vibes that are perfect to soundtrack your summer. 

"Like They Used to Say" - the last track written and recorded for "Hello, Summer" is an original tune influenced by the sounds of "Young-Holt Unlimited" and features Van Dyke on piano, bass, guitar, drums, percussion, and synths. Jesse Fischer lends his talents to the song providing a beautiful Fender Rhodes solo while Zac Colwell plays flute. The horn parts were written by Pat and played by Dave Levy (Trumpet), Joey Johnson (Sax) and Peter Lin (Trombone). 

The album is out on vinyl + digital formats this Friday 6/22!

Any 45 by musician and composer Pat Van Dyke is a must own—the tastiest of treats for your turntable. This fresh platter of wax builds upon the success of Van Dyke's 2018 full length effort “Hello, Summer” which received overwhelming support and praise from Pitchfork, Wax Poetics, Fleamarket Funk and more. Pitchfork nicely summed up that LP: The New Jersey jazzman combines hip-hop sensibilities with the precision of Count Basie in a collection of highly controlled compositions that are nonetheless warm, languid, and dedicated to the funk.

Pat’s dedication continues to be on display on everything he touches—this time on two brand new cuts; “New Memories” b/w “Alright By Me”. Both tracks burst with melody, the right amount of breeziness and cleverness. Recorded at home on the vintage Tascam 388 Eight Track tape machine, Pat performed the rhythm section tracks on his own before adding featured soloists Zac Colwell (Saxophone on "New Memories") and Matt Chertkoff (Guitar on "Alright By Me").

Van Dyke’s work is unbeatable and he’s managed to keep his releases in a cadence that keeps audiences hungry and quality control top of mind.
