July 2nd this year marked my Dad’s 65th birthday. In honor of him, my Mom asked me to compose a special piece of music that serves as a testament to his character, to who he his as a father, husband, grandfather, brother, and friend.⁣

During those quarantine months of April and May here in NC, I dove into writing what now has become 𝐅𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐜𝐲. With over 100 different instruments, 𝐅𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐜𝐲 speaks to the youthfulness, growth, integrity, and wisdom of my father over the years. I’m thankful for the chance to share this gift with him while he’s still full of life. I’m grateful that music in and of itself can move beyond words to express something I’ve always wanted to say, but that I could never fully put into words. ⁣

I hope 𝐅𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐜𝐲 blesses you in some way. I hope that it encourages you, and I hope you share it with someone you love and wish to honor. Cherish the ones you love and let them know while they’re still with you in this life. Let this be an anthem of honor and gratitude.

Father's Legacy

Life As We Know It really is 2020 all smooshed into one three-section musical moment. I began messing around with a cello melody during quarantine...then, life hit hard (on top of Covid) with all sorts of added chaos with one difficulty after the other. Flooding at home. Losing work. Isolation from friends and family. Losing my full-time job. Lots of losing...I know you resonate with that!

That’s when the last two sections of this piece came into being. The heavy, brooding-into-intensity ending resembles the nature of how this year has gone for all of us. Why an epic 80’s guitar and French horn solo? (Didn’t catch that part? Listen again!) Because the current and classical understandings of life are consistently blurred and jumbled up. Our lives are blurred and disarrayed. With so much miseducation, misinformation, and lack of critical thinking, we have (as a culture/society) ended up being dissonant shadows of ourselves...

We may wear physical face coverings for our health, out of respect for one another. But... if we’re brutally honest with ourselves, we’ve been wearing masks for a very long time...wearing masks of misidentification and idolatry, hiding behind our careers, vocations, giftings, talents, securities, failures, successes, etc.

If there’s at least one thing that this pandemic has quickly made paramountly obvious, it’s that my entire life is perceived control. Nothing is guaranteed except the exclusivity of truth. Think about it. Nothing is secure except that single reality which substantiates itself fully and ultimately on its own: the truth. It stands on its own two feet. Not my truth. THE truth. Not my opinion. THE truth. THE truth is, you and I can’t be shadows of ourselves for long. We can try, but it won’t last. We are meant for so much more. We desire for THE truth to reign.

While Life As We Know It echos a temporal reality, it won’t always be this way. It’ll get tougher, sure. Not without hope, though. THE truth exists to weigh heavy on our perceived securities. THE truth is only the Creator of all things can make it right. Only He can save. Only He can remedy. Only Jesus. Not my opinion. THE truth.
