One day I (Jodi) was sitting in the salon getting my hair highlighted.  Through the window, I saw this plastic bag tumbling across the hot asphalt parking lot.  At that moment, I had this striking realization that this plastic bag might “outlive” me and everyone I knew.  That thought, sobering as it was, also led to this curiosity of all the things that a plastic bag would see and do in its indestructible little plastic bag life. It might see the world; it might also harm it. Sitting there with foils in my hair, I opened the notes app on my phone. The lyrics were spilling out faster than I could type.  I didn’t even let my hairdresser finish blow drying my hair – I was so anxious to get back to my car so I could sing the melody into a voice memo. That night, after work, I grabbed my guitar and finished the song.

03 - Plastic Bag Odyssey (I'll Never Die)

My (Jordan) dad was not a great parent when I was younger. He was stressed. He worked late. Kids annoyed him. But he was a great dad when my sisters and I reached young adulthood. He had always provided for us materially, but in this second iteration he provided for us emotionally; he was supportive, patient, and available. He died in 2020, but when the family gets together, we tell stories about that second version of him. We haven’t forgotten his earlier, unpleasant side. It’s just that the good memories outweigh the bad. I’m a lot like him. I know how frustrated and moody I can get. I just hope that when time runs out that I gave more to this life than I took from it.

We had nearly finished recording all the songs for the album when this song was written.  It ended up being exactly what we thought we needed to round out the album, so we ended up pulling the other love song we had and adding this one to the album at the very last minute.

This song almost didn’t even make the “first cut” of songs for the album, but I (Jodi) really wanted to have a feel-good, young-love song.  Enter Doug, who gave it a New Orleans-style groove and made it one of the most fun songs on the whole album.  We got married in New Orleans and had a second line to our reception, so the song is nostalgic in more ways than one.

A little fun fact: the sousaphone player, Urshawn Matthews, had to record his part outside the studio in the driveway because he was too tall to play inside without his sousaphone hitting the ceiling.
