Pomcast Episode 010: Reece Johnson

Another month down.. another trip around the world! This time around we venture over to my good friends, Wilko and Olivier, better known as Dub Striker. With plenty of musicality and lush deep tones, Dub Striker is respected in the scene for not only their own productions, but their ability to curate. Their label, "Don't Need a Million" provides a consistent stream of quality Deep House with that classic French touch.

As with every guest, I love to invite the ones who bring more to the table outside of their musical preference. From my time managing The Underground Sessions, Dub Striker held down a monthly slot on Sunday afternoons. Through the chat room, we had the pleasure of getting to appreciate and respect one another through our love of music.

During his teenage years, El Kazed stumbled upon the world of house music, delving into the collections of record shops in Sarrebrucken and grooving on the Belgian dancefloors. 

Then, He forged connections in Strasbourg with future label co-owners, Rony, Big Freak, and TheLau. After hosting numerous parties, they made the collective decision to launch Ordinaire Records, a label dedicated to their shared passion for deep house, aimed at promoting emerging producers. 

After releasing a few tunes on Ordinaire Records, El Kazed caught the attention of Chez Damier and released in 2023 "For A&S" on his newly established label, "House Of Chez." Keep an eye out for El Kazed's upcoming music releases; there's so much more to come!

It's 2016 , 20 years since I discovered the sounds of Dj Sneak in a Small dark room in Leeds.

After this night in 1996 at Back To Basics in Leeds i had to find out more about this unknown Dj.

This mix of the night  became available later, as did other Dj mixes much to the disgust of Sneak and a few years of fall outs began.

The mix was recorded and sold without Sneaks blessing. A few choice words where said at the time, luckily this is all in the past. Sneak happily now gives his mixes out on his own Soundcloud.
 

This was the mix that really started my love affair with Dj Sneaks mixing style and music. 

I originally had a copy of this mix and for years it got played heavily in my cars, eventually loosing the tape.

After a number of years searching again, another original copy came into my hands.

So I decided to record and upload the mix on my Soundcloud so you get the proper feel for the sound quality, not a poor Youtube rip.

Hope you enjoy this mix.

Dj Sneak - Back to Basics 1996 - Pleasure Rooms Mix

Country Gents is the moniker of Lee Jones, DJ and producer.
A DJ since 1996, Lee was initially inspired by DiY Soundsystem and ethos in 1990 and ended up DJ’ing all over the UK, Europe and America before starting his own events in Reading and Oxford UK under the name Valley Moods Productions.

He started producing in 1999 and released his debut 12” that same year on Cross Section Records’ sub label Black No Sugar. He has releases on Transfusion, Soiree International, Pear Music, Manuscript Ukraine, 124 Recordings and countless releases on Deep Cartel Recordings. In the early 2000’s he worked tirelessly with Dan Cartel putting on illegal parties all over Devon and South Wales and a multitude of other areas, with festival gigs including Glastonbury, The Glade and Secret Garden Party.
  
Over the years, a number of other producers have worked with Lee as fellow Gents, but currently he is working solo from his Bristol Bus Studio in the wilds of South Oxfordshire. On the performance front Joe Hockham is now a regular fixture and between them the House sound is developing yet again into new territory. Both Lee and Joe’s backgrounds are firmly in the Free Party/Rave/Festival scene that dates back to 1989. as mentioned earlier, in 1990, Nottingham sound system DiY erupted into the new culture of spontaneous guerrilla raves that began for that group of travellers and townsfolk alike, which was where it all really began for both of them.

These are exciting times - he launched a new label called Buslife at the end of 2015. Has gigs regularly with Camouflaged Disco in Sheffield and Duvet Vous? in Bristol to name just two.
In April 2020 the Country Gents Radio Show moved on from 3.5 fantastic years at Release FM and is now a resident on The Underground Sessions Radio, Saturday night from 6pm to 8pm GMT
The picture you see in the logo of the label also happens to be his home, hence the name!
