A NEW Count Blastula original makes its debut appearance on “Blast Off”! Leaning on the funky side with a twist of almost 90’s grunge era this song builds from start to finish. Even the amount of vocal harmonies increase as the song progresses, as well as additional synths and rhythm guitar parts and a cool conga part from Donley for outro solo section. By the end everything comes together for an epic almost “super hero” like synth solo from Mike. Unique and interesting layered approach to the synth solo give the ending a massive sound. I personally think of the song as being cold and icy, cavern like, if it were a color it would be a dark blue, the effects treatment I chose mimmic these qualities (at least to me). Moog murph on an electric guitar rhythm track create reflective sounds that blend into the acoustic track. Vocals have a similar almost reflection like quality to them. The unison riff reminds me of something the Brecker bro’s would play, Dave sets the tone with a perfectly fusiony drum part. BLAST OFF release #3 - “In My Head”

I wrote this song an eternity ago, we recorded it at multiple studios Jimmy D was def on drums and Ponie on bass for earlier versions I think Brett Walts and or Chris Cox recorded it first.. Fast forward—— “In My Head” makes its first album appearance on Turnip Stampedes album. A notable change for the Turnip album was adding a percussion breakdown which we never did live. There is a cool Turnip version of “In My Head” filmed at Old City Hall lurking on U-Tubez somewhere ..  As I mentioned before a big part of doing this album is to have a collection of the original material that seems to be connecting with the audience and going over well. This song checks that box and somehow always has. I have a ton of amazing memories playing this tune with various lineups. Currently Blastula will do an extended percussion breakdown live when we play it out and sometimes march around the audience, play tambourine in the restrooms, cow bell solo’s ect….Im happy with how this recording of “In My Head” turned out on BLAST OFF.  Daves drums shift a bit away from the original more grassy renditions and into almost  second line meets Brazilian ish vibe? (Maybe? Ish?) Donley adds congas and a funky go-go bell pattern to the percussion breakdown. I remember opening the sax tracks from Mark Johnson, that was like a Xmas style experience. Pretty brilliant horn parts that perfectly fit the tune, I particularly love his parts during Mikes piano solo. Jerry holds down the bass and adds some need vocal parmesan. Some cool production tidbits: super fast auto pan guitar lead at the end added for Mr. Sparkle effect… and the massive final chorus section that has like 15 or so vocals layered in it..both sound very cool with headphones on. What is the meaning of the song?  Nothing?   Everything? “August Heat” made its first appearance at a Dino Bone-Yarn wig I did with Danny Boy and Shmosay It was mid August and in the mid 90’s temp wise.. I was playing bass on the gig and wrote the song the night before with the intention of having something easy but groovy to sing and play for the gig. Fast forward a year or so it makes an album appearance on Count Blastula’s “JIVE HONEY” with Josh Dekany on drums and Mike Dubaniewicz on sax. This updated version off of “BLAST OFF” swaps out the sax solo with a guitar solo kind of in the urban blues realm. Lush 3 part harmonies at the end of the chorus add a nice depth to the song. The short organ solo is accompanied by a “Purdie shuffle” type drum groove and alternate bass and guitar patterns adding some additional interest to the tune. This song has an appearance by my cat.. (shhh its a secret) if you can find the precise spot you win 1 free count blastula sticker but you gotta send the time mark. August Heat

Another new Count Blastula tune featuring Pete Cappelli’s lyrics and rap. “On my mind” starts off sounding kind of like a gangster acid drench Sweet home alley bama although the F major in the verse progression sort of tweaks the tonality, major-minor vibe. The verse hits and Petes fuzzy saturated dropped D electric guitar riff kicks in with his rap. Pete intentionally leaves the bass in the verse portions of the song distant and quiet. Then when the chorus hits “Im gonna tell you whats..” Its like a horse kick to the teeth. Sorry no guitar or key solo it doesn’t follow or stick to Count Blastula’s typical vibe there is no formula just heavy funk. Glorious fat kick and snare meet funky Strat with wah, unison bass vocal guitar riff on chorus, odd reggae ish bridge all swirl together to make this tune groove along. Artwork by Pete Cappelli

Originally off of Count Blastula’s album Exoticandy. I wrote this song along side of several others starting first with the sounds I wanted to use and overall vibe. Sounds were acoustic guitar, moog murph, synth, chorus, toms, vibe was grunge era, tribal-ish . This updated version omitted the arpeggiated synth on the chorus and also the goofy synth melody I made Mike play. Thoughtful piano with some serious Mr Sparkle effect from the tremolo guitar, particularly on the bridge help give the song a more cohesive sound. Interesting bass approach from Gerry on the bridge as well as cool tribal like tom groove. Vocal layering loop thing sort of reminded me of Beck’s tune “Loser” I used a boss loop pedal intentionally because it sort of sounded like shit, I liked the low quality almost grainy sound in juxtaposition with a lot of the other pristine sounds. The vocals have a a similar call and response to the original version of the song with telephone effect response. Lush fat vocal harmonies, colorful effect treatment overall, cool almost exhale like outro that we added at SubCat Studios all stir together for something that is sweet and indulgent. I find parts of the song to feel like a brain massage when listening with headphones. “Pull whats to come ahead you’ll be pulling from behind”  lyrics are in my usual vein of being nonsensical and open to your own personal interpretation.

Ethereal shimmering and sparkling sounds melt into hypnotic swingin’ reggae roots groove. Spooky and creepy crawling, slinky feel add to the Blastula vibe. It's certainly not happy, but it's also not apocalyptic?? Harmonies build in layers as the song progresses into solo sections. The guitar solo starts with the nice proverbial dip of the toe into the cold bath water and percolates nicely into a boiling bebop meets rock type of brew. Followed by “pool noodles” meets groan hammer synth painting a lovely and demented melting sunset.  Lyrics = nonsense
